~ LOCAL EVENTS ~ Ken Miller (168), Ron Carlson (8) and John Nelson (45) battled at Perris Raceway. Shane Lawson (686) pulled the holeshot on Shannon Rhoades (70) and the rest of the 250cc A class during the Tri·State Challenge at Starvation Point Park. was being hounded by Shawn Morga' and Mark Neiderhiser. These five riders staged an incredible battle throughout the entire moto. Crowe tried to pull away but could never get more than two or three bike lengths ahead of Postlewaite. Crowe managed to stay ahead for the win. In· moto two Morga was able to take the win, followed across the finish line by Morgan. Neiderhiser made up for his bad luck in the 250cc class by winning both 125cc A motos. The bad news was that he was not representing Pennsylvania in this division. Instead, Shane Lawson was elected. Lawson finished third in the first moto behind Neiderhiser and Morga, only to have a piston explode while warming up his bike for the second moto. His problems would continue on Saturday as he dropped out of the 250cc A class with a boltom-end failure. Jimmy Evans dominated the Schoolboy division for Pennsylvania, while Ron Johnson racked up the overall win in the l25cc C class for the same team. The biggest rain-related problem for any of the teams involved Ohio's Joe Dutton, who was turning in one great ride after another all weekend long until the second 250cc C moto, which he failed LO finish. His I-DNF score still gave him a ninth-place finish, but ruined the team's championship hopes. In the 250cc B class Brad Martin raced to a win in the first moto when conditions were good, then dominated the second moto in terrible conditions to, earn the overalL. c.J. Kline finished in second, trailed by Stan Tale&,o in third. Talego and Kline would swap posiuons in moto two to give Talego second overall. The 125cc Expert class on Sunday saw a great battle between Shane Lawson and Mark Neiderhiser, both from Pennsylvania. Neiderhiser led Lawson through every corner of the race, as Lawson tried passes everywhere but kept coming up short. Two turns away from the checkered 'flag Lawson tried to move inside, but bobbled for a split second, apparently ending his hopes of escaping with a moto win. To everyone's surprise, Neiderhiser, using team tactics, slowed as he made his way up LO the finish line, allowing Lawson to cruise by for the moLO win. That point' for Lawson was the one point needed for Pennsylvania to win the weekend-long battle. Results In the next lap, Willie Burr joined the fray for third place. Burr managed to emerge from the group with a hold on third, and held off Terranova and Kunitsugu long enough to cross the line behind Ienatsch and Sorenson. "I was really pushing it in that race," said Ienatsch. "I was going just as fast as I possibly could." Results 22 550 S/BK: I. Nick Ienatsch (Yam); 2. Frank Arag~ki (Yam); 3. Pennsylvania pounds Tri-State Motocross Challenge By Bud Little ELIZABETH, WV, ocr. 31·NOV. I The Pennsylvania team came from behind to win the Tri-State Challenge, presented by RC Cola and DBL Sports at Starvation Point Park. The two-day event featured riders representing their home states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Ten-man teams were established at the riders meeting, with overall finishes from both days combining to determine the winner. . The 250cc C class saw a classic confrontation between Joe Dutton of Ohio, Joe Vokar of Pennsylvania and Michael Hill of the West Virginia team. Dutton was unstoppable on Saturday, winning both motos. Hill finished second while Shawn Busch, a regular on the Grand National Cross Country tour, surprised many full-time motocrossers by bringing his Kawasaki home in third overall. Volkar had a third and fourth for fourth overall. Steve Crowe wowed everyone by winning the first 250cc Expert moto while still wearing a cast from a wrist injury sustained earlier in the year. He had to work hard to hold off Mike Postlewaite and Mike Morgan. Morgan SATIJRDAY 50: 1. Christopher Frye; 2. ('.ody Longwell; 3. Tanner White. 65: I. Michael Massey; 2. Ashley Smi'h; 3. Decker dazzling at Perris MX By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, NOV. 21 Craig Decker pOsted a four-moto sweep of the 125 and 250cc Pro classes durin~ GFI Super Saturday Motocross, held at Perns Raceway. The first 250cc Pro moto saw Decker simply , holeshot and never look back. Decker pulled out a seemingly insurmountable lead, well out of sight of the nearest competitors. Donald Upton rode strong for second and held back a late-race c;harge from Shaun Kalos. Craig Canoy and Billy Joe Mercier battled throughout the moto for fourth, with Canoy getting the nod. Canoy had the best reflexes and timed the gate just right for the holeshot in the second moto. Decker dove underneath Canoy and was in the lead by the start of the second lap. Kalos was on the·move and quickly disposed of Canoy, then set after Decker. Decker's lead shrank lap by lap until Kalos was within striking distance. Just when it appeared that Kalos would have a shot at taking the lead, he tangled with lapped riders and ,lost several seconds. Kalos mounted an impressive charge late in the moLO and closed' up on Decker, but it was too little too late. Decker grabbed the moLO and overall wins. Decker returned later in the program to score the 125cc Pro victory as well. Decker 'easily out-distanced Derek Natvig and Dana Wiggins in moto one. Decker had to work much harrder the second moto after chasing Wiggins for over eight laps. Decker finally found an opening, made the pass and pulled away for the victory. Wiggins held on for second in front of Cory Keeney and Andy Pugh. Josh Wray posted a double moto sweep of the 250cc Novice class in his debut race on his new Yamaha YZ50. Paul Kellen rode impressively in both moLOS and successfully charged from mid pack starts to finish as the runner-up. C.T. Falk rode his normal consistent pace for third in front o[ Pete Marino and Ganh Milan. Chris Corum used strong stans to capture his first-ever Vet Intermediate class win. Corum ran up front during the first moto and finished second to Steve Piattoni. In the second moto, Corum led it from start to finish. Corum even had time for a small get-of( en route to the overall win in front of Pialloni> Hanson and Joel Seals. Results 50 FIRST TIMER R·I G·I: I. Charlie Jenkins (Yam); 2. Mitch Lawkr (Yam); 3. Pinksta'ff pounds Seattle RR By Jacqui Madelin SEAITLE, WA, NOV. 1 Keith Pinkstaff won the 750cc Superbike class in lhe last race of the season a t Seattle International Raceway. After heavy rain the previous week, the track remained wet throughout; deviating a foot or two from the dry race line would bring the bike into standing water. Conditions worsened late in the afternoon, with heavy rain weeding out the inexperienced. As ex,pected, Pinkstaff on the Zlock Racing Kawasaki ZX750 took first place right from the start, with Chris Callan and Eric Disch in hot pursuit. Pinkstaff stretched a fivesecond lead on Callan, oblivious to the battle over fifth place between Todd Cason and Damon Mon Wai. Disch took advantage of the heavier traffic to pass Callan. Disch and Callan began to reel Pinkstaff in. Coming into turn nine, Callan tried sweeping around the outside of Disch. He got past, only for Disch to slide back underneath in a chicane full of • ") JJ -, 2 r
