~ ROAD RACE World Championship Road Race Series: Round I! ~ pionship, assuming Reggiani didn't make it up to the lead, something he wasn't likely to do since he didn't dispatch with Biaggi quickly enough. At the halfway point of the 28-lap race it was Chili with nearly four seconds on Reggiani, Biaggi shadowing him in third, with Romboni and Cadalora within striking distance. Further back, Mitsui Yamaha's Jochen Schmid was in front of fellow German Helmut Bradl on.the HB Honda. The order in the top five didn't change until the 22nd lap, with Cadalora moving in fron t of Romboni, but it was on the 23rd that the. race would change more dramatically. Biaggi, who'd been finding false neutrals in his gearbox all day, hit one as he was braking for the esses. When he let out the clutch, he was in a gear too low, the engine accelerated and spun him out. That gave Reggiani a clear second place, a late charge closing the margin to 1.881 seconds, not enough to deny Chili his third win of the year. "I got a good start, but then Loris looked like he might get away," Chili said. "I was in a hurry to make sure he couldn't make a break so I got by Doriano and Biaggi, and then Loris made a' mistake. Once I'd got a few seconds lead on him I just worked at keeping it that way." Romboni moved past Cadalora into third with four laps to go, crossing the line about 13 seconds behind Reggiani, but less than two-tenths in front of Cadalora, the 250cc World Champion content with fourth, a spot that ensured him his second title. "For me it's the first time with a factory machine racing with PierFrancesco, Reggiani, and Biaggi, and my first time at the front," Romboni said. ''I'm very, very happy with this place." Schmid was in Cadalora's wake in fifth, bemoaning his lack of power as the lone Yamaha works rider and the superiority of the Aprilias. "It just seems impossible to beat the Aprilias at the moment," he said. "In the final phase of the race I was able to outbrake Cadalora twice, but Luca had the advantage on acceleration which is why he was able td get to the finish line in front of me." Bradl was just back in sixth, 'Capirossi seventh on his first outing on the works NSR Honda, with Carlos Cardus eighth on the Repsol Honda. (;1' I Max Biaggi (29), Loris Reggiani (13) and P.F. Chili in the 250cc GP; Chili won. Winner Fausto Gresini takes a look back at Alessandro Gramigni in the 125cc GP. 8 "Once I caught them, it was pretty easy in the beginning. I thought I had a good chance then to win," Gardner said after winning his 18th career GP. "I got into the lead and saw if I could make a break ·and I couldn't. Kevin came by and once he got in the lead he slowed the pace down. I overtook him and I was fairly confident. And I went from there. About mid-race, I thought I could do it." Garriga was third, five seconds behind Rainey and especially happy since he'd been battling a flu. "My only thought today was to finish the race," the 29-year-old Spaniard said. "I've had a fever all weekend. With a result like that I hope I'm ill for the rest of the year." . Fourth went to Lawson, slowed toward the end by a deteriorating rear tire, but comfortably in front of Goddard who was racingmostl)1 alone. . "I was just running around. It was lonely," the Australian, who was making his first start since breaking his wrist at Assen in June, said. "Randy (Mamola); I was chasing him, Doug (Chandler); I was chasing him, then it was just me." Top Brit honors went to Rymer, the 25-year-old from Kent getting the last minute ride on the Padgetts Harris Yamaha of injured fellow Brit Simon Buckmaster. Fifteen minutes before free practice started on Friday morning Buckmaster decided he couldn't ride, his right forearm still in a cast, so some hasty fairing changing was done and Rymer was in. "I just can't say how pleased I am," Rymer said. "Schwanu really helped me. I think if he hadn't been there waving the oil flag I would've gone down too." Yamaha Motor France/Banco's Miguel Duhamel finished seventh for the second race in a row fighting an ill-handling machine all the way. 250cc GP Max Biaggi got the jump on the field, leading an Italian procession of the first six places, the Aprilias the fastest of the bunch. The sextet became a quartet after a few laps, Biaggia leading Reggiani, Chili, and Romboni making the most of his first ride 9n a factory Honda. Chili made his move on the fifth lap, first past Reggiani into second after Reggiani nearly came off and briefly dropping him back to fourth, then into the lead passing Biaggi in the double right Coppice Corners at the far end of the course. Once in the lead, th~ 28-year-old Chili began to pull away, with a threerider dice taking place behind him involving Romboni, Biaggi and Reggiani. Cadalora was fifth, a position that would give him the World Cham- Results 12See QUALIFYING: 1. Bruno Casanova (1:42.344); 2. Kazuto Sakata (1:42.385); 3. Alessandro Gramigni (1:42.521); 4.
