By the time they went by the green flag, Nicholson had moved into second. Braun went by Villacaro over the . doubles, as did Nicolini. The front three riders set a blistering pace away from the rest of the field, as Garlin and Villacaro were fighting it out for fifth. Garlin went down once, but kept his motor running' and didn't lose much ground. The leaders were in single file the rest of the moto with Ellis ahead of Nicholson and Braun at the checkered flag. • When the gate dropped for the second molO, Ellis again nailed the start with Villacaro, Garlin, Braun, Nicolini, Nicholson and trackowner Lou Whitney following. Ellis then shot past for the lead again. Ellis pulled away briefly as Villacaro dropped back, with Nicholson moving into fourth. Garlin was pressuring Braun for second when Braun's chain came off. Garlin then closed the gap on Ellis, who was having 'tranny problems. Ellis crossed the finish with Garlin and Nicholson right on his fender in second and third. Kim Burrow's Maico grabbed the holeshot in the Sportsman class, followed by John Logsden, Al Gardner, John Lukasak and Lisa Powell.
