One of my prizes was a new JT helmet with a custom paint job by Kollers Kolors. Throughout the day, donated items were auctioned off to benefit Chadd Watts, who is Ryan Hughes mechanic. Watts was seriously injured in an auto accident recently. . I talked with Racing Enterprise's Frank Thomson and we decided to raffle off the helmet I won at the Marty Smith Grand Prix at Carlsbad Raceway on September 6. All proceeds will go to help Chadd. If you plan to be at Carlsbad, be sure to enter the raffle, because not only will you have a chance to win a beautiful helmet, you will also help someone in need. I request that you make a correction regarding your coverage of theAugust 16 125cc National MX at Spring Creek Raceway in Millville, Minnesota. It was Brian Roth, not Mike Roth, who got the holeshot and led the pack for one lap (in the first moto). (Mike) LaRocco did not get the holeshot nor did he lead after the first turn. This was accomplished by Team Green rider Brian Roth; Mike Roth was in the 500cc National, not the 125cc National. It isn't often that a young rider, new to National competition, can holeshot and lead for one lap against such esteemed riders. I can understand how mistakes are made, but these new National riders hope for two things: good finishes and media coverage. ON THE FRONT PAGE: Not on this range Defending 500cc Road Race World Champion Wayne Rainey led the Brazilian Grand Prix from start to finish and closed the gap on series points leader Michael Doohan. Jeff Russell was unfairly deprived of a win. Kevin Varnes absolutely did not pullalongside Russell on the back straightaway and there was a,bsolutely no opening to pass. This was a one-sided deliberate move to hit the rider he could not pass fairly. This was not a questionable situation and with Varnes being disqualfied, Russell should have received the win. This type of non-professional riding gets riders hurt. Hopefully, the AMA will start fining or penalizing (riders for) this type of riding. Jeff Russell was the rider who received the most severe penalty. BobCambou Meridian, ID In the Sturgis Short Track report Cambou is referring to, reporter Dave Hoenig said, "On the last lap, Varnes pulled alongside Russell down the back straightaway and dove to the inside of turn three. The two riders made contact and Russell went down, while Varnes went on to greet the checkered flag ... " After being disqualified, Varnes said, "There definitely was some contact. I saw an opening and took it. I didn't mean to hit him." ... Editor. Dirt track family The month of July is special to my whole family because the Camel Pro National Half Mile is held in Oklahoma City. This year was to be extra special as my brother Jason, a Pro-Am rider, and I were to ride in a Pro-Am race on the same track as the pros the day after the National. But things just didn't work out as planned. On Friday, the. day before the National, we were in Sapulpa to compete in a dirt track race. I went down during practice and injured my right knee. The EMT personnel said no racing for the rest of the weekend, and doctors later agreed. The only thing that eased my disappointment was what happened in our pit area after my accident. Chris Carr and Davey Durelle came over and spent some time - talking, signing pictures and posing while my mom and dad took pictures. Their encouragement and kindness is an example of wh~t makes the dirt track racing family special. Thanks, guyS, and good luck. . James Thompson Mineral Wells, TX My wife and I attended the Black Hills Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. As always, there was so much to do, including Mount Rushmore, the Badlands.... and Devil's Tower. This year we thought we would tour the much acclaimed Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park to see buffalo and other wild animals. We had ridden just about all the way through the park when I made up these words to the tune of "Home on the Range:" They gave us their word That the buffalo would herd And the hawks and the chipmunks would play. But all that was seen Were some trees and grass green And they charged us six dollars a day. Upon leaving the park, we asked one of the local'residents where would be the best place to observe wildlife. He answered, "Main Street, Sturgis; of course!" Richard FJ. Mack Lombard,IL Disappointed dirt track fan Boy, how my buddy and I had looked forward to riding our motorcycles to Escanaba, Michigan, for their first big race. But it turned out to be one of -the poorest planned and run events we have seen in over 45 years of going to races all over the U.S. I don't know where they got the announcer, but he raved and ranted all afternoon and evening and made an ass of himself. The person in charge of track preparation was not much better and between the two of them they ruined the event. Let's face it, Class Cdirt track racing is in big trouble and any more disasters like this one can only make it worse for great promoters like Tote Gray of Illinois. His events at Peoria Speedway and at Henry are run off without a lot of wasted time and a person really enjoys them.
