Other changes include 6mm (measured from front to back) wider footpegs, a new lower-maintenance and smoother-operating throttle assembly, a different "Eric Crippa" handlebar bend, thicker seat cover material and higher density seat foam, and a new fuel cap baffle system, designed to reduce vent tube spillage while riding. The CRl25R will be available by September 1, and carry a suggested retail price tag of $3799. Many of the changes to the CRl25R have been incorporated into the CR250R. "Again, like the CRI25R, our main goals with the CR250R were to improve straight-line handling characteristics, improve power delivery, make it easier to ride, and increase durability over the '92 version," Hoshi said. While the CR250 shares basically the same design changes as the CR125, there are a few notable updates that were made strictly to the 250. For one, the clutch housing has more lubricating holes. "We had some clutch failures reported last year ('92), and we ,found out that the clutch wasn't getting enough lubrication.' So we increased the oil capacity and added more holes behind the clutch basket in the engine case," Hoshi said. Another inherent problem with the . CR250R has been spark plug fouling. "This shouldn't be a problem anyinore," Hoshi said. "We've gone to a new ignition that provides a hotter (up from 100 to 200 milli-amps) spark." Chassis-wise, unlike the CRl25R which uses a Kayaba shock, the CR250R, as well as the CR500, comes fitted with a Showa unit. It too has a 2mril larger diameter shaft and different valving. The CR250R will hit the showroom floors a month later than the CRl25R October 1, and will have a suggested retail price of $4349. "Our main goal with the CR500R was to increase its versatility and rideability," said Hoshi. In order to make the CR500R more "versatile" it now has wider fourthand fifth-gear ratios. "It's not by any means a wide-ratio transmission," Hoshi said. "These are the same gear ratios we used on the 1985-'87 CR500s. A lot of people complained when we switched to the tighter ratios, feeling they had to shift too much. The new ratios make the 500 much easier to ride. " All of the other changes are similar to those carried out on the CRl25 and 250, such as a modified fork, revised rear shock (although the shaft diameter was not increased), higher density seat I foam, new throttle assembly and fuel cap. The CR500R will be released at the same time as the 125, by September 1, with a suggested retail price that is the same as that of the CR250 - $4349. Although, the CR80R wasn't available for viewing, Hoshi said, "It (the CR80R) is unchanged from last year, except for graphics, and the fact that the sidestand has been replaced with a removable triangle-stand. We feel the CR80 is still the best in the class, especially the motor." The CR80R's suggested retail price is $2449 and it will be available August 1. Looking into the future, Hoshi said, "We (Honda) plan on producing CR motorcyles for a long time to come and to continue offering the finest, most competitive motocross machines available. As for as the future in technology, we are experimenting with some radical new designs in Japan, but I can't say anything about that now. But we will have some surprises."
