ducked under the pileup," said Reynard. "I was just kind of sitting there behind the guys on the ground, and everyone went around us, but at least I didn't hit the ground. I took off and went wide-open in the next comer and didn't back off until I had the lead." Just five laps into the race, Reynard possessed a lead of 45 seconds. The week at Loretta Lynn's did not go according to plan for Rand, who is Reynard's main rival. Two big crashes and a couple of bad starts prevented him from getting close to Reynard until the final Modified moto, when the two banged around a bit before Reynard fell on his own and then flicked on the safety mode to assure his second title. "He's a great rider, probably a little faster than me, so I'm just doing the best I can," admitted Rand after his two runner-up rides in Stock and Modified racing. "Beating hiIn in the last race feels good; I just wish I would have done it earlier in the week. I guess III have to go by that until the next time we meet." While Reynard and Rand's dueling received the lion's share of notice at Loretta Lynn's, several other up-andcomers emerged from the talented schoolboy divisions. Cernics Racingbacked Joshua Sweat finished a suprising second in the first Stock moto on his way to third overall ahead of Massachusetts' Gerald Lashway and Maine's T. Ryan Kaichen, a pair of fast New Englanders. Florida's Kenny Yoho and Anthony Pocorobba both posted high scores in the Modified class, though it was Ohio's Tommy Collier who earned third overall honors by virtue of his 3-3-5 efforts. New York's Benjamin Trask looked like a sure winner in the Open BIC class before falling off in the early going of the third moto. Pennsylvania's Shannon Rhoades jumped at the chance to ride into the winner's circle, and won the moto and the title in a dramatic final race. Trask had pair of first-place finishes to his credit after two races, but lost control of his big Honda in The 10 Commandments, a difficult whoop section on the Loretta Lynn infield. Rhoades quickly took over the title hunt and earned the championship with a 53-1 score. Ohio's Matt Kelley edged Trask for second with a 8-2-3 card to Trask's 1-1-11. Team Green's Kevin Foley captured his third Plus-25 title in four years with a 1-2-1 score in three heats. Foley outpaced longtime Florida rival Alan Andreu in the first race but suffered through an early fall in race two while defending class ·champion Tommy Martin beat a path to the checkered flag. Martin, fourth in the opening heat, had an outside shot at the title going into the last race, but he threw his bike off the side of the big infield tabletop at the start and fought gamely back up from last place to the 11th position. Still, Foley regained his title while Michigan's John Grewe scored second overall with a 3-3-2 score. Andreu placed third with a 2-4-5 moto tally. Andreu, a 31-year-old Honda rider from Jacksonville, successfully defended his Vet A (+30) title with a solid 1-1-2 ride. Andreau was challenged throughout the week by Michigan's Kip Bigelow, Maryland's Tim Schmelyun, New Hampshire's Don Grahn, and Indiana's Connie Feist. Bigelow posted the best numbers of that crew with a 32-3 for second overall. A new class that was added to the program this year was the Vet B (+30) category. Georgia's Michael Henderson captured the title with a 2-2-2 showing. Florida's John Lundy (1-3-3) and Mississippi's Danny Akins (7-1-1) rounded out the top three. Two big upsets took place in Senior Pre-race favorite Cynthia Cole (2) won two motos in the Women's class, but finished 25th in the second round after crashing and having trouble restarting her bike.. Despite a couple of poor starts, Kevin Windham (ll) won the 85cc Stock and Modified (14-15) classes. Matt Maximoff (4) finished second overall in the Stock division. Robbie Reynard won the 125cc Stock and Modified (12-15) class titles. (+40) and Women's racing. South Carolina's Steve Lewis saw his threeyear winning streak go down in flames when he crashed on the same set of jumps as Open BIC leader Ben Trask. Like Trask, Lewis was a similar 1-1 going into the final heat, and the fall cost him a fourth-straight title. Bruce Dengler - "the hardest working man in motocross" according to his fellow New Jersey riders - scooped up the title with a 2-2-1 tally. Longtime Loretta Lynn's contender Gary Peak finished second overall on a· Yamaha, with Indiana's Alan Bowman third. Lewis finished 14th overall with a 1-1-42 scorecard. The Women's class title, vacated by retired five-time champion Mercedes Gonzalez, was all but handed to '91 runner-up Cynthia Cole before this year's finals. But Cole, an extremely fast 17-year-old Suzuki rider from Massachusetts, suffered one bad moto in Tennessee when she could not restart her bike after a crash. Her 1-25-1 score was only sufficient for eighth overall honors. The class winner was Australia's Tiffany Greenwood, who became the first-ever non-AmeriGan to win a class at the AMA Amateur National Championships. Greenwood finished 2-1-2 to secure Australia's debut title. Kristy Shealy of Texas finished second overall with a 4-4-4 tally while Minnesota's Shelly Kann ran third with a 5-5-5 score. Two other U.S. favorites who failed to hold off Greenwood were Texan racer Dee Wood, who competed at Loretta Lynn's despite nursing a broken clutch finger, and Florida's Kimberly Sybert, who ran 3-3 in the' first two races but was an unexplained no-show for the final moto. No upsets took place in the 8Se (1415) Stock and Modified classes, as Louisiana's Kevin Windham lived up to expectations with six straight race wins. Windham, a mini titlist in both 1990 and '91, took on everything his talented competition had to offer before pulling away with each win. Michigan's Matt Maximoff and Georgia's Richie Horton were the fastest of Windham's pursuers, though neither was able to get a wheel up on the Kawasaki pilot at the checkered flag. For the week, Maximoff ran second in three motos, while Horton followed Windham twice. Robbie Skaggs, from Lawrence, Kansas and Brad Woolsey, from Burleson, Texas, also spent most of their time in Tennessee near the front of the pack. While Jason Mathews starred in the 250cc C classes all week long, Mississippi's Scotty Hubbard and Oklahoma's Allen Crick earned notice as class runner-ups in the Modified and Stock categories, respectively. The top 125cc C Stock-elass rider was Washington's Cory Bauder, while Oregon's Eric Graves won the Modified race. In both 125cc C divisions Barstow, California's Greg Yearsley won the third mo.to and finished second overall. One other class ad·ded to the 1992 Loretta Lynn's program was the International division, a category set aside for foreign entries who cannot make it to America for the area and regional qualifiers. Also included were a half-dozen non-qualifiers from the U.s. The winner of this event was yet another Australian, Craig Anderson, and his country earned the team title via first-, sixth- and seventh-place finishes. R.c. Bennett finished ~ond overall as a representative of Mexico, but Canada finished second in the team tally via third-, eighth-, ninth-, and eleventh-place overall scores. The U.S. team rounded out the top three with high finishes of fourth, fifth and tenth place. Other countries represented in this inaugural event included Ireland, Bermuda, South Africa and Uruguay.
