MCCormick manages Oregon Dunes Motocross By Don Schneider WINCHESTER BAY, OR, SEPT. 26 Jason McCormick won the 125cc Pro class at Oregon Dunes MX's inaugural evenL Open-class racer Gary Bronikowslc.i holeshOl the first combined 125/500cc Pro moto, with Don Boespflug trailing. In the 125cc class, McCormick and Tony Graves ate the roost of the big bikes for a couple of laps before Graves wicked it by McCormick and Boespflug. Graves began to dog Bronikowski, taking over the lead position by midmot9. Apparently not content with second place, Bronikowski attempted to take 'the lead back in a comer, but instead took out both Graves and himself. McCormick was ready for the miscue and took over the , lead, while Graves remounted and soon moved up to the rear fender of McCormick. Graves attempted a last-minute pass at the checkers, but McCormick held on to win. Bronikowski crossed the line in third, scorin~ the moto wi,n in the 500cc class. Gary Beyer fmished second 500cc. Moto two's start was the same as the first round, but the leading Bronikowski couldn't hold off the fierce assault of Graves and McCormick. The duo sped by nearly simultaneously down the front straight on lap two. Graves gradually pulled out a six-second lead by midmoto, and Beyer reeled in and passed Bronikowski for first 500cc. With only three laps remaining, Graves washed out at the end of a straight, going down and stalling his machine. McCormick' took advantage and scooted by with the lead, while Grayes remounted some three seconds back. McCormick led all the way to the finish, although Graves attempted another last-ditch pass at the checkers. Beyer finished first 500cc for the class win, while McCormick placed first overall in the 125cc divison. . Results P/W: I. Joshua Phillips; 2. Buddy Mason; 3. Aaron Hinzman: 4. Jason Housman; 5. Windham wild at Swan MX By Kat Spann TYLER, TX, SEPT. 27 Kevin Windham showed that he is capable of making the transition from minis to the big bikes, smoking both the l25cc Intermediate and Open classes at Swan Motocross Park. After word spread through the pits that Team Green cohorts Windham and Robbie Skaggs' would both be making their Texas debut in the 125cc Intermediate class, spectators began to line the fences. Expert Robbie Reynard shot off the line with the lead in the combined moto, followed by Intermediates Brian Rister, J.J. Slagle and Team Green/AXO/Bell/Scott-backed Windham. The riders disappeared into the woods and when Reynard reappeared, it was Windham who emerged behind him. Joey Pratt was next, ahead of Slagle and Skaggs. Pratt slid out in a sweeper and remounted behind the pack. Early in lap two, sixth-place Interm.ediate Freddie Mitchell took an inside line on Mike Boliver in the whoops w take over the fifth spot. Rister suffered a flat tire and dropped Oul of the race, moving everyone behind him up one p?sition. Boliver was the next to drop out, With a seized engine. Pratt recovered from his early miscue and was railing through the pack, eventually working hi~ way up to fifth place. Windham motored W Ihe win ahead of Skaggs. In moto two, Rister returned with a repaired tire, and Boliver was back with a borrowed bike. Reynard opted to sit out the moto and let the Intermediates have the track to themselves. Windham once again pulled ahead early on,leading Skag~s, Pratt, Mitchell and Rister through the hrst lap. Skaggs slipped back to fourth in the woods.section, letting Pratt into second. When the white flag came out, the top two positons were the same, with Windham leading Pratt by three seconds. Windham held on for the win, with Pratt's 5-2 ~ore earning him second overall. NEW EGYPT, NY, SEPT. 20 Tim Ferry, who many are calling a future National Champion, won the 125cc Expert class at Powerline Park's Dunlop Garden State Championship. The Kawasalc.i rider looked w be on his way to the win in the 250cc Expert division as well, but missed the final moto. Ferry, a 17-year-old from West Palm Beach, Florida, gave a superlative performance, taking command early in each 125cc Expert mow' and keeping a firm lead until the checkered flag. Though Ferry gave up each holeshot, it did not take long for him to break out of the pack and get in front. The mototwo lead was handed to him after Barry Carsten and Damien Plotts collided on the third lap. Ferry was ready, and sailed into first, building a strong lead by the time Carsten and Plotts recovered. The 250cc Expert competition narrowed to combat between Ferry, Carsten and Scott SheaK. Jerry Seip snared the moto-one holeshot, and Ferry took off with Joel Dengler in hot pursuiL Dengler passed Ferry and looked like he was ready to dominate the moto, but a crash on lap three brought Dengler back to fourth spot. Ferry took the opportunity to open up a wide lead. Sheak and Carsten spent six laps trying to close the gap on Ferry, but couldn't catch up. . An afternoon flight back to Florida, prevented Ferry from continuing his performance in the second moto. Without him to contend with, Carsten and Sheak were each in a position to grnb the overall. Sheak was a bike length ahead of Carsten off the start. With each jump, Sheak gOt more and more air, flipping his bike sideways at every opportunity. Carsten kept pace, riding with his usual smooth style. The two took the rocker section side by side on the third lap, but Carsten broke loose and pulled into first. Carsten cruised in the first slot with Sheak on his rear fender until the final flag. Results 125 EX: I. Tim Ferry; 2. Barry Carsten; 3. Brian Carroll; 4. Scott Sheak; 5. Keith Triccoli. 250 EX: I. Cunninghams win big at Millville Motocross By Rolfe Otterness MILLVILLE, MN, SEPT. 13 Craig and Lance Cunningham each took command in their respective class, charging to wins in both mows of the Mini Senior and Junior classes. Craig led every lap in the Senior class mows while Aaron Pape and Ty Machino traded places, going 3-2 and 2-3. Lance cruised out front in both motos of the Junior class while Cory Huppert did a good job taking control of second over Randy Palmer. . John Martin's track was in excellent condition, thanks w his preparation and the cooperative weather. Over 300 entries were signed up in the various District 23 classes. The sandwash was still full of the large whoops left after the pro race and it gave many riders fits, but the track was tacky and dustfree all day. . The biggest single class of the day was the Plus 25 class, and Mike Graif jumped into the lead on the first lap with Bryan Hunt and Scott Steinle in pursuit. Graif led for two laps but leaned into a dirt bank at the end of the whoops and stalled his engine. Hunt ran into him and Steinle took the lead. Hunt was first to recover and took off after Steinle, with Graif up quickly to maintain third. Hunt tracked down Steinle and went by for the win while Graif hit the dirt bank once again and lost several more places. Dave Engstrom took third with Grail displacing Bill Engstrom on the last lap for a fourth-place finish. Hunt took contol in the second mow with Graif and Bill Engstrom in tow for the duration. Dana Hunt had to pass several riders in the early laps to take over fourth with Aaron Kolb in tow. From then on the order stayed the same. Hunt's I-I score took the overall with Graif going 4-2, Bill Engstrom taking a 5-3 and Dave Engstrom a 3-7 for fourth overalL The 125cc A class featured National Amateur star Cory Keeney wringing his Kawasalc.i ·KX out to the limit as he blitzed the pack in both motos. Jim Povolny was riding very strong and held second throughout the ,first moto and most of the second until Aaron Carlson finally deposed of him on the last lap. Brian.
