Putnam ends Thunderbird ST season with win By Grace DiBenedetto MUSKEGON, MI, SEPT. 19 Mike Putnam wasted little time in securing the 400cc class victory in what was the final short track of the season at Thunderbird Raceway. Putnam and his Yamaha grabbed the holeshot, lost the lead temporarily to KTMmounted Paul Wackerle, and then rode off to take the win. The battle for second heated up with Jay Scott, Tom Harper, John Belliel and Lonnie Wadle chasing down Wackerle with the riders going four wide in tum one. With Putnam out front alone, the race for second stayed in doubt to the finish. Wadle eventually established himseU in the runner-up spot, leaving Wackerle to finish third. The race for the lead in the 85cc final was a battle between Brandon Rose and Brice Edmonds. That lasted until Rose slid to a stop in tum three on the first lap, his Yamaha pinning him to the ground. .The 85cc champion escaped without injury, but his' bike was minus a clutch lever. Rose was lined up at the back of the sta~gered restart and was assisted in bump startIng his bike as the rest of the pack roared off the line. The race didn't last long again, with Billy Humphries going down in the same spot as Rose. On the restart, Edmonds again took the lead with Rose picking off riders on his way to the top. At the flag it was Edmonds over Rose. Rocky Watson was the big winner in the Senior class after John Belliel suffered mechanical failure on the final lap. Belliel had opened an impressive lead on the field by the white-flag lap, but could only watch as Watson took the win. In DTX action, Jason Sentell took the win and the championship on his Kawasaki after holding off advances from Jeff Randolph. Results 38 50: I. Edwin Barber (Yam); 2. Justin Humphries (Yam); 5. ATLANTA, GA, SEPT. 26-27 Craig Gaver shrugged off the inclement weather and ran away with the AMAlCCS Expert Unlimited GP race at Road Atlanta. While the rain poured down, Gaver got a good ·st.;lrt and immediately opened up a sizeable lead over Joe Brett Wilhams and the rest of the pack. Gaver was never challenged, leading the entire race and scoring the easy win. Williams claimed second and Danny Roberts followed them in for a third-place finish. "It was my first time on rain tires," said Gaver after his win. "I think I like itl" Tripp Nobles also made an appearance at Road Atlanta, testing a new front end. Tripp ran the Unlimited race, but had tire problems and never got the grip he needed. Nobles did come back to win the Expert Heavyweight Supersport, however. Results EX U/L.S/SPRT: J. Hough rough at Haspin Acres MX By Jim Fliehman LAUREL, IN, SEPT. 12-13 Kawasaki Team Green's Kurt Hough was the man to beat at Haspin Acres MX's Saturday night motocross, as he won both the 125 and the 250cc classes. Hough ran into some stiff competition in the Dash for Cash, however, as Rick Denney and Steve Cross put on a show that distanced them from Hough. Denney took control of the second moto and pulled away for the overall win and the lion's share of the cash prize. Cross settled for second overall. On the second day of the two-day event, Jason Boyd rode strong in the Dash for Cash. Boyd was able to pull away from the pack in both motos, while Cross followed hi!Tl home in second both times, again claiming second overall. In Sunday's Open class, Mike Faulk, Donny Lewis and Billy Hastings battled hard, showing how fast 500cc bikes cart go on thJ: long track. Hastings crashed in the first turn of moto one, letting Lewis pull away to the win. After remounting, Hastings worked his way up to a third-place finish by the checkered flag. Hastings again went down in moto two. Faulk took command and pushed hard all the way to the finish, notching the moto and overall wins. Steve Richards posted a perfect 1-1 moto tally in the l25cc class on ·Sunday. Jeff Brewer was able to keep up with the Kawasaki rider, but couldn't find a way around and settled for the runner-up position. Results SATURDAY DFC: 1. Rick Denney (Hon); 2. Steve Cross (SU1); 5. Sober VICTORVILLE, CA, SEPT. 27 Fourteen-year-old Matt Becker scored 13 total points to earn the United States Junior National Championship victory at Speedway USA. In all, eight division one and nine division two riders competed in'20 four-man, four-lap heat races. The first round of division-one heats opened with Becker and Angela Hale riding' to predictable wins. The second round fielded possibly the most talent-rich lineup of the day as Becker and Hale joined Petie Peralta and l2-year-old Travis MacDonald, who may have been participating in his final'"Speedway event. Hale got a quick start out of lane one and drove wire to wire for the win. MacDonald looked good in second place, as Becker salvaged what would have been a disastrous heat by passing Peralta, who seemed to be off his game. Tim Cochren picked up the three-point win in the second heat of the round, as pole-silter Michael Hull's bike broke and Billy Hanniro fell. The third of five rounds started with MacDonald notching his first win, while Becker also won despite constant pressure from Hale, who finished a mere two bike lengths behind. The fourth round's first three points went to Billy Jannior, who managed to hold off Peralta and Hull. Going into the next heat, Hale had eight total points while Becker was still trailing her by a point. Becker and Hale gated together and entered the first turn side by side. Coming down the back straight, Becker seemed to gain a slight advantage on the outside, as Hale stuck with the smOOther inside line. On the final lap MacDonald moved up close behind Hale and slipped underneath her as she bobbled slightly coming off the final turn. With that finishing order, Becker took a one-point lead and MacDonald found himself tied with Hale for second place with one ride to go. MacDonald knew what was required of him in the final round to have a chance at the Championship trophy. He had to beat Hale
