v ICES Letters to the editor 0 INSIDE Fresno fiasco FEATURES ROAD RACE TRIALS Team Motorcyclist Magazine best at Willow Springs 24-Hour West. Roche gains ground at Dutch World Superbike round Spencer smokes in Kyalami GP bike test session Young tops Escoheag National 15 6 MOTOCROSS 12 Lewis, Huffman hot at Sunrise Trans-Cal round John Percival Los Banos, CA 18 HARE SCRAMBLES RESULTS 10 .19, 46 I4 LOCAL RACING 20 CALENDAR HILLCUMB Schreiber, Frazier over the top at Freemansburg National The wives, mothers and girlfriends have a vested interest in our racers, and we need a voice. We can easily pick out the wild out-of-control racers because we dread to see them in the same race as our own rider. The AMA officials seem to be blind to the consequences of these wild riders. Or could it be that with TV coverage and large crowds who enjoy these crashes, safety is being ignored? Cycle News and TV gave large coverage to Rusty Rogers, who was recently involved in a crash with Will Davis. This attention encourages continued irresponsible action. Why not highlight the good safe riders? Rusty was only suspended for one race. George Price was not even suspended when our son (Kris Kiser) was taken out for the entire season, and possibly had his raci!1g career ended. Since the AMA officials have taken no action in our son's case, our only alternative is legal action. I suggest the perpetrator be suspended until the hurt rider is able to ride again, up to a oneyear maximum. Let's put rules in which we women can live with. Our riders are not fodder put up for TV and crowd enjoyment. Riders are professionals and should promote a safe sport, not try to destroy it! 16 DEPARTMENTS Hrehor hammers Sun~y Creek National Riders are not fodder The dictionary defines fiasco as an ignominious failure. This description defines the Fresno Mile to a T. Poor track preparation, riders refusing to race, and to top it off, box seats that only let you see half the track. The promoter owes me a refund. Bring back the San Jose Mile. 28 WANT ADS , 34 ON THE FRONT PAGE: Randy Renfrow led Team Motorcyclist Magazine to victory at the Willow Springs 24-Hour West. For the full story, see page 6. Photo by Kinney Jones. We're told that the San Jose Mile will probably return' to the AMA Grand National Championship Series next year. Stay tuned . .. Editor. Sport can't afford blackmark Ten years ago I attended my first National dirt track race and have since become a "fanatic." I plan vacations around out-of-state races, the AMA race result hotline is on my speed dial, and Cycle News is a major weekly event. On September 13, I walked out of my first race ever. After being at the (Fresno Mile) track for over six hours with practice not complete, racers refusing to ride because of dangerous conditions, and crowd in an obviously agitated mood, my wife and I made the decision to leave. With more and more competition for the recreational dollar, our sport cannot afford this type of blackmark. a America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Volume XXIX Michael Klinger, Publisher Caroline Gendry, Executive Secretary to the Publisher Editorial Jack Mangus, Associate Publisher/Editor Kit Palmer, Associate Editor Paul Carruthers, Associate Editor Donn Maeda, Associate Editor Chris Jonnum, Assistant Editor Edwina Mangus, Calendar Editor Advertising Terry Pratt, National Accounts Manager Mark Thome, Western ales Manager Thomas R. A city the size of Fresno could easily draw crowds to National motorcycle races, but only if they are run as National-class races. Dave Phillips Sanger, CA Jean Kiser Kailua-Kona, HI Kris Kiser suffered ligament injuries in his knee at the Parkersburg Half Mile round of the Camel Pro Series. Ms. Kiser, in light of your calling for more suspensions to be meted out, would you please explain to us how reporting the suspension of a rider "encourages continued irresponsible action." As for highlighting safe riders, we do that every week on nearly every page . .. Editor. Vote! You made my day This is an open letter to Scott Parker, Chris Carr, Kevin Atherton and Jay Springsteen: You made my·day when you put your bikes in your vans at Fresno! I've been attending motorcycle races for over 40 years and can't begin to .count the times I've thought the riders should stick together and refuse to ride. I never thought I would see it happen. You did it! It's long overdue! It's a first! It's a start! Don't back down! Because of your actions at Fresno, maybe the promoters will get the message - no track, no show! With brave riders like you and others who joined the boycott, maybe racing will be safer and we won't have to lose any more riders like Steve Eklund. I support you 100% and am looking forward to a fast track and a safe race in Sacramento: Dorothy Frost San Jose, CA Valuable lesson I learned a valuable lesson at the Fresno Mile National. America loves a winner, but we love survivors even more. I applaud every rider who stayed and raced. They simply adjusted to the track conditions and put on the show that race fans paid to see. I have attended many Nationals over the years, but this was the first time that I stayed around after the race to get autographs. You guys are heroes. Tom Marshall Canyon Country, CA On September 17, a major newspaper listed all the national Senate races and predicted victory for candidates who do riot support off-road use of public lands by "we the people." They are basing this on a projected 43% voter turnout on election day, November 3. We have many friends iil this challenging struggle - ranchers, the mining industry and .automotive people who enjoy off-roading as a family sport. The bright side for us is the projected 43% voter turnout. If we push to get our people better 'organized, we can get our people elected. We are inviting everyone to Hansen Dam Park in Sylmar, California, on Saturday, October 31, for the first Clayton Foundation MotorspoTts Display Day. The candidates backed by the AMA have already been invited to attend and at least plan on doing so. H you are not registered to vote, you have until October 5 to do so. Voter registration forms are available at post offices and fire departments. We are out to win. See you in the winner's circle!
