~ LOCAL EVENTS ~ Results Doug Hallmark (48), Danny Lowers (9) and Steve Marquez (41) led the Vet Novice class to turn one at Perris Raceway's Police and Firemen MX Nationals. Ron Watmore won all 12 motos he entered and was crowned Grand National Champion. Police and Firemen Nationals Watmore on fire at Perris By Tony Alessi ,'I 20 PERRIS, CA, NOV. 20 t couldn't have gone any better than this, no falls and no breakdowns, this is as good as it gets," was what Tucson Fireman Ron Watmore said after winning all 12 motos en route to victories in the 125cc Expert, Sportsman Expert and Vet Exper~ classes during the two-day Police and Firemen Nationals, held at Perris Raceway. The event hel ped raise money for D.A.R.E., the drug abuse resistance education program, and drew over 400 riders. Watmore's only serious challenge during the two-day event came in the l25cc Expert class in the form of Pat Dale from the Kent Fire Department in Washington. Watmore battled closely with Dale all through the opening day's 125cc Expert class motos, but Watmore proved to have a sharper edge and passed Dale in both races. "I could see I was getting close to Pat in the same turn every lap, I finally held it on and cut under him," said Watmore. Watmore went on for the win, while Dale settled for second. Watmore faced one other close challenger during the two-day event in the Vet Expert class. Toe rider was California Highway Patrol officer Mark Duval. Watmore won both motos, but Duval pushed hard in both races and made Watmore work for the gold medal. Dale finished third, in front of U.S. Border Patrol agent Mark Davenport. Duval returned on day two to score the Vintage class gold and Four-Stroke class gold in what could only be described as runaway wins. Duval topped Vic Curti and Charlie Beck in the Vintage class and Doug Cave and Beck in the Four-Stroke division. L.A. County Sheriff Eddie Hatch scored the overall National Championship in the Vet Novice and Sportsman Novice classes. Hatch was untouchable in Friday's Vet Novice race. Grant Moore and Hatch battled early in the first moto, but Hatch found his rhythm . and pulled away for the win. Moore crossed the line second, followed by Danny Lowers and Don Remp. The second moto saw Corona Fireman Don Remp holeshot, only to give up the lead to a very aggressive Hatch. Once into the lead, Hatch's mission was simple: stay smooth and keep clear of the competi tion. Hatch did just that, and scored the gold. Early-race leader Remp faded late in the moto, advancing Grant Moore to second and Danny Lowers to third. Remp held on for fourth while Tommy Whitman, Greg Green and Jack Allen rounded the top seven. tN THURSDAY SPTSMN BEG 125: 1. Andrew Woods (Hon); 2. Lyle Raymond (Hon); 3. Charles Meyer (Han); 4. At Daniel Boone- MX Park, Jeff May maneuvered his Suzuki into the holeshot position in both motos of the I25cc A class and posted I-I scores for the overall victory. May's lap times averaged one minute and 43 seconds, among the fastest times ever recorded at the track. Battling behind May for second place were Joshua Steel and Larry Gessner. The IO-lap first moto was a long race, and Steel went down in the ninth lap and had to ride hard to regain second place by the end of the race. Gessner also went down on lap nine, but was able to maintain third place. The second moto was shortened to six laps due lO cold weather, but May still kept up his fast lap times. Steel, the only rider to successfully triple the supercross whoops on a 125cc, came in a close second. The 250cc A class was dominated by Steel, who took the holeshot in both motos. The race was fast and exciting as Steel barely kept ahead of May for the wins. These riders provided the best pro racing of the season. The 60cc class boasted the best race of the day', as Chris H«;ath and J.R. Carter battled it out. The. first moto was won by Heath, giving him and Carter an equal number of points going into the last molO of the series. Heath took the holeshot in the second molO. Carter stayed close lO Heath all the way, sometimes riding side by side. In the last lap, Carter moved closer and passed Heath in the last curve. As they came up the hill to the finish line, Heath pulled up beside Carter and barely nosed ahead as they got to the checkered flag. Heath took home the championship by only one point. Bruce bruises Sandhill MX By Nuklear Neukam BRElIiTWOOD, CA, NOV. 15 Joe Bruce turned in an impressive perfor. mance to win the 250cc Pro class at Sandhill Ranch MX, where racers got the chance to compete on a new track arransement. FMF/Yoko/DubLin Suzuki-backed Bruce wasted little time in taking control of the first mow, and stayed ahead of hard-charging Jimmy Clay for the win. Bruce was again on the pipe to start the second moto, but after only a couple of laps he got tossed off in some rough stuff. It wasn't long before Dustin Bloomfield took over the lead and maintained control for the moto win. Bruce, however, was able to advance back up 1.0 second place, giving him the overall win. Bloomfield's 3-1 tally secured second overall. Clay combined a fourth-place finish with his first·moto runner-up io claim third overall. Danny Nelson had his work cut out for him in the first moto as Shawn Carmichael and Darrell Chapman pitched their Kawasakis around turn one in first and second, with Pete Pialllanida hot on their tail. Chapman assumed control of the lead when Carmichael bobbled in the back section, and Nelson and Piantanida wrestled for second place. By midmoto Nelson was on Chapman and the battle for the lead was getting hot. At one poim Nelson tried lO dive underneath Chapman, but collided, and both riders tumbled to the ground. Chapman was able to remount seconds before Nelson, buta lap later Nelson found the hot line by. Once in the Lead, he stayed there to the checkered. Chapman followed in for second with Carmichael in third. Moto two was much more tame, as Nelson took the early lead and stayed in from for the molO and overall wins, with Carmichael outdueling Piantanida for second in the moto and second overall. Craig Christian was as impressive as ever as he roosted into the lead at the start of both Vet Intermediate motos. Though Christian took both wins for the overall, he did have a shadow named David Rodriguez who kept his Yamaha in pursuit throughout both motos, waiting for the chance to slip by. That chance never materialized and Rodriguez had to settle for a pair of second places and second .' overall. Results 250 PRO: 1. Joe Bruce (S07); 2. Dustin Bloomfield (Hon); 3. Jimmy Clay (Su,); 4.
