but at the end of lap 22 the champ, Carr, Graham, Atherton and Durelle crossed the line in a clump and entered turn one even closer together. , It was Carr who held the lead Crossing the line at the end of lap 23, but he got pushed to the edge of the groove in turn one by Graham and it was .Parker who got the drive out of turn two and he held the lead as the white flag was displayed. Parker's momentum continued and he once again got a strong drive out of turn two and then duplicated it out of turn four to thwart anyone's attempt to draft by him; Laying down on the tank, Parker crossed the line the winner - for a record 10th time at Springfield. Carr, doing what he had to do, finished second, and Graham third. . "We fell in line the first 10 laps," Parker said, "and then the racing began. The last 10 laps were the fastest of the day." Asked if the knee he injured at the Oklahoma City Half Mile had bothered him, Parker said, "No. It aggravated me all week, but it was no problem in the race. "That was a good close race," Parker said. "When you run 25 laps and don't bump anyone, that's good clean racing." Although Carr is more than aware of the fact that Parker must win every race to even have a chance at overtaking him, Carr wasn't smiling.after the race. "A win would have been nice," said Carr, "but we're going out to the West Coast to a couple of tracks where I do real good. We got snakebit here two, years ago (when he was black-flagged for a leaking oil tank), but we didn't today." Carr agreed the race had been a twostage one. "Yeah, we were conserving tires at the start. I started out with a new edge and the one lap we had before it was restarted helped me, because I got to buff the tire in." Asked if the rumor that Camel was pulling out of dirt track racing and that this would possibly be the last year that a Grand National Champion could look forward to receiving a $100,000 share of the point fund was a driving factor in his going for the championship, Carr said, ''I'm not in this for the money. Sure, I've made a good income, but if I were in it for the money I would have gone road racing years ago. It's for the plate. The Grand National Championship plate. That's what I want." Bill Werner, Parker's tuner, said the race was one of the finest he had ever seen, and he compared his rider's .performance to that of a veteran baseball pitcher. "You look at a rookie pitcher and he just goes out there and smokes the ball in there. Then you look at a veteran pitcher, one who has' been through countless battles on the diamond, and he uses his savvy, his experience to get the job done. Scottie was like a veteran pitcher today." Junior National It was certainly Ben BostroIJl'S day. The young rider from nothern California - a member of the racing Bostrom family (his father was California TT champ in 1968 and his uncle a Nationally ranked competitor) - was the quickest of the Juniors in time trials, logging a 36.320 lap, he romped home the winner in his heat and then held off a strong chailenge from runner-up and current Junior National points leader James Hart to win the 15-lap Junior National, his second National win of the season. The Junior National's grid had heat What's a freight train? This is a freight train. Steve Morehead (42) leads 11 other semi-finalists on Springfield's front straight. What's a draft pass? Check out Dan Ingram (31), Rod Farris (92), Jim Sumner (45), Morehead and Greg Sims (10). "---------------------------------race winners Bostrom, Hart and Jess Roeder joined by Ray Dugan, Ty Howard and championship contender Tim Selby on the front row. But the initial start was red-flagged and Roeder was sent to the penalty line. Making strong arm gestures, he argued with the referee, but you know who won the argument. When the field got the green light the second time, it was Hart first off the line - the front line - but Roeder blasted off the' penalty line and was in the middle of the pack by the time it hit turn one. . "When I got penalized, I got mad,"Roeder said. The second generation racer was in .the lead when the first lap ended and he crossed the line first the next two laps as well, involved in a four-rider scrap with Hart, Bostrom and Selby. Selby was first to the line at the end of the fourth lap, but it was Roeder back in front at the end of laps five and six. But going through turns one and two at the beginning of the seventh lap, Roeder slipped off the groove and all but lost tauch with the frontrunners. On the foilowing lap, the eighth, Selby dropped out of the race and in doing so dropped back from what had been a close points race with Hart for the Junior National title. The race wound down with Bostrom and Hart carrying on a two-man war that Bostrom got the better of when Hart slipped the groove in turns three and four on the last lap. Bostrom crossed the finish line the winner with Hart coming up short and having to settle for second. Roeder was third, a short distance behind Hart. "I thought I would draft him," Hart said, "but I got into the last turn a little hot and lost him." Knowing t):lat Selby had dropped out and that he now led the Junior National point standings by 23 points with just.. two rounds - the Castle Rock TT and Fresno Mile - remaining, Hart said, "We'll skip Castle Rock and race Fresno." Ventura & Fresno Harley-Davidson/ Aztec Racing-sponsored Bostrom said he started the race thinking he should conserve his tire, but "those guys made me forget that real quick." eN Results QUALIFYING: I.
