Tellier SONOYTA, MEXICO, DEC. 5 Destry Abbou rode his new 550cc KTM 10 a decisive overall victory in the 16th running of the American Desert Racing Association's Sonoyta to Rocky Point desert race. The 125-mile run 10 the beach wandered its way down to the Sea of Cortez fishing town of Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point. The 19-year-old Expert was competing in his first race on a true open-class bike. Abbott had been riding a 300cc KTM with excellent results, he had the 1992 ADRA Championship sewn up tight, but his swtich to the half-literplus motorcycle didn't hurt his style over th predominantly-sandy course. Abbou topped fellow Open Expert Ken Kozlick by almost five minutes, and Todd Davis by over six minutes. Abbou averaged 54 miles per hour. An interesting scenario unfolded when Cuffy Crabbe won the 40 Veteran class and son Cullen took second in the 200cc Novice division. These two strong finishes guaranteed them each a class championship. The Senior Amateurs were out in force with all the usual top riders on hand. Neill Goodell, Steve Weinstein, Rocky Robling and Steve Gonzalez were all ready 10 do battle, but Albro surprised everyone by topping the class. Albro overcame some last-minute mechanical di££iculties and beat Goodell by two seconds. "I was well ahead of him with about 10 miles to go, when my swingarm rubbing block came loose and jammed in the countershaft sprocket," said Albro. "When I slid to a stop and was geuing it out, Neill blew by me. I had 10 really pin the throule to catch him, but I didl" Lisa Wagher once again proved her stamina by winning the Women's class, and then celebrating by dancing at the local cantina. Wagher is paniculary good at the long races and averaged 38 mph. Larry Beshaw was singled out for special recognition at the awards presentation, having won his first trophy after years of racing. He finished third in the 30 Novice class. Mau Murphy, who won the 200cc Novice class and was 13th overall after dominating the Mini Amateurs all year, appears 10 be a future star. f:N REGIONAL .t ~~HANlP.ONSH'P $566,880.00 HONDA KAWASAKI 129,680 126,400 SUZUKI 135,600 SPONSORED BY ~ Pizza Plus AJIIit IANCTlONao ~DVN£DP 8oY..esen INFO 615-323-5497 P o _ Reed.
