going good until ~he phragmites section, when I fell a couple times in the reeds and again in the section after .the spectator points near the road when we went back into the woods before the gas stop. From there, I was going okay until I got stuck in the same mudhole as Randy did, but I was able .to get my bike out of it faster than him and beat him to the check by two minutes. Russell gained a lot of time on both of us there, though. I think I could have tied Jeff and it would have went to the emergency checks, so that's why I tried to go extra hard in the last' couple of sections and go zero at the finish." Fifth overall Allan Gravitt of Team KTM narrowly missed fourth, which was claimed by KTM privateer Matt Stavish in the tie-breakers. "In the first tie-breaker section, I was at the back of a little bottleneck at a steep uphill," said Gravitt. "I decided to find an alternate route around it and did. When I started down the trail at the top of the hill, the guy who was stuck on the hill got going and T-boned me as I rode past. Once I recovered from that, I looped it on another hill. I was really concentrating on my timekeeping, especially in the six mile-per-hour section, and just used my head. The last 20 miles really tired me out as we've been riding local SETRA events and the longesuhey have been are 65 actual ground miles. Thankfully, it wasn't slippery." A couple of Gravitt's KTM teammates weren't so fortunate, as Pepper, who was second in the poInt standings going into this event, and Alan Randt both had bad days. Randt jammed his shoulder into a tree which made it impossible to continue, al\d his day ended at' 50 miles out. Pepper's problems weren't so physical. "I started out pretty good in the first loop in the morning and then I got' something stuck in the carburetor on my bike and I lost some time messing with that until I finally got it going," Pepper said. "Then, on the last loop, I checked into it with a flat rear tire, which slowed me down." Finishing in the sixth overall position would be another A class competitor, as Kawasaki-mounted Brad Lohman finished sixth overall and stormed to the 250cc A class win as well, beating Hines, Pepper and Husqvarna's Fred Hoess in the process.
