Several days after receiving a flu shot, Mueller suffered an allergic reaction, a rare nervous disorder - Guillan-Barre syndrome that causes weakness of the limbs. Hospitalized at first in his hometown of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, he was later moved to the Milwaukee hospital and placed on a respirator. Doctors say Mueller, who handles public relations for Mercury's outboard motor racing series, will be hospitalized for two to three weeks, but is expected to recover completely. The 1993 FIM World Championship Road Race Series will consist of 15 rounds, 13 of which have been finalized. The series will open for the first time in Australia with Eastern Creek hosting the race on March 28. The series will then head to Malaysia (Shah Alam) on April 4; Japan (Suzuka) on April 18; Spain (Jerez) on May 2; Austria (Salzburgring) on May 16; Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps) on May 30; Germany (Hockenheim) on June 20; Spain/Europe (Catalunya) on June 27; France (PaufRicard) pn July 18; Great Britain (Donington Park) on August I; Italy (Misano) on September 5; Canada (Montreal) on September 19; and South Africa (Kyalami) on October 3. According to the FIM, there are four applications for the final two dates and a decision .will be made no later than December 15. The 883 Sportster elass is open to all licensed dirt trackers, however, Grand National Champions from the past five years will not be allowed to compete. The latter stipulation prevents Scott Parker and Chris Carr from taking part in the 883 races. Eight-time National Enduro Champion Dick Burleson will play host to the annual Toys fOT Tots trail ride at the 30,000-acre Jellico Creek OR V Park in Winfield, Tennessee, on November 22. Team Suzuki's' Guy Cooper, who broke his leg at the Binghampton, New York; 125cc National MX in August, got the green light from his doctor to start riding again. The 600cc support races will not be rounds of a National series, but the five 883 SpoTtster races will be part of AMA nears 200,000 members The Junior and Expert professional classes will be combined for AMA Grand National Series dirt track competition next year. Juniors with he American Motorcyclist Association is just 883 members away from an important milestone. Membership in the national association of motorcyclists stood at 199, 117 at the end of October, putting the Association less than 1000 members from its 1992 goal of 200,000. AMA membership has grown nearly 50% in the past decade, and is up nearly 9000 since the beginning of the year, putting the 200,000 mark within reach for the first time in the Association's 68-year history. "We have watched the membership numbers rising steadily over the past several years," said Ed Youngblood, AMA president. "Reaching 200,000 seemed impossible only a few years ago, but now it's within our reach." Mark Mederski, vice pres5dent of membership for the AMA, urged current AMA members to help put the Association over the top by signing up a friend now. "Call it an early Christmas present or whatever," said Mederski, "but bring a friend into the AMA before the end of the year. You'll be making an important contribution to the future of motorcycling in this country." What will a 200,000-member AMA do for America's motorcyclists? Mederski said it will give all motorcycle riders additional <;lout. "We'd like to reach 200,000 because it's a nice, round number," he said. "But there's more to it than that. When we contact legislators, testify at public hearings or take motorcyclist rights cases to court, it helps to have the backing of more motorcyclists. Filling the void left by the now-defunct Junior portions of the program at Grand Nationals will be either 600cc Support or 883 Sportster Support races. Though there will be two classes at each Grand National (750cc and either 600cc or 883 SpoTtster Support), The Paris·to-Dakar Rally is back! After 13 consecutive years of conducting a rally from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, 1992 saw the rally's organizers change the route to Paristo-Cape Town (South Africa). The promoters, the Thierry Sabine Organisation, say that problems in Angola, Nigeria and Zaire gave them no option but to abandon plans for another Paris-Cape Town Rally and thus the return to the original Paris-Dakar route. The 1993 rally will start in Paris on December 28 and is tentatively scheduled to finish in Dakar on January 16.
