~ NEW BIKES ·1993 Harley.Davidsons T ~ he Harley-Davidson Motor Company will celebrate its 90th anni. versary next year and to honor the occasion the Milwaukee-based firm announced at a July 14 press conference in Monrovia, California, that three new models, and six special limited edition 90th Anniversary variations of existing models will "' highlight its '93 lineup. ~ With the exception of the 883 and .-.J 1200cc Sportster models, the entire rn Harley/-Davidson lineup features I340cc V-Twin Evolution motors. The bJ) Sportster '883 features an 883cc V-Twin Evolution motor, while the Sportster 1200 boasts a larger, 1200cc version. The three new models, actually revised versions of already existing models, are headed by the FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide, a motorcycle built around a revised Dyna-Glide chassis. As first offered with the 1991 Sturgis, the Dyna-Glide features an internal steel frame with a single backbone that uses a two-point, rubber engineisolation mounting system. For '93, the frame received new directionally controlled engine mounts made with a new mount compound and support plates. The new mounts are claimed to give a smoother ride with better vibration control. ::s ::s < The 90th Anniversary Edition Dyna Wide Glide features a serialized nameplate, cloisonne fuel tank emblems, and a two-tone silver and charcoal satin-brite paint scheme. The standard Dyna Wide Glide is available in two-tone red or two-tone aqua and silver: > Dyna Wide Glide highlights '93 Harley-Davidson lineup 22 Along with the updated frame, the Dyna Wide Glide features Factory Ape , Hangers handlebars and a sculpted bobtail rear fender. The taillight is tucked into the rear fender and is accented with air foil directionals. A wide front fork, 21-inch-Iaced front wheel and a new, one-piece Fat Bob fuel tank round out the package.·Both Factory Ape Hangers and Fat Bob are Harley trademark items. Another new variation in the DynaGlide line is the FXDL Dyna Low Rider, which combines the look of the original, rigid-mount Low Rider and the 'lUbber-isolated ride of the new frame design. The Dyna Low Rider features a two-piece seat with removable passenger pillion. Dual front disc brakes are featured on the Low Rider, as is a black and chrome power train. Custom details include a chrome headlight shell, fender supports and battery cover. ,Missing from the Dyna Glide line are the Dyna Glide Custom and last year's special edition Daytona model. The Heritage Softail Nostalgia, the third new model, was introduced earlier in the year at Cycle Week in Daytona Beach, Florida. It features natural cowhide inserts on the seat and saddlebags and a matching, black-andwhite paint scheme. For the first time, wide whitewall tires have been approved by Harley-Davidson's engineering department and come stock on the machine. The tires, manufactured by Dunlop, are mounted on laced wheels. Chrome and fired-enamel cloisonne fuel tank emblems add the finishing touches. The Heritage Nostalgia is a limited edition motorcycle and only 2700 will be manufactured. The six 90th Anniversary models feature serialized nameplates, "jeweled" cloisonne fuel tank emblems, and a two-tone silver and charcoal satin-brite paint scheme. The six models offered in Anniversary edition trim are the XLH Sportster 1200 (limited edition of 1993 units), FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide (1993 units), FXLR Low Rider Custom (800 units), FLHTCElectra Glide Classic reunion is headed by a 90th Anniversary Reunion Ride made up of 10 different routes that will funnel into Milwaukee on June 12, 1993. Starting points for the ride include two in California - Los Angeles and San Francisco; as well as in Washington, D.C.; Orlando, Florida; Augusta, Maine; Kittyhawk, North Carolina; and San Antonio, Texas. Three routes will start in Canada - Edmonton, Montreal and Vancouver. Upon arrival in Milwaukee, ride participants will enjoy a day-long Reunion at the Mayor Meier Festival (Above) The Heritage Softail Nostal, gia features cowhide inserts in the seats and saddlebags, factory-approved white-wall tires, and black and white paint. (1340 units), FLHTC Electra Glide Ultra Classic (1340 units), and the FLTC Tour Glide Ultra Classic (200 units). A number of improvements have made their way into the entire '93 line. The latest versions of the XLH Sportster 883 and XLH Sportster Hugger join the rest of the Harley lineup and feature belt, rather than chain drive. In '93, the FXSTS Springer Softail utilizes a floating front fender system which eliminates the gap between the front fender and tire. The fender moves with the motion of the tire, a la 'traditional low-mount front fenders, via a pair of dog-bone links. The FL touring line received the most improvements. A new, integrated automotive-style oil pan is relocated below the engine and is claimed to provide a lower center of gravity and make for easier oil changes.. The battery is now located under .the driver's seat in the center of the motorcycle's chassis, rather than in the saddlebags. With the relocation of the battery, the saddlebags are roomier and The Dyna Low rider features a two-piece seat and dual front disc brakes. The power train, headlight shell, fender supports and battery cover are chrome. now come with permanently attached lids with an over-center latch and nylon tether that swings open to the side. Finally, all models have new, low profile clutch and brake levers that are closer to the grip. Suggested retail prices for the '93 line have yet to be established. Availablilty also remains unknown, as the factory is still producing '92 models. In addition to the new models, a 90th Anniversary Reunion in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will highlight the company's birthday celebrations. The Park that will feature food, entertainment and numerous motorcycle displays. Other Reunion activities include a Harley Owners Group threeday rally, which will be held at Wisconsin's State Fair Park, June 911. All proceeds from the ride and other . reunion activities will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Now in its 11 th year as a corporate sponsor, Harley-Davidson has generated nearly 11 million dollars for the MDA through fundraising events and corporate activities. m
