; 0FF•ROAD International Six Days Enduro m The American pit was a busy place moments before the riders had to impound their bikes at the end of each day. (5OOcc). Rodney Smith (5OOcc) was sixth, 2.55.seconds off Jonsson's pace. Day six Ken Brown, who broke his jaw on day one, left the hospital for a few hours so he could spectate at the final MX special test. He made many new mends that day. Silver medalist Dan Harte gets his timecard punched at check five on day four. 8 The Italian Trophy team managed to gain a lot of time on the Swedes in the special test sections, however, and closed to within 8.43 seconds by the end of the day. Spain was still a distant third, comfortably ahead of Holland and Poland. Little had changed in the Junior World ranks, as Sweden continued to gain a few more seconds on the secondand third-place Czechoslovakian and U.S. teams. As far as overall individual results were concerned, 500cc class-leader Sala maintained his overall advantage by a slim 4.64 seconds over the 25Occ-class leader Swede Joachim Hedendahl, while 25Occclass rider Giorgio Grasso was third, a distant 44.05 seconds behind Hedendahl. Only 1.59 seconds behind Grasso was fellow Italian Paolo Fellegara (500cc), and just 0.56 seconds behind Fellegara was fifth-place Swede Sven-Erik Jonsson There was a lot at stake at the final MX special test on Sunday. The World Trophy title was up for grabs, as were the SO, 250 and 500cc class titles and the individual overall title. Only the Junior World Trophy team title and the winners of the 125cc and 350 and 500cc FourStroke classes were all but decided. But before the riders lined up for the motocross, they had a shoTt 3I-mile trail to ride from the Parc Farme to the MX special test. Along the way, they had to negotiate a huge mudhole that was inside a giant drainage tunnel. Mter a few riders went through, the hole became major bog and many riders were left stranded, or arrived late for the MX test. U.S. Club rider Dwain Taylor, who looked to be' headed to a certain silver medal, fried his Suzuki's clutch in the mud and never made it to the test. And U.S. Junior Trophy rider Steve Hatch dropped 15 trail points trying to extract himself from the mud. Officials later threw out the section and Taylor was eventually awarded his silver medal, while Hatch was not penalized for being late. Fellegara clicked off the fastest time in the 250cc class but came up 2.74 seconds short of beating Hedendahl for the overall 250cc class charI!pionship. Grasso ended up third in class, 43.92 seconds behind Hedendahl. Rounding out the top five overall were Sweden's Dick Wicksell and Australia's Shane Watts. The best American overall finish in the 250cc class was Steve Hatch, last year's "Top American." Hatch finished II th, three places ahead of Suzuki teammate and three-time AMA National Enduro Champion Randy Hawkins. Rodney Smith and Sala battled back and forth in the 500cc final moto, wim Smith getting the upper hand on the last lap to score the win. However, Smith had to beat Sala by 42.99 seconds in order to win the class and overall, but unfortunately for him, he only beat by 1.08 seconds. This meant that the class win and ultimately the overall individual championship went to Sala. However, Smith did beat Sven-Erik Jonsson by 25.15 seconds, which was more than enough for the American to pass the Sw~e and move into second place in class and fourth in the overall standings. Sala Danny Hamel was the next-best finishing American in the 500cc class in 14th overall, one position ahead of teammate Chris Smith. Italian Stefano Passeri recorded the quickest time in the 125cc class, but it wasn't enough to beat Sweden's Jeff Nilsson for the class title. Passeri ended up second, while Jimmy Lewis, in fifth, was the top-finishing American 125cc rider. Despite finishing second to Sweden's Jimmie Eriksson in the 350cc FourStroke final moto, Italian Mario Rinaldi easily out-distanced Eriksson for the overall class title. American David Rhodes finished fifth, three spots ahead of former AMA National Enduro Champion Kevin Hines. Czech rider Jaroslav Katrinak might have been the fastest iil the 500cc FourStroke final MX test, but it was Italian Fabio Farioli scoring the overall class win. Farioli had almost one full minute to spare in the final points tally over runner-up Bill Andersson of Sweden. Curt Wilcox was America's best class finisher in 11 tho The 80cc class was won by yet another Italian, Pierfranco Muraglia, who was just three seconds ahead of fellow countryman Gianmarco Rossi. When it was allover, it was the Italian Trophy team celebrating the loudest. They' had scored a dramatic last-day, come-from-behind victory over Sweden, largely in part to their superior speed in the final MX special tests. Italy's final total points score was 282.08 to Sweden's tN 395.24. Results 80: J. Pierfranco Mwaglia (Kaw) IlaIy; 2. Gianmarco Rossi (HRD) IlaIy; 3. Madej Wrobel (TM) Finland; 1.
