Trubey tops Desert Sun GP By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, SEPT. 7 Lasting 45 minutes on the demanding Los Angeles County Raceway Grand Prix track is hard enough, yet Jason Trubey did it on a IO-year-old Suzuki RM250 to win the Decade class at California Racing Club's Desert Sun G.P. The race was the third and final race of the 15th Annual Tri-Race Series. Trubey rounded the first tum ahead of Ric Reynenson and Dal Trubey Jr. Reynertson began to hound Trubey, showing his front wheel to the leader in several turns. With his 1982 Yamaha YZI25 screaming, Reynertson kept the pressure applied in the powerrobbing sand for the entire 45 minute race. Trubey ended up taking the checkered flag first with a comfortable cushion over Reynertson. Byron Greene's lead lasted exactly one lap in the Junior Vet Novice class before some confusion arose as to the track direction.·Both Kenny Safford and Daniel Lorenze slipped past Greene while he recovered from his offtrack excursion. By the third lap, Green worked back into the lead position where he stayed until the finish. Safford and Lorenze provided most of the close action in the race as they battled for second place. Safford came out on top. The Over The Hill Gang Beginner class win went to Steve Basmajian who had a huge lead at the checkered flag. "I was third off the start and into second by the second tum," said Basmajian. "Ron Garcia led the first half of the first lap before I passed him, then I caught up to and started passing the novices. I passed all the novices but the leader, I just had great endurance today." Randy Bruce had an equally impressive ride .as he came from the back of the pack to capture the OTHG Novice win. "I had a little trouble on the start and was P/W A: I. Scott Howe; 2. Neese nails Hidden Acres MX By Barbara and Loren Williams KINGSPORT, TN, AUG. 30 Team Green's Jim Neese overcame challenges by Chad Lough and Shane Templeton to walk off with overall victories in both the 125cc A and 250cc A classes at round seven of the TFi-State Series, held at Hidden Acres MX. Templeton grabbed the point position in the first 125cc A moto and began to pull away from the field. Try as he might, second-place Neese couldn't get around the leading Suzuki. At the end of lap two Templeton got a flat tire and slowed, allowing Neese to blast into the lead and Lough to close up on his rear fender. For the nex.t lap, Templeton labored to keep up with Neese and hold off Lough, finally giving up tmd pulling off the track. Neese remained in front and looked to have the win buttoned up until he went down on lap six and handed the lead to Lough.' Remounting quickly, Neese soon caught up and attempted to regain the lead position, only. to hit the dirt again. Lough cruised to an easy win, as Neese was unable to regain the necessary momentum to reel him in. Lough jumped to the front on the stan of moto two, followed by Neese and Templeton, plus the rest of the field. Templeton couldn't come to terms with his replacement rear tire, and finished where he had started, in third. Neese pulled up behind Lough ~t the end of the second lap and began to threaten him in the corners. Lough went down in a hairpin and Neese took over the lead. Lough held down second place for the rest of the race, as Neese coasted to an easy win. Templeton gained the early lead in the first 250cc A round, but Neese out-jumped him at the end of lap two over the finish-line tabletop. Lough then stepped up to challenge Templeton for second, and the two Suzuki riders provided side-by-side racing for nearly half the race. Lough finally ducked to the inside on a corner that he'd been taking on the outside, and made the pass when Templeton moved over to block the outer line. Neese won, with Lough in second. Riding on the momentum of his first-moto win, Neese claimed the 250cc A second-round holeshot and led the entire race. While running a strong second place, Lough's rear brake failed, forcing him to drop out. Templeton stepped up to the plate and appeared to be holdmg his own, even advancing on Neese, but Templeton dropped out on lap six with mechanical ills. Cox cruised to second behind Neese, who was awarded the overall victory. Results 50 STK: I. Je£flrey Fiels (Yam); 2. Chase Roberts (Yam); 3. Chase Jones (Yam); 4. Allen Tuttle (Yam); 5. Johnson jams at Ohio Motocross By Peggy Adamic RAVENNA, OH, SEPT. 6 Wiesco Piston-sponsored Yamaha rider Steve Johnson bagged the overall 250cc A class win with 2-1 moto finishes at round two of the CRA Fall Motocross Series held at Ohio International Raceway. Nearly 300 riders were on hand as Johnson battled the field of Experts. David Hand holeshot moto one ahead of Johnson, with Mike Katin and a string of riders in tow. Hand pOSted a wire-to-wire win. Johnson swapped places with Katin, but was back in second before the start of lap two. John Sahy motored up from his eighth place start to take hold of fourth within the first three laps. Barney Barnett routed into fifth as Shay went to work on Katin. Hand and Johnson remained 1-2, with Hand holding a two-second advantage over Johnson. By mid-moto, Shay had moved ahead of Katin and into third. Katin lost one more spot to Barnett a lap later. Hand met the checkered three seconds ahead of Johnson. Shay, Barnett and Katin filed in behind. In moto two, Johnson powered his Yamaha through turn one ahead of John Mavar, Hand and Mike Boggia. Hand and Boggia dispensed of Mavar within the first half lap, and Hand moved in on Johnson. The two front-runners were joined by Boggia in a three-way tire-totire battle for the lead, but it was Johnson who prevailed at the finish.
