Two-time World Superbike Champion Doug Polen is still undecided as to his plans ·for 1993. "I have no news, yet" Polen said on Wednesday, November 4. "I've built the most awesome supercross track on my 80 acres," said Cooper. "I just bought a water truck to add to my fleet of two tractors, one back-hoe and one 'dozer. I'm going to have to host a National or Supercross here some time. But, for now, I just have to convince Suzuki to come out here to do all of their testing." According to sources in Australia, 500cc World Championship Road Race Series runner-up Michael Doohan has left for Europe and will sign a contract with Rothmans Honda later this week. Doohan cont.inues the rehabilitation of the broken leg he suffered at Assen in June, and was a spectator at the November 8 Australian Formula One car race in Adelaide. riders may not compete in both classes. The 600cc support races will not be rounds of a National series, but the five 883 SpoTtster races will be part of AMA nears 200,000 members The Junior and Expert professional classes will be combined for AMA Grand National Series dirt track competition next year. Juniors with he American Motorcyclist Association is just 883 members away from an important milestone. Membership in the national association of motorcyclists stood at 199, 117 at the end of October, putting the Association less than 1000 members from its 1992 goal of 200,000. AMA membership has grown nearly 50% in the past decade, and is up nearly 9000 since the beginning of the year, putting the 200,000 mark within reach for the first time in the Association's 68-year history. "We have watched the membership numbers rising steadily over the past several years," said Ed Youngblood, AMA president. "Reaching 200,000 seemed impossible only a few years ago, but now it's within our reach." Mark Mederski, vice pres5dent of membership for the AMA, urged current AMA members to help put the Association over the top by signing up a friend now. "Call it an early Christmas present or whatever," said Mederski, "but bring a friend into the AMA before the end of the year. You'll be making an important contribution to the future of motorcycling in this country." What will a 200,000-member AMA do for America's motorcyclists? Mederski said it will give all motorcycle riders additional <;lout. "We'd like to reach 200,000 because it's a nice, round number," he said. "But there's more to it than that. When we contact legislators, testify at public hearings or take motorcyclist rights cases to court, it helps to have the backing of more motorcyclists. When we tell politicians we speak for 200,000 of their constituents, they pay attention." To sign up yourself or a friend in the AMA, ca1l800/AMA-JOIN (262-5646). T 80 or more points will be classified as GNC Experts, and may compete in all professional events, including the Grand National Championship class aboard 750cc twin-cylinder motorcycles. Juniors with less than 80 points will be classified as non-GNC Experts, and may compete in all professional events except Grand National Championship rounds. Juniors with less than 80 points that have considerable documented experience aboard 750cc twins may request a provisional GNC endorsement that will allow them to compete in Grand Nationals. Filling the void left by the now-defunct Junior portions of the program at Grand Nationals will be either 600cc Support or 883 Sportster Support races. Though there will be two classes at each Grand National (750cc and either 600cc or 883 SpoTtster Support), The Paris·to-Dakar Rally is back! After 13 consecutive years of conducting a rally from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, 1992 saw the rally's organizers change the route to Paristo-Cape Town (South Africa). The promoters, the Thierry Sabine Organisation, say that problems in Angola, Nigeria and Zaire gave them no option but to abandon plans for another Paris-Cape Town Rally and thus the return to the original Paris-Dakar route. The 1993 rally will start in Paris on December 28 and is tentatively scheduled to finish in Dakar on January 16.
