FIM TrialGP Championship Gets
Underway In Spain
T
he 2022 FIM TrialGP Cham-
pionship got underway in
Spain, June 11-12, and it was Ver-
tigo Factory Team's Jaime Busto
who fired the first shot.
In the two-day competition,
Busto out-dueled defending
champ Toni Bou in the heat,
dropping 29 points to Bou's 35.
This was the first time since 2016
that Bou didn't win the opening
round of the championship. For
Busto, it was his second career
victory and the first-ever TrialGP
victory for the Spanish manufac-
turer Vertigo.
"Today has been incredible,"
said Busto, "and I'm so happy
to start the season like this. The
bike and the team have been in-
credible and I'm looking forward
to tomorrow."
"It's always better to start the
TrialGP Championship winning,
but, as far as the trial went,
second position is not bad," rea-
soned Bou. "I started the event
pretty badly, but then I was able
to recover. It was a tough trial,
with a lot of heat and some very
demanding sections. It was easy
to make mistakes, in fact, I made
a lot of errors and, physically, I
wasn't at 100 percent, either. So,
after such a difficult day, I think
that a second place today is a
good result for the beginning of
the championship."
Repsol Honda's new team
manager Takahisa Fujinami said,
"In such a high-level champion-
ship, there is no room for errors.
Toni made a mistake in the first
section, which weighed on him
and meant that he had to ride
against the tide for the whole
race. From then on, he had to
take risks to try to recover points
in the sections in which he could
have taken advantage."
It didn't take Bou long to get
back to his winning ways, but it
was a hard-fought win. Bou and
Busto battled all day again, but
this time Bou came out on top,
just one point ahead of Busto.
"I'm very happy because today
I felt much better than yesterday,"
Bou said. "I felt more comfort-
able, but Jaime rode an incred-
ible trial again today. We were
both very good, we made very
few mistakes."
GasGas rider Miquel Gelabert
and TRS rider Adam Raga traded
a piece of the podium over the
weekend.
