eMOTOCROSS AMA National Championship 125/500(( MX Series: Rounds 9/3 Also, the first two turns are really tight. That's good, because it keeps the speeds down, but there was a lot of bumping going on in there on the starts. " Pederson held on for fifth in the mota, which earned him ninth overall. Tichenor struggled home in eighth, but his strong first mota elevated him to fifth overall. . "I've been sick a long time," said Tichenor. "Friday was the first time I fade since Millville. I felt good, but I just ran out of steam in the second mota." CN m Results With two rounds remaining, Jefr'Emig (8) trails Mike LaRocco by 48 points. Larry Brooks (30) and 8 Jeff Matiasevich (9) had a close dice in the second 500cc moto. Jeromy Buehl provided a little excitement as he tried to work his way up from a poor start. While attempting to pass a rider, Buehl got out of shape and shot off the track and into a pond near the finish line. "I was trying to pass a guy when I landed from a jump and my front wheel bounced on a bump," Buehl said. "It got me sideways, and shot me straight into the pond." Buehl fished his bike out and charged gamely on, eventually finishing the moto in 21st position. Several riders were working their way up after suffering poor starts, among them Suzuki rider Larry Ward and DGY Racing's Doug Henry. Having completed the first lap in 10th and lith positions, respectively, the two riders teamed up to make a surge towards the leaders. Within a few laps they were in the· seventh and eighth positions. While LaRocco continued to lead up front, a hattIe developed between Lamson and Tichenor over the fourth and fifth positions. Tichenor moved up on Lamson on lap five, but pressured him for several more laps before he was actually able to get by to take over fourth. "I went into a turn and my back end popped out of a rut," said Lamson. "I got sideways, and that's when Tichenor got me." By this time, LaRocco had built up a substantial lead over Emig. With two laps to go, LaRocco had' almost half a minute on Emig with Kehoe a distant third, and Tichenor in fourth ahead of Lamson. The top five remained the same until the finish, but there was still some jockeying for position behind them.. Ward worked his way up to sixth by mota's end, and was followed in seventh by Henry. "It went a lot better than it has been lately," said Ward. "I got another bad start, but I worked my way up and I felt good. I wauted to pass Lamson and Tichenor, but I ran out of time. I was 14 seconds down and I caught them, which was hard enough. I felt stronger at the end of the race than I did at the start." "I had a good mota," said LaRocco after his win. "Everything just went my way and I didn't even have to ride as hard as I could. I just rode smart throughout the race. That's probably only about my fifth holeshot, so it's' something new for me a,nd I like it. Hopefully I'll get a few more." Mota two started off with an Emig holeshot, but before the completion of . the first lap, the riders were called back to the starting gate. Cooper had gotten crossed up on an uphill double, and had gone down hard in the middle of the pack. Cooper was unable to remove himself from the track, and rather than risk further injury to the downed rider, track officials elected to put out the red-flag, stopping the race. "I got cross-rutted and came off the bike," said Cooper as he lay on the stretcher in pain. "I started to roll over to protect myself, and I think I saw Henry coming right at me. I know my leg is broken." "I think I was one of the guys that hit him," said Henry. "He crashed on the far side of that double, and I didn't see him until I was leaving the ground. Then he rolled over right where I was going to land. I pulled up on the front end to keep from casing it on him, but I think my back tire got him." "It was just one of those things that happens in racing," said Suzuki Team Manager Ray Tethertori. "Everyone that saw it said there was nothing anyone could have done to avoid it." Cooper was transported to the local' hospital, where he was diagnosed as having a broken left femur. On the restart, Kehoe grabbed the holeshot but was soon passed by faststarting Honda privateer Chad Pederson, who had finished 16th in the opening mota. The DGY/Fox/Scottl Arai-backed rider from Fort Dodge, Iowa, had many of the spectators scrambling for their programs as they tried to figure out who the leader was. Botched starts were the norm for mota two, as LaRocco had returned to his old habits and had to work his way through traffic. Henry and Tichenor gated sixth and seventh, respectively. Having gated fourth, Emig soon worked his way back to the front of the pack, dropping Pederson to second.. Then Kehoe dropped Pederson to third, passing the youngster on a downhill. Emig was on the gas in front, trying to get as big an advantage as possible while LaRocco was stuck in traffic. By the fifth lap of the' 15-lap mota, Emig had a six-second lead on Kehoe. LaRocco had worked his way up to fourth when he fell on a back section of the track, and dropped back two positions. He again mounted a charge, passing riders until he was on Pederson's tail. LaRocco passed the fading privateer to take over third on lap nine, then set out after Kehoe. . Henry was on the move, working his way up to fourth by the 10th lap. On the same lap, LaRocco passed Kehoe to move into second, but by that time Emig had a 15-second lead, and 'there were only five laps left. LaRocco gave it everything he had, and did manage to close the gap considerably, but he ran out of time and Emig won the mota and the overall. "I guess all I needed was a good start," said Emig. "Through the whole race I could see him (LaRocco) working up. Sometimes you may be the best rider but may not win. It's happened to me a couple of times. I was mad at myself after the first mota, but my mechanic just told me to concentrate on the turns." LaRocco crossed the line in second, good enough for second overall. "I definitely need to stay off the ground, but I didn't," said LaRocco. "Jeff rode good, though." Henry passed a tiring Kehoe on the penultimate lap to steal third in the mota, but Kehoe's 3-4 score still earned him third overall. "It's been a long time since I've been on the podium," said Kehoe. ''I'm glad to be up here. I've had a hip injury, and it took me a long time to get back up to speed, but I felt good." "I got bad starts and had to work my way up," said Henry, who earned fourth overall. "The gate was kind of weird, and the track was one-lined. 125 MOTO 1: I. Mike LaRocco (Kaw); 2.
