before the halfway mark, Keystone was third, with N2 Racing/National fourth ahead of Team Magic. . As the two-hour mark approached Team Magic's day ended, with recent addition Bill Beech crashing in tum one after the left side of the front tire chunked. Fifth at that point went to T.B.R Racing. Dutchman had over a one-minute lead on Fastline/MCM as the riders approached two hours, but they would relinquish the lead soon after when Choate pitted and the crew got to work on the bike. New tires were fitted front and rear, and Zampach held a complete brake system, reservoir and calipers to be fitted, but it wasn't changed and he went out to chase Lynch about 15 secondsdown. . "1 was trying to ride real conservative. Just a real steady 'pace," Choate said. "There were quite a few traffic problems, quite a few slower riders. I want to ride real smooth and save the bike for Scott." . . Condron was back on for Gale, the Englishman unaware that the windscreen was broken. "1 was just trying to be easy on the engine, short-shifting it. I just want to finish this race," Gale said. Sabin took back the N2 Racing/National Car Rental bike from' Myers near the hour mark, the team slowed after being forced to change the brake'pads on the stock brakes, their quick-ehange calipers having broken in practice. "We changed both tires and the brake pads," Myers said. "It's a game of survival out there. H's shaking a lot and the front wheel's coming off the ground coming out of the chicane.. With the hard compound tire here, you have to be real careful getting on the gas." At the 2:17 mark Heino was back on for the run to the flag, fully fueled. But he returned to the pits a lap later. . "The clutch just went up in smoke," he said. He went out again for a lap, pitted again and a new clutch was fitted. Any chance of a top 10 finish was over, but Lynch went back out to an eventual 37th place finish. ..' Dutchman's Zampach was the leader and the run to the flag would be a smooth one. The team had over a lap lead with half an hour to go and Zampach cruised to the finish. "1 took it back for the third leg and put my -head down for two laps," Zampach said. "About that time Fastline had their problem and I didn't have to charge." "1 wanted to run the bike hard, but take it easy with the front tire so we didn't have to do a two tire change again and lose any time," Choate said. "My job was to bring the bike home." At the 2:30 mark, Keystone was second, T.B.R. third and N2 Racing/National Car Rental was fourth. But with· 10 minutes to go, the Condron and the Keystone bike came to a stop in the West Horseshoe, giving second to T.B.R. Racing's Bowman, who'd replaced Roberts about 10 minutes earlier. N2 Racing/National Car Rental's Sabin wasn't done though, and he ran do"Yl\ T.B.R. in the last half-hour to take second place, T.B.~. ending third. "It's been a really great year for me, and Jamie, as well," Roberts said. "We had a little trouble with a wobble that wouldn't go away." Keystone would finish fifth in class, .fourth going to Moriwaki Racing. GTU As .!!ley had most of the year, Moto Liberty/Nankai proved that they were the team to bea t in the GTU class. Danny,Walker took off from the rest of the GTU class that started in the second Dutchman Racing won their first endurance race of the year, topping N2 RacinglNational Car Rental by two laps. wave, but by the end of the first half hour he was up to 11th overall. Yamaha of Leesburg's Glenn Barry was second GTU, 12th overall, ~ith IRC Racing's Glenn Szarek third, and 13th overall. The GTU order didn't change at the hour mark, though the smaller bikes began cutting through their bigge'r counterparts, even though they were already pitting. Szarek was in first at the 49-minute mark, the team forced to come in early. "We had to switch. bikes and use the supersport bike," Szarek explained. "The tank's not giving us the mileage we needed. Normally, we make three stops. It looks like we'll make four. We broke the rod on our endurance bike at Texas World last week. We put new tires on the supersport bike. The valve cover's been off once all year. We're a little down on power so we have to find somebody to draft. You do what you can on the brakes and in the comers." Jon Roberts replaced Glenn Barry just before the hour, with Doug Carmichael taking over for Danny W~lker. Bill Hornblower was out first on the Hornblower bike, handing off to Jon Cornwell, the team ending the first hour fourth in class. "1 told Doug to stay up on the banking really high and it'll pull top gear with the gearing we have," Walker said. "If you come down, you run into a headwind." Roberts moved past Szarek just past the hour mark, the pair battling up to the halfway point, Goldstein on for Szarek just past midpoint, the change dropping the pair to third, Hornblower up to fourth. . Carmichael had the Dallas-based team iIp to fifth overall by the halfway point, but as the two-hour mark approached, the Moto Liberty/Nankai Honda CBR600. quit on the infield, temporarily stranding Carmichael. "It sputtered in tum one and I put it on reserve and it quit on the infield," Carmichael said. "1 pushed with one foot and used the start to get it to' the pickup truck in the chicane. It's a long way around the bottom. I tried starting it in the crash truck all the way around here. We unloaded it and Danny started it right up." Vapor lock was among the more likely possibilities for the problem. As _Carmichael was paddling, Roberts was giving the Yamaha of The Yamaha of Leesburg (4) entry won the GTU portion of the race and finished second overall with riders Glenn Barry, Jon Roberts and Michael Barnes. L.eesburg bike to Barnes, the Team America rider setting off with a healthy lead for the final hour. He lapped IRC Racing just past the 2:30 mark, stopped for gas with less than 20 minutes to go, and brought the bike into the winner's circle with better than a one lap cushion. "To come here and win is fantastic," Roberts said. "We recruited Mike Barnes to ride the last leg after Glenn Barry and myself rode. Everything worked out great." Glenn Szarek took back over for Larry Goldstein at the 2:26 mark and held onto second place to the finish, the team'a lap in front of Hornblower. "You get a chance to make up for a lot of things, a lot of problems, just by staying out there and running as long as you can," Szarek said. "We whittled away at it. We had to change our refueling and that cost us time." Hornblower took third, they, too, holding a lap cushion at. the flag, Cornwell bringing it home. . "1 want to thank Bill (Hornblower) for having me ride the bike," Cornwell said. "This is the first race for this bike since Daytona in March when we really blew up the engine, broke a rod, destroyed the cases and transmission." "It's been 20 years of racing for me," Hdrnblowersaid. "I'm not quite as fast as some of these riders now, but with Jon out there, it sort of equalizes things." eN Results ENDURANcE O/A: I.
