11i1T11 the whole race," said Morris. "The straw (in the waterbottle) was split so nothing would come ouL It really drained my energy and my throat was getting pretty sore." As the racers completed their first lap, the time-adjusted positions were almost too close to call. Zitterkopf reached pit row first and headed out for his second circuit shortly before Morris, who made his appearance two minutes back on adjusted. time. Johnny Campbell arrived half a minute behind Morris in third, and Ashcraft turned the tables by arriving in fourth, 10 seconds ahead of Zitterkopf on adjusted time. Harden dashed through the pits in 10th and tied Morris on adjusted time, and Paul Pitts, who was pouring on the pace in the 250cc Expert class, was just 20 seconds slower than Harden when his row 22 starting position was taken into account. Bill Maxim headed the trio of Over38 Pro contenders seven minutes off the lea!iers' pace, and a tenacious ride had Fullmer still ahead of 125cc Pro rival Kline. The second time around, the trail was b~tter in one respect and worse in another. It was better because the first lap had worn-in a groove that made the course easier to follow; it was worse because the same worn-in groove made the course harder to negotiate. The chewed-up course also started chewing through the fuel "The course is demanding - a lot of sand washes, and it took a lot of fuel and a lot of energy," said Donatoni. Motocrosser Steve Hengeveld, who was trying desert ,acing for the first time, ran out of gas, which compoul1ded the problems a broken back brake lever were already causing for . the Kawasaki KXl25 racer. The racing was just as close at the final pit, in the middle of the figure eight. Zitterkopf dashed in from his second circuit of the 17-mile starting loop with a front flat and paced up and down for more than half a minute while his pit crew struggled to change the unfamiliar KTM wheel. Morris raced into the pits in second and shot past the disabled Zitterkopf, but he was still 40 seconds behind the KTM on adjusted time when Zitterkopf swung back into the saddle. And just as Zitterkopf was preparing to leave, it was Ashcraft's turn to sweep pasL The Honda pilot took second in the physical standings and when the pit crews checked their stopwatches, they found the Honda CR500 was more than three minutes ahead of Zitterkopf on adjusted time. The only person who didn't know he had the lead was Ashcraft. "I had a feeling I was doing good, just because you know when you're riding good. You're not making any mistakes - you're just clicking," said Ashcraft. "My pit crew told me I was leading the Vets, but I had no idea I was in the hunt for the overall." Ashcraft's father, Bob, did not mention his overall lead to save the extra pressure. "He was doing fine and we thought we should just let him keep going without trying to push that little bit harder," said the pit chief. Fourth overall, just a few seconds behind Morris on adjusted time, was Johnny Campbell, and ISDE rider Jim Gray was holding his own in fifth. "This is pretty much new to me especially the cactus," said the Colo. rado racer, who was campaigning a Yamaha in the 250cc Pro class. "I wrecked in the first loop.
