GFIFall Series South: Round 4 MOTOCROSS ~ ~ Phil Lawrence (65) led Mike Chamberlain (60), Donald Upton (632) and Craig Decker of( the line and through the first turn in the I25cc Pro class. Lou Soto (7L) grabbed the holeshot in the first Vet Novice moto, but had Tony Benner (42) and Mike Carr (3C) nipping at his heels. Pat Foster (PI) chased after Mark Toyama (86) in the 125cc Novice class. Foster eventually made the pass and went on to finish third overall. ,Decker dazzling at Perris By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, NOV. 1 awasaki Team Green's rookie pro Craig Decker showed his true potential by way of a double-moto sweep in the 2S0cc Pro class at round four of the GFI Fall Series South, held at Perris Raceway. Mike Metzger grabbed a tremendous holeshot at the start of the first moto and led Bryan Myerscough, Decker and Erik Kehoe through the first turn. Decker was flying, though, and within the first two turns had overtaken Myerscough and Metzger for the lead position. Kehoe worked on Metzger and found his way past a few laps later, but that's as far as he would get. Decker w,as far out of reach and scored an easy win. Kehoe was second, ahead of Phil Lawrence, who had worked into third after ~tarting well out of the top five. In the all~important second moto, Decker again worked into the point position before the completion of the first lap. Steven Kotajarvi turned a few heads by running a strong second in the opening laps of the moto. By the time Kehoe found a way past Kotajarvi, Decker was again long gone. Decker again greeted the checkered flag with a healthy lead over Kehoe, Lawrence,)oel Albrecht and Kotajarvi. "I just tried to get out front early and ride my own race," said Decker. K Kehoe avenged his 2S0cc defeat by trouncing both motos in the 12Scc Pro class. Kehoe holeshot the first moto aboard his Pro Circuit/ Axo-backed Honda and smoked away to a resounding win. While Kehoe styled out front, though, many riders fought for position behind him. Metzger and Lawrence battled over second, but coliided in mid-air over a jump and both went down. Lawrence remounted and soldiered on to finish second, while Metzger was ushered from the track too sore to continue. Mike Chamberlain and Decker battled over second all the way to the checkered flag. Chamberlain got the nod, while Kotajarvi and Donald Upton rounded out the top five. The second moto saw a four-way battle between Lawrence, Chamberlain, Kehoe and Decker evolve. Kehoe moved into second behind Lawrence after Chamberlain bobbled in a whoop section. Once into second, Kehoe dogged Lawrence for eight laps and planned his attack. . With two laps left, Kehoe jumped past Lawrence in a double-jump section, but Lawrence struck back in the next turn. Kehoe stole the lead for good in the supercross section, though, and ran away with the moto and overall wins. Decker and Chamberlain tangled in a turn and fell, with Decker remounting quickest to score third. Chamberlain salvaged fourth, but was clearly unhappy with the chain of events. joe Ryan looked like a sure winner in both of the 12Scc Beginner motos, but each time, tragedy struck at the last moment. In the first moto, Ryan grabbed the holeshot and built up a comfortable lead. On the last lap, he crashed in a set of jumps and handed the win to Cliff Cooks. Ryan holeshot the second moto and again appeared to be on his way to a runaway win, but he slid out and -crashed in the middle of the race. Cook again took over the lead and dashed to the moto and overall wins. Erik Hughes finished second, while Ryan remounted to salvage third. . Bill Carr and Mark Cook battled throughout the day in the 40+ Intermediate class. Carr held the advantage throughout the first moto, while Cook k~pt the pressure on him the whole way. Dennis Middleton finished a distant third. . In moto two, Cook grabbed the upper hand and had Carr in his shadow. Carr stalked Cook, and made his move in a set of jumps just before the finish line. Carr edged Cook by a hair to earn the moto and' overall wins. Middleton again finished third, ahead of Adrian Mesa. eN RESULTS PIW FIRST-TIMER DIV 1: 1. Justin Louie (Yam); 2. JeU Bell (Yam); 3.
