Gilliland on the gas at
Santa Fe Hare Scramble

Terry Gilliland scored the overall win at the
two-hour hare scramble held at Santa Fe Trail
Cycle Park.
Sixty-degree temperatures and clear skies
made perfect racin~ weather for the 60
entrants. Leigh Letellier put his KTM250 into
the lead at the first comer. He was followed
by Paul Weber, Terry Gilliland, Bruce
Korbelik, Jeff Schneider and Mike Patterson.
Gilliland and Patterson moved into second
and third, but were still more than a minute
behind at the halfway mark. Letellier suffered
a flat front tire on lap five and pitted for a
change, rejoining the race in sixth place.
Gilliland kept the gas on aJ;ld led the final
lap. Letellier moved up to challenge, but
as he was setting up the other KTM rider on
the motocross grass track section, a lapper fell
across his rear wheel and took him out. The
Letko Cycles/Dyno-PortiScottUSAlWD-40supported Gilliland completed eight laps for
the win, followed by Letellier, with Patterson
in third.
Farther back in the pack, Weber topped the
Open class on his Honda CR500 despite
numerous challenges by Tom Doherty. Perry
Keegan got a great start from the third wave
of four-strokes and 125s, while Mike Stanfield
was held up by a 125cc rider on the initial
lap, allowing Paul Dipasquale to catch up
and pass. They had clear sailing on the second
lap, and caught Keegan on the fourth circuit.
DIpasquale and Stanfield finished 20 seconds
apart, ill 14th and 15th overall.
