GFI Fall Series South: Round one M OrOeROSS ~ ~ Lamson red hot at Perris By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, ocr. II teve Lamson leveled the competition in the 250cc Pro class aboard formerCamel Supercross Champion JeanMichel Bayle's factory Honda during the GFI Fall Series opener, held at Perris Raceway. Lamson recently switched from the factory Suzuki race team to join the current Camel Supercross and 250cc National Champion Jeff Stanton, 125cc West Coast Supercross Champion Jeremy McGrath and newcomer Doug Henry for what he hopes will be a championship year in 1993. "I feel right at home with Jeff, Jeremy and Doug. The team is the best there is and I feel really good on the Honda. I know I have the best equipment and the best people behind me for 1993, I look forward to a winning season," said Lamson. Tony Amaradio holeshot the first moto followed by Mike Chamberlain and Donald Upton. Lamson narrowly avoided a second turn pileup, but the time lost avoiding the carnage left him out of the top 10. Chamberlain shot past Amaradio by the start of the second lap and instantly opened up a small lead. Craig Decker entered the frame after a mid-pack start and was soon challenging Upton for third. Decker wasted little time chasing Upton, and moved past and into . third. By the fifth lap of the 15-lap moto, it became evident that Lamson was the fastest rider on the track. Lamson moved into fifth behind Upton, and within two turns was fourth behind Decker. Decker fought back repeated challenges from Lamson, but after two laps he too fell victim to Lamson's pressure. The next rider that Lamson would catch was Amaradio, who was running a solid second That too, was soon to change as Lamson caught and passed Amaradio during the next lap. Lamson set his sights on leader Chamberlain, but like the rest of the competition, he too was no match for Lamson. Lamson simply powered past and roosted away for the moto win. Chamberlain finished the moto second, while Upton, Decker and Albrecht rounded out the top five. Chamberlain shot to the front of the pack at the start of the second moto while the rest of the riders jockeyed for position. Lamson emerged second as the riders rounded the first lap with Amaradio, Albrecht and Opton in tow. Lamson dashed along the inside of Chamberlain during the second lap and LOok the lead.· With that, Lamson screamed his Honda around the track, while setting a pace that was unequaled by any other rider. Lamson went on for a landslide victory while Chamberlain again crossed the line in second Amaradio finished third a distance behind Chamberlain, while Willie Surratt made a remarkable charge from nearly last to fourth at the finish. Lamson collected the lion's share of the 200% Pro payback and left an impression on the competition that won't soon be forgotten. . Chamberlain may have settled for second in the 25Qcc class, but he was without a doubt the star in the 125cc Pro class. Chamberlain battled his way past a determined Amaradio in the first moto to score· the eventual win. In the second moto, it would be Dana Wiggins who provided the excitement for Chamberlain. S Wiggins was riding with a fast, controlled pace, but Chamberlain finally stormed past the Honda rider near the halfway point in the moto. Once into the lead, Chamberlain pulled away for the moto and overall win. Craig Decker rode with true persistence and was rewarded with a laterace pass on Wiggins for second. Kenny Maddux turned a lot of heads by taking the holeshot in the first 250cc Intermediate class moto. Maddux originally signed up for the Novice class, but the GFI rider classification committee detemined that Maddux should be riding the Intermediate class. Maddux proved them correct as he battled with Denni Dahlin throughout the entire moto for the lead Dahlin appeared to be a bit more experienced and scored the win, while Maddux rode an impressive race for second followed by RG Bennett, Brian Curtis and Kevin Geyer. The second moto saw Kelly Pichel, Bennett and Maddux running in the front three places while first moto winner Dahlin was way back in the pack and well out of the top 10. Dahlin was riding with a veng~nce and began to pass riders two and three at a time while quickly moving up towards the leaders. Bennett displaced . Pichel and moved. into the lead spot as both Geyer and Dahlin moved into the top five. Both Pichel and Maddux began to fade, dropping back to sixth and seventh, respectfully. The race for the lead spot quickly developed into a battle between Bennett and Dahlin. The two riders battled for three laps, but Dahlin seemed to have a sharper edge and made the pass. For all intent and purposes, the race was over. Dahlin smoked away for the moto and overall win, followed across the line by Bennett and Geyer. m Californian Steve Lamson chose to make his Team Honda debut at the GFI Winter Series and trounced the competition in the 250cc Pro class.
