LOOKING BACK
Rick "Too Hipp" Johnson was pictured on the cover of Cycle News
40 years ago. Mark Kariya sat down and interviewed the up-and-
coming Yamaha factory motocross racer... We also had an interview with
motocrosser David Bailey, another hot young prospect... Husqvarna's
Dan Ashcraft won the King of the Desert race... Scott Parker led from
start to finish at the Ascot National Half-Mile... Mark Barnett won the
Kansas City Supercross at Arrowhead Stadium... Mike Melton won the
Rattlesnake National Enduro in California.

We focused, once again, on the looming helmet bill 50 years ago... Jimmy
Weinert (70) and Gary Jones (73) were pictured on the cover from the
Snake River Motocross. Weinert went on to win the 250cc Expert class and
Jones topped the 500cc class... We tested the Triumph Bonneville T120R.
We said it was an "outstanding around-town middleweight, café cruiser and
mountain-road racer."... Mark Brelsford won the Ascot TT National... We
had a feature on famed motorcycle publisher Joe Parkhurst.
(Above L-R) Ralph White, Mark Brelsford,
Mert Lawwill and Kel Carruthers were all
smiles at the Ascot TT National 50 years
ago. (Right) Jeremy Albrecht (left) and
James Stewart share a laugh after winning
the 125cc West Supercross main in Salt
Lake City 20 years ago.
