Warner OCALA, FL, JULY 26 A turnout of 125 riders raced in the 18th round of the Florida Motocross Club Series, held at the Florida Motosports Complex, where James McLellen topped the 250cc class. When the field rounded the first turn of the opening moto, Jack Addison rocketed into the lead with James Muglia, McLellen, Greg Boyle and Brett Singer following. Addison opened up a five-second lead on the first lap as McLellan and Boyle shot by Mugia. Singer then felt the pressure from Ed Butler as McLeIJen and Boyle closed in on Addison, but time ran out and Addison claimed the first-moto victory over McLellan, Boyle, Muglia and Butler. McLelland jumped out to the early lead in the second moto with Butler, Muglia, Boyle and Addison behind. McLellan pulled away, while Addison worked his way by Muglia and Boyle in the whoop section. A lap later Addison motored by Butler, while Muglia crashed, moving Terry Enyart into fifth. Addison scored the win ahead of McLellan and Boyle, but was later penalized two places for cutting the track, handing the win to McLellan. LIGONIER, IN, JULY 19 Eric Muffley came out o[ semi-retirement with a bang by [inishitlg first overall at the firstever Riders M.C. Grand Prix. Although the total number o[ riders competing was well below the club's expectations, Muffley had to beat some real contenders, including 1990 ISDE silver medal winner Brian Walker. The 3.5-mile course was anything but typical of the Goshen-based club's normal hare scramble course, or most motocross tracks. Club members and friends spent several weekends widening and trimming brush along the woods trails to make motocross riders feel at home. They also buill jumps on the mostly-grass, natural terrain MX track. Neal Petit got the holeshot in the first deadengine starl wave which included the fastest classes - Lightweight A, Heavyweight A, and Veteran. He held off a tight pack of hungry racers, but by the second time through the scoring barrels, Petit's momentum had faded and he handed the lead to Muffley. Lake City Honda-KawasakilTorco Oil-backed MuHley showed consistency by keeping his nearvintage CR250 about a minute ahead o[ the nearest challenger for the remaining nine laps of the 9O-minute plus one lap race. In the Veteran class, Petit gave the first position to Reider on lap two and picked up a flat tire on the third circuit, dropping him back to fourth in class. Reider went on to dominate the rest of the "30-somethings" with Petit out of the way. Results O/A: 1. Eric Mulney. P/W: 1. Tyler Lock (Yam); 2. Brandon Milia (Hon). MINI: 1. Ward 30 MENDOTA,IL, JULY 18 Jeromy Bardoner won the 125cc B class at the Interstate Golden Cup Challenge, which was held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. As the pack started the first moto, T.). Timmerman and BUrl Lavens went down in the first corner. Both riders remounted and took off alter leader Bardoner, but with 17 riders ahead o[ them Timmerman and Lavens ran out o[ time, and ended up fifth and sixth, respectively. Bardoner ran away [rom the field, while Joey Mackey and Pete Curran had a close battle [or the second and third positions. The 250cc Pro class saw Junior Jackson and Breck Powers do battle. Jackson didn't have much trouble after he got by the hard-riding Powers. With Powes in the lead on lap three, Jackson used a block/stuff move on the stepdown double to get by. With the crowd on their feet Jackson proceeded to leave the pack and score the win. One of the best liked classes o[ the evening was in the 125cc Pro class. Jim Randa and Jack Lee were set to go at it with Rusty Ott and Tim Damron getting in the race with ideas of their own. Randa had the holeshot with Lee close behind, while Damron and Ott were having their own battle [or third. By Kyle Myers Results P/W: I. Chaz Norrhet (Yam); 2. justin Holstein (Yam); 3. Pauley pounds Mid-State Championship By Mike Vancil TRES PANOS, CA, JULY 25·26 Lonnie Pauley won two titles by keeping constant pressure on his competition for both , days of the two-day Mid-State Championship event hosted by R&D Enterprises. It was the event's 11th anniversary, and Pauley celebrated by winning both the 500cc and Open Expen classes. Pauley's Honda ran strong and handled perfectly on both' the flat track and the scrambles course. In the two days of competition, Pauley won three out of four heat races and three out of four main events. He was the clear winner in the Open Experl class but in the 500cc Experl division he was tied on points with Perry Lang. The tie was broken in Pauley's favor by the heat race results. In the 500cc Expen scrambles on Sunday, Lang was not to be denied and put his wheel in front of the pack early. Although he was pressed hard for the entire distance, he never relinquished his lead. Pauley was second in this event and Steve Raymond was third. Lan~'s win was the victory that earned him a tie In the two-day overall points. To determine the Mid-State Champion, the heat races results were consulted; a Saturday spill for Lang in the heat race of the flat track race cost him the title. The Pee Wee 50cc competition was easily .topped by runaway champion Anthony Houser on his Yamaha. Houser won every race. be was in during the two days and had sbfl cotnPftition in the scrambles portion. He led. on lap one as the pack entered the infield portion of the course but somehow fell off. An alerl corner worker yanked the motorcycle out of harm's way and the race-ready Houser was back.in the saddle and on the gas in the blink of an eye. He went from last at the end of lap one to first at the end of lap two, and kept the lead to the checkers for the championship. Another double Mid-State Champion was crowned when Cecil Shon Jr. won titles in the 250 and 500cc Novice classes. The hot Suzuki rider made but a single tactical error and outran all comers. Short won two out of four heat races and three out of four main events. His lone mistake came in the Saturday flat track heat race in the 500cc class. He lost concentration and slid off the course in turn three. From that point, everything turned rosey and Shon took home two tall championship trophies. Results FLAT TRACK P/W 50: I. Nelson wins Bounty Hunter Motocross thriller By Tom Prichard LOS BANOS, CA, JULY 25 Todd Nelson finally succeeded in doing what no other rider has been able to do this season, he won two Bounty Hunterraces back to back. Winning last weekend's event gave Nelson the momentum he's been looking for all season, and tonight's win propelled him into second place in the series point standings. Nelson is within a win of taking the series point lead, and he is determined to take the number one place for 1992. The qualifying motos for the Pro riders started off with Nelson winning the 250cc Pro class over the current number-one plate holder, Pat Bennett. In the first I25cc Pro moto Bennett held off the charges of another title contender, Dan Paladino. The second 250cc moLO was the most exciting of the night, with several riders bunched close together going for the win. With two laps to go, Bennett made a daring move trying to pass Nelson in midair. The pass attempt failed as Bennett's front wheel clipped the rear of Nelson's and the title holder went down hard. Bennett was on the ground for about 10 minutes as ambulance attendants worked on him. Eventually Bennett made it to his feet. Helped back to his pits by his mechanic, it appeared as if Bennett was finished for the night. However, less than a half an hour later he was back on the line in the final l25cc qualifier. Not only did Bennett ride the final qualifier, he also won. When the flag fell for the start of the feature Glenn Harrison put his Honda out in front for the first two laps. On lap two, a massive pile-up in the midsection double jumps took out a large number of riders, including Bennett. Most of the riders were able to continue but the first three riders were quickly pulling away. . On lap three Jon Nelson, Todd's older brother, stole the lead from Harrison, with Todd close behind. Dan Paladino got caught up in the pile-up and was back in eighth. Paladino eventually finished sixth. By the fifth lap Todd Nelson had moved into second behind Jon and started to slowly reel in his brother. By lap eight they were separated by less than a bike lengtl), with Todd trying to put a wheel in every corner. Just put the halfway point Todd outjumped tOs brother and took the lead. For the next few laps Nelson tried to pull away. Pat Bennett and Rusty Holland had emerged from the earlier pile-up tied together, and the duo flew around the course. By the halfway point they had moved into third and fourth. By lap 15 they had caught the older Nelson. Nelson was able to hold them off for the next two laps before spinning out in a tight righthand corner and turning over second place to Holland. HolJand had matched Bennett in every attempt to pass and it looked as if he would be able to hold off Bennett. But on the final lap, Bennell made his move, and passed Holland. The two Suzuki riders had a drag race to the finish, with Bennett holding on for second. Todd Nelson rode the last lap cautiously. When the checkered flag waved Nelson's lead had vanished and Bennett and Holland were less than one bike length behind. Finishing fourth was Jon Nelson who had managed to get up in time to hold off the charges of Suzuki rider Robbie Baker who took fifth. Results BOUNTY HUNTER RACE: I. Todd Nelson (Sur); 2. Gresham grabs Lodi ST win By Mindyz Mac LODI, CA, JULY 25 Mike Gresham raced his Bob Codd-sponsored Yamaha to an easy victory in the Pro-Am main at Lodi's Saturday night shon track races. Gresham nabbed the lead right [rom the green light and never looked back. The race for second behind Gresham, was between Matt Wait and Bryan McDowell. McDowell pressured Wait the whole way, but couldn't get by until the white flag lap when he pulled off a smooth pass going into turn one. Finishing in fourth, right behind Wait, was Mark Key. In Open A action, it was McDowell, leading the pack to turn one and exiting turn two in the lead, with Matt Wait, Mike Gresham, Mark Key and Richard Facciano in tow. Danny McDonnell made an outside pass, coming out of turn four, and stole the fifth spot away from Facciano. As McDowelJ and Wait pulled away, Gresham and Key diced for thud, with Gresham riding hard enough to cross the finish line just ahead of Key. McDonnelJ finished in fifth with Facciano right behind. In the 250cc AlB class, it was Eric Bostrom getting the holeshot with James Pitchford and Earnie Martin battling for second. Martin made a pass coming out of turn two early
