nical all the way, and it took a toll on the tiring riders. "There was nothing really difficult the whole way. I just started giving out in the last loop," said Sorenson, who was pushing hard to hold onto second. "I haven't raced since May." The final loop ~ook an even heavier toll on Bill Maxim, who lost the Over40 lead when he broke his chain near the halfway point. But the final section was smooth sailing all the way for Hamel. His bike stayed out in front all the way, and when he took the checkered flag just after 12.30 p.m., he was five minutes ahead of the nearest competition. "Once I caught Roeseler, I had no problems from there on in," said Kawasaki!Answer/Metzeler/Maxima/Acerbis/Beam/Don Joy/RK/ F&L/N-Style/Powerbar/Pro-Circuit/ Scott USA/Scotts/Back Canteen/ Shoei/Sprocket Spec.lMXA-backed Hamel. "It was a good course." Privateer Ed Sorenson galloped home in second to grab 250cc honors, and Brandon Gerber brought his Open class racer across the line four minutes back to claim third. "I'm lucky to make it here. My swing arm bolt is coming out," said Gerber. Fourth overall and Four-Stroke honors were earned by defending fourstroke National champ Don Griewe, and Lewis finished hard on his heels to take fifth. "It was too fast. It wasn't National caliber," said Griewe. "The course was laid out really well, but it needed to be a lot tighter." Lewis agreed: "That was nasty. It needed to be tougher so we could pass in the dust." Paul Ostbo captured Over-30 honors for the fifth time in six tries and locked up the Vet title for the second year in a row. Curtis Dice brought his Yamaha home in seventh to claim second in the class, and Jim Gray ·finished eighth. ''I'm used to tight trees. I hate this wide-open fast stuff," said Gray. "I came just for the experience - the desert racing experience. I had a blast." Jeff Capt led the 125cc racers home in 13th overall and took over the class points lead. "It wasn't a 125cc course. The first two loops were wide open," said Capt. "But I had no problems. No crashes. Everything worked to a T." Chance Maughan took second in the 125cc division just three places back and Mark Barlage claimed third in 22nd overall. Preston Gerber led the Over 50 contenders home in 19th overall. In the Over-40 class, winner Mitch Hedrich crossed the finish in 23rd overall. A last minute get-off-and-push on a tricky uphill earned top Amateur honors for Kawasaki KX250 racer Thane Stanworth. Stanworth's efforts carried him around Yamaha pilot Shawn Maxfield, who had to be content with a second-place finish. "It sure wore me out," said Maxfield. eN Results O/A: I. Danny Hamel (Kaw); 2.
