Pucharich arrived at the finish one minute behind Geu in third overall, but he had to overcome several problems along the way. "I rode conservatively the first loop and turned it up a bit in the second loop," said Pucharich. "I passed Kelly (Getz) just before Keegan's ditch, but after the race across the field, I backed off when we dipped into the ditch. I didn't want Kelly to get away from me, so I was staying real close and I got knocked off the bike with a low limb when I didn't duck low enough. It separated my shoulder again, plus I had a flat front tire the last 15 miles." After leading the early part of the race, Phil Converse faded and dropped back to a respectable fourth place at the finish, approximately four minutes behind Pucharich. "I was first into gas on loop one, and on the second loop at the gas stop, I was in fourth, but my energy was gone," said Converse. "All I could do was ride to the finish, and I still finished fourth overall behind Pucharich. I just need to be in better shape!" Dave Edsall was the top A class rider in seventh overall, and like most riders, he was in the survival mode by the time he reached the finish. "I was having . fun on the first loop, but I got real tired and ended up riding to the finish," said Edsall. "I didn't have any real game plan. I just wanted to keep it on two wheels and go as fast as I could. A few times, I didn't stick to the plan." Ray Posten topped the Super Seniors, but did a little more riding than he would· have preferred. After completing the first .loop at the head of his class, Posten waited for secondplace Gabby Hayes to show up, hoping that he would not have to ride the second loop. "Ray' (Posten) didn't want to ride a second loop any more than I did," said Hayes, "So he wasn't happy to see me. I called it a day but not before I made Ray take off on the second loop. Then his pit crew went off to' find him and tell him the good news." "I think we should take up a collection for Gusse to buy a chain saw," said third-place Super Senior Farrel Lord. "It's okay to have logs out there, but there were places where they were piled like toothpicks. Gusse lays out a good race, and if you want a challenge, this is the place to cOIl,le. I've moved to Tennessee, but I still keep coming back." Kell.y Moore came all the way from Boulder, Colorado, and was the only rider to compete in the Women's class. Moore took six hours to make it to the first gas stop. "Gusse puts on a good race, but I must confess that in some of those sections, I did use his name in vain," Moore said. tN c:::».... ~c:::» ~IIEIIE~ TELEVISION Ii RiCk JOh ~. ~ # 9111 9112 nSOn Broc Glover, Jeff Ward and many, many more!
