I . ver 100 riders returned to the Peoria ~'c. clubgrounds for the conclusIOn of the AMA Amateur and Youth Dirt Track Nationals, and it was the Schnabel Electric team of Scott and Glen Schnabel that came away the big winners. Rain in early July caused the final TT portion of the Nationals to be delayed, and the amateurs tackled the track the day before the stars of the Camel Pro circuit. After cleaning house at the opening portion of the Nationals, the Hayden family suffered a string of bad luck and didn't fair nearly as well. Tommy Hayden was involved in a multi-bike accident .in the first practice session and suffered a broken arm, wrist and elbow, while his little brother, Nicky, fell in the 250cc Modified National while running second and dropped to eighth. . After Hayden's demise, the 250cc Modified final was a runaway for Glen Schnabel. Hayden pressured Schnabel early in the race, but went down in O 24 the chicane and left Scott Shinn in second. Shinn held a solid second over Steve Hall, but was never able to challenge Schnabel. Glen Schnabel returned in the 250cc DTX class and scored yet another easy win. Schnabel easily outdistanced a race-long battle between J aramia Becker and Super Senior rider John Flesher. At the finish, it was Schanbel well ahead of Becker and Flesher. Not to be outdone, Scott Schnabel led the 400cc class from the flash of the green light to the wave of the checkered flag. Scott Freber gave chase to Schnabel in the initial laps, but eventually fell off the pace. Freber did, however, hold on to second at the finish line ahead of Lee Johnson which was good enough to secure the class championship. Like his brother, Scott Schnabel returned to earn a second win, this one in the 200cc Modified class. Schnabel defeated Dennis Williams, who until· that point, had won every event in the 200cc Modified class. Williams finished a comfortable second, well ahead- of Terry Adams and John Lambrick. Robert Russell holeshot the Super Senior final but was quickly gobbled up by John Flesher. Flesher began to open a lead until a hard-charging Bill Snyder passed Russell and began to close the gap. Flesher and Snyder proceeded to wage war over the lead, and at the finish it was Snyder who held the upper hand. Ray Smith also worked past Russell to finish in the third spot. ' Dennis Williams kept his record in the Vintage class perfect by running away from Les Eslinger and Ron Schettl. Williams' good fortune continued when his name was drawn as the winner of the Circle Bell contingency award of $500 and five dozen Tshirts. Controversy arose in the Open class final, as points leader Paul Morgan was not allowed to compete aboard his DTX Honda CR500 because it was undersized. With points leader Morgan and Tommy Hayden on the sidelines, the door was left wide open for Dave Kolenda and Paul Kops. The two riders staged a tremendous battle for the lead, and at the finish it was Kolenda who crossed the finish line first. Kops' second place finish,· though, was good enough to earn the class championship. The 500cc DTX class featured a racelong battle between Tim May and Mark Burkholder. May pulled free for the win at the checkered, but Burkholder was crowned the class champion with more consistent finishes at the first part of the Nationals. Mike Caves led'Burkholder, May and Kenny Clary around the track in the Over 30 class. Caves held on to the lead to the finish, while the rest of the pack argued over second: May moved into second when Burkholder began to fade and Clary fell off. Kolenda suffered a poor start, but raged into third at the finish to edge Caves for the class championship. May returned in the 500cc Modified class and ran away from the field. Paul Morgan and Reed Bertolino battled over second, and were joined by Burkholder at the halfway point. Burkholder dashed into second on the last lap and edged Morgan and Bertolino at the line. Burkholder's pass was damaging to MoIt'an, as his thirdplace finish left him in a championship tie with the injured Tommy Hayden. Hayden was declared the champion since he had acquired more wins at the previous races. CN Results S/SR: I. Bill Snyder (Hon); 2. John Flesher (Yam); 3. Ray Smith (Kaw); 4. Roben Russell (Hon); 5.
