countries, the teams are making more money, and the riders are making more money all the way down. I think for sure the change is for the better. There can still be more improvements, but it'll continue to get better. The TV situation in America needs to be better. The new riders' group came under criticism for the way the Brazilian GP was handled, with your representative Didier de Radigues approving the track and then the riders complaining when they showed up. Will the group continue to function? I think our riders' group is a good thing. Our problem is that no riders want to look at (inspect) race tracks. We shouldn't have been in Brazil, but our representative okayed it so we had to race there. A couple of the riders didn't want to race, but one of them is retired and he didn't really care about the sport. I didn't ride 100% in the race, but everything was fine. We need to make some changes, but no organization is perfect the first time out. It'll get better. Having safer race tracks is the bottom line. We just have to find a better system. Franco Uncini is really interested in handling the track inspections. Hey, I was in a tough position this year. I was the 500 rep, I was battling back from a lot of injuries and I was in a battle for the championship. Brazil was really tough for me, but anyone in my position would have rode. We couldn't pack up and go home. We'd end up looking like kids and no promoters would want to work with us again. The television was in place, everything was ready and we were already there. We had to race. As the 500 rep, I had to voice my opinion and it was tough. It worked out" fine, but it got a little touchy. Eddie Lawson said we should go home, so I told him to go ahead and go home, but he's not racing any more. I'm sure Doohan would have liked to have seen us not ride because then he would have been World Champion, but turn the table and he'd be banging on the door too. As it turned out, nobody got hurt and we had less crashes there than anywhere. Will your wife, Shae, and new son, Rex, be accompanying you to Europe when the season heads that way for the fourth race? I don't know right now. We're planning on letting it happen as it goes. Shae and the baby will probably go. We have a house in Spain that is centrally located. If it's not easy, maybe somebody can come over and help. It's all new to me right now. Every day with the baby is a new experience, so I really don't know about next year yet. Tell us a little about the new house you're having built in Monterey, California. The new house is on two and" a half acres, and I can see turn 11 at Laguna Seca from the property. The house itself is 4200 square feet. It's got a three-car garage and another workshop that's about the same size, and it's got a workout room. It basically has everything that we needed and we're really excited £N to move in. 9
