Olance Darling (84) qualified for 1m first National of the year and turned in a C3IftI'-best figish of sevmth. Gng Czow (61) was lIth. Tim Selby held on for the win in the 12-lap Junior National. 10 Pegram put the power to the ground best when the green light flashed and for all intent and purposes, the race was over. Pegram appeared to be riding a different track than the rest, as he pulled away from the pack. Pegram's lead would eventually stretch to nine seconds. "Coming off the comers was really bad, but it was rideable," said Pegram. "We rode the whole 20 laps and no one wrecked, so that goes to show that it was rideable. Once I got out front I just tried to stay smooth, I was confident at the start and I knew that I could win. I felt comfortable on the track all day long." Rogers and Graham rounded the first tum in second and third, respectively, but would never change positions. Rogers finished with a four-second cushion over Graham. "I felt pretty comfortable the whole time, but there were a lot of dose calls," said Rogers. "My front wheel left the ground a bunch of times, the straights were so rough. I'm just glad to be back. At the five lap signal the bike started to break up, but she made it home. It felt like it was running out of gas." Graham rode consistently throughout the race but, like Rogers, suffered many dose calls. "Next to the Daytona 200, that was the toughest race I've ever run," exdaimed Graham. "I was swapping all over the place. The insides of my legs are all bruised up from the bike sJamming from left to right. It was tough." Roeder, Ingram and Jones provided the most excitement in the main, as they repeatedly passed each other while battling over fourth. Jones looked to have fourth wrapped up but flew off the groove on lap 15. "The bleeder valve backed out of the rear brake assembly," said Jones, who salvaged an eventual ninth-place finish. "I went into tum one and when I went for the brakes the pedal went all the way down." Roeder was glad to inherit fourth and went on to enjoy his best-ever finish on . a mile track, while Ingram rounded out the top five. "Man, the track started wearing me out," said Roeder. "My feet were flying off and I was bouncing allover, but you gotta do what you gotta do." '1 rode my half mile monoshock bike because it was so rough," said Ingram. "It was just down on power." Morehead finished a straightaway behind Ingram in sixth, with Darling on his tail again. "H;e sure came to life today," said Morehead. "He was on my ass in the heat, but he broke. Then in the main I heard him on my ass again." "Steve was getting me out of the comers," said Darling, who completed the first lap in 13th. "He was hooking up while I was bouncing around" Jones and Jennernan rounded out the top 10, while Beattie, Dillon, Durelle and McBee rounded out the finishers. Poovey pulled off after two laps and Camlin was black-flagged for riding too slow. "It was so dusty that I couldn't see a thing," said Poovey. "The bumps were . bad enough, not seeing them was even worse." "You had to start the main to be paid for it," said Camlin. "I did what I had to do." Camlin said that when he received the black flag he "flipped off" the referee, who later told him he was being fined $300 for his actions. Junior National Series points leader James Hart WOI) the first s~-lap Junior heat, and his championship rival, Tim Selby, won the second heat. The third heat race win went to Ben Bostrom. At the start of the main, bad luck struck Hart as the dutch on his water-cooled Wooc;l-Rotax went out. Hart started the Junior National on the penalty line, and pushed his bike off to a rolling start. Things could not have looked better for Hart's series championship rival Selby, as he rocketed off the line with the holeshot. Selby enjoyed the lead for less than a lap, though, as Chad Barth parted company with his bike on the first lap and brought out the red flag. Barth was unhurt and was able to make the restart Selby duplicated his holeshot on the restart and led Bostrom, Jaime Aguilar, Ricky Smith and Ronnie Brown through tum one. Hart scooted into sixth on the first lap. Selby and Bostrom engaged in a heated battle that carried them well ahead of Aguilar and Smith, who also dueled for position. On the last lap, Bostrom went for a last ditch pass on the outside of tum four as they raced towards the checkered flag, but he slipped off the groove and was gobbled up by the holes. Bostrom was spit off his machine but was unhurt and able to scramble off the track in time to see Smith inherit second Aguilar finished third, while Brown and Hart rounded out the top five. "I knew Bostrom was back there, and I figured that he'd try to get me coming. out of four" said Ventura H-D/Fresno H-D/Aztec Racing-sponsored Selby. "I just held my line and it worked out. It's too bad that he fell." With one round left in the Junior National Championship Series, Hart leads Selby 136-123. "I was hoping to clinch the championship here. I didn't want to ride the Castle Rock IT," said Han "But it looks like I'll have to now." m HEAT 1: I. Billy Hcmdoo (Hon); 2. Steve Beattit (H·D); 3. Larry Pegram (H-D); 4. Mike 1nderbittin (HD).
