Moural :wins Cydeland MX Garcia grabs Mid-State ST win By Michael Rich By Mike Vancil Bryan Villella topped the $2000 Pro-Am dassat 1-96 Speedway's Short Track event. Pro-Am rookie Brian Borgman prevailed in a dose race at the Lake Odessa ST. PASO ROBLES, CA, AUG. 29 Frankie Garcia made his return to short-track racing a successful one, as he won both the 500cc Expert and the Open Expert finals at the Mid-State Fairgrounds. The veteran rider has taken nearly a full season off from racing to pursue his education, but it was clear that Garcia was back for good when he scored first- and second-place finishes in his two heat races. Despite his early success, however, Garcia admitted that he was tired after.the two 10-lap events. Garcia rested up before the l2-lap 500cc Expert final, and jumped out to an early lead. Garcia settled into the inside groove and wasn't about to give up his line to secondplace Michel1e DiSalvo. DiSalvo held on to finish second, besting all of the male competitors except for Garcia. In the Open Expert final, Garcia again powered into the lead with a firm grip on the inside groove. DiSalvo's luck wasn't as good, as she was involved in a two-rider mishap that forced a restart. DiSalvo didn't fare well on the restart, and Danny Ritchie followed Garcia home in second place. .In the Pee Wee 50cc final, Christopher Wesney used lapped riders to his advantage to earo the overall win. Wesney overcame a . poor start by using the inside corners to pass his way into the lead by the third lap. Cole Lambert settled for second place. llesuits P/W 50: I. Christopher Wesney (Mor); 2. Villella victorious at 1-96 ST unfamiliar ride to his liking, powering past Jack Mayer to win his heat race. Villella was a little slow off the line in heat number two, and had to fight for the first two laps to find a way around Brent Armbruster. Villella finally managed a pass as the two riders carne out of turn four on the third lap. Once ahead, Villella had to work hard to keep Armbruster back, but he held on for the win. Sims smoked off the line in the final, with Villella in second. Villella was.working hard. for the lead, but it took him eight laps to get by Sims. Once on top, Villella stayO:! on the gas until the checkered flag dropped after 10 laps. . In the Combo race, Pat Buchanan was the top dog. Buchanan got the holeshot in the final and held off a greedy Sims to the wire. After getting .disqualified from the Pro-Am class, Ron Forstner finished a close third in the Combo final. Borgman bombs Lake Odessa ST By Grace DiBenedetto LAKE ODESSA, MI, AUG. 29 First-year Pro-Am rider Brian Borgman rode to an emotional victory in the support race at the 2nd Annual 600cc National at 1-96 Speedway. The 1-96 race is one of the few Nationals to offer a Pro-Am support race, and 22 riders took advantage of it. Shortey's Cycle/Quad-L Corp.lDankie Cycle-sponsored Borgman got a poor start in his heat race, leaving the line in fourth. Rob Williams had the holeshot, with Paul Kops, Mark Davidson and Borgman on his rear fender. Borgman tried to pass Davidson by taking the high line on the second lap, but the groove narrowed and he couldn't get by. On the third lap, Davidson drifted wide and let Borgman into third, and one lap later Kops also opened the door for Borgman, who swept into second place. Borgman ran out of time, and had to follow the leading Williams across the line in second. In the final, Williams again charged out of the start in first, while Borgman shot through the middle of the pack into second place. John Lowe was in close pursuit. Borgman was sandwiched between the two Rotax riders until the third lap., when the leading Williams drifted wide in turn three and Borgman squeezed into the fmnt position. By the time Williams was back on the MARYSVILLE, CA, AUG. 30 Honda-mounted Lowell Moural Jr. completely dominated the combined Intermediate/Pro race to take the cash at the last race of the season at Chico's Cycleland Speedway. As the gate dropped on the first·moto, it was Lowell Moural Sr. powering into the lead followed by Bill Rogers and Danny Rutherford. Moural Jr. missed the start and trailed the pack in last place. As the leaders finished the first lap, Rutherford out-jumped Rogers on the double. to take over .second. Rogers stayed close and as the duo came over the hill jump.""Rogers pushed Rutherford back to third once again. By this time, Moural Jr. had ripped through the pack and moved around both Rutherford and Rogers on the back straight. One lap later, he outjumped his father over the doubles to take the lead. Moural Sr. still had some fight left in him and repassed Moural Jr. with a block pass in one of the tight hairpins. Father and son ran nose to tail for the next two laps often using each other for berms in the turns. Moral Jr. finally got tired of the game, blew past his father in the rockers and never looked back. Moural Jr. took the win followed by his father and Rogers. Moural Sr. again took the holeshot in the second moto fol1owed by Rogers. This time, however, Moural Jr. gated third and wasted .no time.in going to the front. By the end of the first lap Moural Jr. had taken the lead and was beginning to move away from his pursuers. Rogers' stay in third place was shortlived, as he endoed over one of the small tabletops. Rogers' bike drove him hard into the ground as it landed on his back breaking his collarbone. The crash moved Dylan Bl·ackwell into third. On the next lap, however, Rogers' son Aaron passed Blackwell. and quickly moved away. Lowell Moural Jr. took the win and the overall. His father, Lowell Moural Sr. finished second. Results P/W: I.
