'Miller had to overcome transmission difficulties, and a horrendous start, giving up about 40 yards to the rest of the field. "My mechanic put on a new Ron Woods shifter before the race," said Miller. "It was rubbing on the foot peg mounts, making it diffiClilt to shift, and often causing it to pop out of gear." Salevan continued to Iqd Mansfield around the course. By lap three Miller had worked his way to third place, and by lap four was pressuring Salevan for the lead. Miller passed Salevan at the end of the long sweeper heading into the chicane. Salevan took the lead back when Miller's bike came out of gear. With Murdaugh holding a distant third, Salevan led Miller down the back straight toward the checkers. As the two riders exited the last turn heading into the sweeper, Miller went wide in the cushion. Salevan' squared the turn off a little too sharply and laid the bike down, allowing Miller to coast home and grab the pole for the final. After Miller topped the 600cc A class, he loaned his bike to Salevan for the 600cc B race. After winning the heat, Dave Murdaugh looked ready to capture the main event, but it was Longneck Car Car/Manlove Automative Honda-sponsored Rick Mansfield grabbing the lead. Salevan challenged early on, but stalled his bike while trying to stuff under Mansfield for the lead. At the end of eight laps, Mansfield took the win over Murdaugh, who nursed his ailing Honda home. After making the necessary adjustments to bis shifter, Miller made short work of the ProAm final. In the Vet final, Miller was challenged by Salevan. After building a comfortable lead, Miller began riding a much higher line, unaware that Salevan was making up ground by riding on the inside. With two laps to go, Salevan momentarily took the lead As the white flag came out, Miller used the outside to take the lead, which he held to the checkers. In the motocross portion of the program, Roy Vanderveur piloted his Yamahas to wins in the 250cc Band 25· Plus'B classes, while cousins Glen and Bruce Lowman captured the 250cc A and 25 Plus A divisions, respectively.
