Brant moved around Faria once more to claim the six points awarded for third place. Faria. who was comPeting in Russia for the United States in the Champion's Cup during the first two rounds, finished this first qualifier with 17 points. Some fans expressed the opinion that the National Champion should be seeded directly into the National Championship. Sober SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 19 Round three of the United States Speedway National Championship qualifiers became a showcase for 19-year-old Chris Manchester, who won every race he entered and scored a maximum 21 points in the process. Manchester's perfect night brought his three-event total to 54 points, just one point less than co-leaders Bobby Schwartz and Scott Brant. Brant and Schwartz, who were deadlocked for the points lead coming into round three each scored '19 points to maintain their tie. The 24-rider field completed the mandatory 18 heat races and began the 16-rider semifinals with Brant and Manchester still sporting perfect scores of nine points. Just one point back were Bart Bast, Bobby Schwartz, and National Champion Mike Faria. Gary Hicks, Brent Werner and Charlie Venegas checked in with seven points apiece. Faria bested Bast in the first semi, while Schwartz showed Bobby Hedden the fastest way around in the second semi. Manchester finished well ahead of the field in semi number three. while Brant beat Venegas in the next race. In the Consolation race, Venegas was the second rider off the line, .trailing Lucero early but blasting past as the pack headed down the back straight on the opening lap. Bast also moved past Lucero before the checkered £lag to claim second place. The points leader has the honor of choosing his starting lane for the main event, but since Brant and Manchester were tied with 13 points each, a coin toss was needed to determine that Brant would have first choice. He chose lane four on the extreme outside. Manchester then surprised some by picking lane number two. Faria chose the pole. When the tapes were released, Manchester emerged in the lead as the pack exited the initial turns and blazed down the back straight. Schwartz was a close second place in the first two laps but could not mount an effective assault and finally had to settle for second place. Faria was the third rider out of the blocks, but seemed a step slower than LQJ 0 , i " 1::fi:!J !.f ':.11 ' 0./.0 ER chain is the same chain used by Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha motocross and supercross Works Teams. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90803 Buehl tops Meigs County Fair SX MIIGS COUNTY, OH, AUG. 19 Je~omy Buehl brought his Team Peck/Pro Circuit Hondas to the fourth round of the Coors Light 1991 Action Sports Summer Supercross Series held at the Meigs .County Fairgrounds and won three of four Pro motos. Buehl got the best jump in the first 125cc Pro moto and led the field through the first turn, chased by Josh Steel and Jay Poling. Buehl opened up a six-second lead by the third lap. Steel, in turn, enjoyed a six-second lead on Poling. Buehl and Steel were all along out front at the finish over Chuck Reed. In the second moto, Reed and Buehl led the field through the first turn, Reed and Buehl pulled away to a three-second lead over Steel. Buehl stayed on Reed's rear wheel, despite a bobble on the third lap, and on lap five his pressure paid off. Buehl and Reed went over the triples side-by-side, but Buehl had the momentum and the inside line and he grabbed the lead. Reed was just happy· to not crash. Buehl romped off with the win, with Reed claiming second. Steel finished third. eN Results . MICRO: 1. ChristOpher Whitcraft (Yam); 2. David Whitcraft (Yam); 3. Willy Browning (Yam); 4.
