"Terry is so smooth and perfect through the woods that I watched him more than the trail," admitted Hrehor. "He showed me some very good lines that I would use later in the race when Plessinger caught up to me. I stayed behind Terry for about a lap and then tried to go a little faster but still smooth and easy." Cunningham faded slightly once Hrehor reclaimed the lead and eventually slipped back and ended up finishing in fifth place. "I caught back up to Jan with two laps to go and decided against making a run at him, because I didn't want to eat all that dust and have my filter clog up on me," said Plessinger, the 1989 National Hare Scrambles Champion. "I wanted to ride smart all day and keep an eye on gaining points, not just winning. I was right where I wanted to be at the end, but I didn't get any breaks when it came to Jan. I might've been able to catch him but it really wasn't worth it. Besides, he really got going after the white flag." "I came around expecting .them to show me one lap to go but instead they showed two laps to go," said Jan. "That worried me because Plessinger was close, so I decided to go very fast right away and see if he would stay with me. He did not try to come up front, so I knew that I would win the race if I just rode easy on the last trail." Hrehor eventually held on to earn the win with Plessinger a distant and lonely second. Conner's recovery from a poor start was completed when he reached third position, though the 24year-old Kawasaki rider almost upset Plessinger's plan of gaining a few positions on fourth-place Summers. "After we gassed, Scott (Summers) and I hooked up and made some fast laps late in the race," said Conner. "It seemed as if we were riding flawlessly . together, but Jan was always ahead of us; he must've had some kind of race! Right before the last lap I had a few problems and lost any chance of catching Jan, anyway." £N Defending champ Scott Summers (1) leads Jan Hrehor (21) and series points leader Scott Plessinger early in the race.
