~ MOTOCROSS AM! National Chainpionship SOO/125cc MX Series: Final rounds ~ Team Kawasaki's Mike Kiedrowski added the 500cc National Championship crown to the two 125cc titles he earned in 1989 and '91. He was the runner-up in both motos. about third, but my back shock was a little stiff and my arms pumped up," Hughes explained. "The track was real rutted. There was nothing 1 could do." Emig attacked the second moto as he had the first, but this time LaRocco had a little better luck. The Kawasaki rider crossed the line seventh after the first lap, covered in mud, but on the move. He moved up to third on the next lap and on the fourth lap passed Tichenor for second, but he was still six seconds behind Emig. laRocco was able to cut into the lead, narrowing it to three seconds at the halfway point but lost ground on the eighth lap when he fell behind a lapped rider. Emig knew laRocco was there but wasn't concerned. "If he had been right there, maybe 1 would've been worried. I think the closest he got was two seconds," Emig said. The margin was close again at the end, but LaRocco fell for the second time securing Emig's unchallenged win for the day, and title. "1 was thinking of bringing my dad and sister out here, but I wanted to keep everything as normal as possible," Emig said. "1 wanted to treat it as just another race." Second went to LaRocco with third fought down to the wire. Tichenor was third from the start, but Hughes, Larry Ward, and Lamson were all within striking distance. Then Hughes began to close on Tichenor, and Lamson began to make a run at Ward. Hughes was almost up on Tichenor on the 11th lap, with Lamson now alone in fifth after relegating Ward to sixth. When the two-lap board was shown, Hughes was right on Tichenor's tail and passed him on the final lap. Tichenor was back in front but fell toward the end of the race. "It was the last mota of the year, and 1 said 1 just had to go out and do it," Hughes said. "1 like the mud. It's fun." "Ryan passed me. Then I passed him back and crashed," Tichenor said. "1 didn·t get a very good start in the second mota and I was concentrating on not making mistakes." Lamson took fifth, Ward sixth and Doug Henry seventh. c::N RESULTS 500 MOTO 1: 1. jeff Stanton (Han); 2. Mike Kiedrowski (Kaw); 3. jean-Michel Bayle (Han); 4. jeff Ward (Kaw); 5.
