"I watched him a bit and he wasn't making any mistakes so I decided to keep a steady pace in second place and see what happened." Gardner's win in the Expert Heavyweight Superbike was a little more ofa tussle, though not much. Riding his Yamaha aWOl Superbike, Gardner took over the lead on the second lap, blowing past early leader Jimmy Adamo, who'd slowed dramatically, and extending his advantage. By the fifth of seven laps it was plus6.5 and would end up at 9.332 seconds. . Adamo was second, crossing the stripe a few seconds in front of Eric Moe, who ran third most of the race. Gardner also rode his Yamaha aWOl in the earlier Expert Unlimited GP, but he couldn't keep pace with Yoshimura Suzuki's recent recruit, Donald Jacks. Jacks led from the drop of the green flag, quickly pulling away and doing 'wheelies down ,the straightaway from the' west hOr<"...eshoe to the banking. Halfway into the seven-lap sprint, he . was about 13 seconds in front of Gardner, backing off to finish 10.651 in front at the end. . By winning the race, Jacks set a new' record of winning titles in six consecutive years, this race being his ninth title. "I'm really proud of the record I've set. I've raced against a lot of different riders over the years," the Floridian said. "Keeping the string going hasn't been easy. This is my personal bike. It's a 1988 Suzuki' GSXR750 with an '89 1100 motor. I brought it here to get one more championship and keep the string going. I won't have a chance to continue the string next year because I'll be riding for the Yoshimura Suzuki team," (N Results FRIDAY EX SPTSMN: I. Gary Stumm (Yam); 2. Mark Smith (W-R); 3. Kirk wins Honda ,Chctllenge Finctl By Henny Ray Abrams Photos by Daytona International Speedway and Abrams DAYTONA BEACH, FL, OCT. 18 f the 26 sprint races run during the Daytona Race of Champions, Two Brothers Racing's Rick Kirk only ended up winning one, but it was the cash 'race, the Oklahoman pocketing the $5000 first prize for winning the series finale of the Honda CBR900RR Challenge Series. The final brought together riders who'd qualified from a 63-race qualifying' schedule, with.27 riders making the race. Kirk started from the fourth row, made his way to the front on the second of 10 laps, and crossed the line with a 4.855 second cushion. . Kirk completed the 35.6-mile race in 20 minutes, 6.244 seconds at an average speed of 106.247 mph. Hall-N-Still Racing's Thomas Wilson got the upper hand ina three-way battle for second, Jamie Bowman third on the HondaYamaha Marine of West Palm Beach - moljnt, and Larry Locklear was- fourth riding a CBR900RR backed by Dallas Honda. _ "1 had had butterflies this big," Klrk said, his hands a few feet apart, in the winner's circle. ~'I had to start on the fourth· row and pick my lines to get out' front as soon as possible, I was watching my pit board and I knew I had a little cushion at the end," he added, after winning his first sprint race at Daytona. Kirk had won the Expert Unlimited Supersport race the previous day on the bike, but was disqualified when it was found to have an ignition rotor from a CBR600, an illegal modification: ThI600 rotor has about 10 to '15% less drag, according to a Honda employee, though Kirk said he could feel no difference in performance, The mistake was an oversight, according to Two Brothers Craig Erion. Erion' said the difference in rotors was "visually obvious," and that the bike had been around the shop for about a y!!ar. The correct, rotor was installed for the money race and the bike passed a post-race teardown, (Muzzy Kawasaki's Tripp Nobles was awarded the win in the ExpertUnlimited SuperSport race.) Floridian Danny Roberts got the jump on the field, Wilson a close second, but by the time they completed the first lap it was Larry Locklear in the lead, though . just for a minute, Wilson found he could make time up on the brakes and went under Locklear entering the International Horseshoe on the second lap to take the lead. Meanwhile, Kirk, who'd started on the O same
