Fontes (lies to LACR MX win By Greg Robertson Myers brothers win at Grand Bay ST By Steve Gemignani GRAND BAY, AL, SEPT. 5 Bobby Myers rode to an easy victory in the Pro feature at J&J Speedway, while his brother, Robby Myers, scored the win in the Sportsman class. The first Pro heat saw Tim Myers take off to an early lead, which was soon eclipsed with a third lap pass by brother Bobby Myers aboard a Motorcycles Plus/Mobile Mini-Indysponsored Honda 600. Bobby held on for the win, with Tim Lorge and Tim Myers bringing up second and third with a near photo-finish. Heat two of the Pro class was an .exercise in brinkmanship, as Lorge, Bobby Myers and Tim Myers each touched bikes at least once during the race. When the dust settled, though, Lorge was on top with Tim Myers and Bobby Myers again in a very close overall finish. In the Pro final, Bobby Myers got the holeshot and refused to relinquish the lead, although both Tim Myers and Lorge each made several efforts to take it on every lap. Sportsman heats one and two offered !he most lead swapping of the evening, with Steve Lorge, Stu Roper and Robby Myers each taking turns at the point.. In the end of each, however, it was Myers who went for a successful last-lap pass in order to take the checkered flag. The evening was not kind to Roper, who suffered mechanical gremlins in the final laps of both the first heat and the sportsman feature. At one point, Roper had a threesecond lead on Myers, until the last lap where history repeated itseU from the first heat race. Results PRO: 1. Bobby Myers (Hon); 2. Tim Myers (Yam); 5. Reimer romps at Perris MX By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 12 Bill Reimer kicked up clouds of dust en route to back-to-back moto wins in the Vet Novice class durin~ the return of GFI Super Saturday MX at Perns Raceway. Reimer gated perfectly in the first Vet . Novice moto and was followed by hard charging Mark Hali, Scott Carnahan and Greg Wheatfield. H;ali passed Reimer on the opening lap but stalled his machine near the finish line turn. Reimer, once again, had a clear track. in front and continued to forge ahead. At the halfway point, Reimer was challenged by Carnahan and Pete Vetrano, who charged to third after starting back in ninth place. . Vetrano slipped past Carnahan for second then pressured Reimer for the lead, but was unable to pass him. Aron Briggs moved up from fifth to pass Carnahan on the last lap for third. The second moto saw Reimer out front and in control from the drop of the gate to the checkered flag. Carnahan was second across the line followed by Rodenbeck, Fitzgerald and Vetrano. Former BMX National champ Eric Carter posted a pair of moto wins in the 125cc Novice class. Carter's main opposition was Tim Olson, who led both motos only to give up the lead to an aggressive Carter. PALMDALE, CA, SEPT. 11 The temperature was cool but the racing was as hot as ever in the 250cc Beginner class, where Jason Fontes used a two moto sweep to earn the win under the lights at California Racing Club's Friday night motocross, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. Fontes led the pack of riders into the first turn in moto one and grabbed the early lead. Josh Rispo was second before falling twice and dropping to lOth. Jason Richter inherited second with Jason Moe a close third. The two riders closed in on leader Fontes. By the final lap, it was a three-rider sprint to the checkered . flag. At the finish. line, it was Fontes inches ahead of Richter with Moe in their shadows. Bob Leftwich took fourth and Bispo. worked back up to fifth. The second moto start belonged to Fontes with Bispo and Moe in hot pursuit. Fontes wasted no time and quickly pulled away from the pack. Bispo ran second for a few laps before bobbling in a turn, allowing Oakley Lehman to take over. A charging Richter passed Lehman for second with a couple of laps remaining. Fontes took the moto win with a 15-second cushion. Second went to Richter with Moe coming up through the pack to steal third from Lehman on the last lap. Both Junior Vet Beginner motos were 'dominated by Mark GeobeI. The Honda rider holeshot both races and pulled away to win with big margins. Michael Cobb, Vance Kelley and Tom Rene each took a turn running in the number two position, but it was Rene who was there when it counted at the finish in moto one. Second place was again up for grabs in moto two as Kelley, Cobbs and Jeff Treat fought it out. At the midway point, Kelley turned up the throttle and took charge of the runnerup position all the way to the finish. Treat earned third and Todd Ailes worked up to capture fourth. Bill Kolkman collected a first place trophy in the Vet Novice class with his I-I score. Bob Shimp gated fourth in the opening' race and worked past Joseph Billings and Stacy Skaggs to finish second. Joe Zipay moved into third ahead of Skaggs at the checkered flag. Billings holeshot and led the second moto for a lap before Skaggs pushed him back to second. Kolkman'steadily worked from a midpack start to relieve Skaggs of the front position halfway through the moto. It was Kolkman all alone out in front at the finish. Skaggs' second place finish gave him second overall edging out Zipay's 3-3 rides. Results P/W MOD: l. Scou Howe (Rcp); 2. Michael. Bragg (Yarn). P/W A: l. Jerry Martinez (Yam). P/W B 0·1: l. Thunder Ridge Mtn. Hare Scrambles win to Norton By :(\fichael Snyder EDMONSTON, NY, SEPT. 6 Team Mirage's Tommy Norton flew his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-decor Honda CR.250 to the overall victory at the Thunder Ridge Mountain Hare Scrambles, which was the 12th round of the New England Trail Riders Association (NETRA) Hare Scrambles Series. More than 1.70 riders turned out for the race that featured much of the same course that was used for the National Championship Hare Scrambles held here in July. Norton didn't get off to one of his better starts and, had to come from behind before taking control of the number one position by the end of the first lap. From that point on, it was all Norton and his green/red-painted Honda, as he cros'sed the finish line going away. Peter Gunn out-lasted a duel for the n,mner-up honor. When the AA class charged off the starting line, it was Cris Crispin leading the way with Paul Millinken, John Towlee, Gunn, Mike Pydych, Norton and Randy McCann funneling in behind the leader. "I was dead last off the line, but 'when we all went down the big downhill on the MX course, everyone went wide, so I s'Yooped on the inside and passed everyone," said Crispin of his early lead. Unfortunately for Crispin, his moment of glory didn't last for long, as he crashed shortly after entering the woods section of the course. When the riders entered the scoring section after the first lap, Norton was the front-runner by a comfortable distance over Towlee and Gunn, who were involved in a close battle for second. The dogfight for runner-up honors lasted for more \han three laps until Towlee crashed and bent the chain ~uide on his KTM, which ultimately slowed hts pace for the rest of the race. Gunn settled into a lonely second, while Norton continued to stretch out his lead. Norton would eventually score a seemingly easy win over Gunn. "I got a really bad start but hammered into the lead early on, because I wanted to get out front just in case it started to rain," said Norton. "I've just got to keep plugging away at the paints lead Crispin has, and I think I have enough races to reclaim my championship. " Runner-up Gunn said, "I crashed a couple of times on the first couple of laps. After Towlee crashed I just rode my own race." Crispin, who was the early leader before crashing, fought back to claim third overall, just ahead of Towlee and Pydych. Mike Hines out-dueled Patrick Timothy for the Open A class victory. "I had an excellent battle with Pat (Timothy); we pushed each other way ahead of third-place," said Hines. That third-place rider was Chris McGirr. Another close finish came in the 250cc A class, where Keith Rodger nipped P.J. Peculis for the win.
