·~ DI~TRACK~A~dN~oo~~~~m~_~_~_cl_h_oS_m_'~_:R_oo_~_9~~~~~~_ ~ Carr earned $5000 for his win in the $10,000 Camel Challenge. Pegram (72), Rogers (57), Terry ~oovey (18), Morehead (42), Carr (20) and Dan Ingram (31) competed in the Camel Challenge. 14 While Morehead and Roeder duked it out, Rogers was the man on the move. Though he was seventh in line at the restart, Rogers lost ground and completed the first lap 10th. Rather than ride the inside groove like his competitors, Rogers steered his Harley high on the race track and into the loose dirt. "I saw Ricky do it before the restart," said Rogers. "While we were waiting to line up, I went over to Johnny (Goad) and said, 'There's traction up there, isn't there? Should I try it?' and Johnny nodded and said, 'Do it.' " Rogers picked off his competitors two at a time, often sliding past with ease. By lap eight, Rogers had motored into fourth behind Morehead, Roeder and Pegram. Rogers then zapped Pegram through one and two and slid past both Morehead and Roeder in the same spot on lap nine. "I went way up high, and was just passing people," said Rogers. "After I passed Morehead and Roeder I looked up and thought, 'Man, the leaders are over a straightaway ahead.' Then I realized I was leading and got nervous." Nervous or not, Rogers continued to pitch it sideways and began to pull away. Pegram came to life after seeing Rogers' high line, and began to work on Roeder and Morehead by using the high line. "The track had changed so much, I couldn't figure out where to go," said Pegram. "Then I saw Rusty up there, so I tried it too. It took a while 'to get used to." Pegram edged past Morehead, and after quite a bit of resistance, displaced Roeder with an inside line going into turn one. "My rear end was slipping everywhere," said Roeder. "I couldn't . control it." After passing Roeder to take over second, Pegram was faced with a seven bike-length gap between himself and Rogers. With each lap Pegram edged a little closer and with five laps to go, he closed to the rear of Rogers' machine and waited for a mistake that never came. Rogers gassed it even harder and crossed the finish line with i"oom to spare. "When they gave me the five-lapto-go signal I started sweating," said Rogers. "I never count laps, but I did then - they were the longest five laps of my life." "Man, there was a lot of slamming going on out there in the first few laps," said Pegram. "Once I got going I felt real strong. Maybe if I had two more laps... who knows?" Crossing the finish line a distant third was Graham. After the restart, Graham spent the majority of the race in a dogfight over sixth with Parker, Carr and Ingram, some 10 bike-lengths behind the leaders. Graham broke free of that pack just before the five-lap signal and reeled in Morehead and Roeder. Morehead succumbed to Graham's high-line choice on the 21st lap, and held on to finish fifth. Graham continued to charge. Roeder gave in to Graham's attack on the last lap, as he could do little to resist aboard his oil-dripping machine. "My last lap must've been at least a half second faster than all the others," said Graham. "Once guys got out of my way I was able to go fast." "It really sucks that my bike started leaking, but I'm happy about my finish," said fourth-place Roeder. "I wanted to get third, but all in all I'm surprised that I went this well on a clay track." After losing touch with Graham, Parker and Carr continued their fight over sixth. Carr pulled out the stops with two laps to go and dove to the inside of turn one to overtake his teammate. Parker had no answer, and followed Carr home in seventh. "It seemed like it took me 20 laps to get my rhythm going," said Carr. "The first laps were wild, guys would go whizzing by you. Since the track is banked, going into the turns low was like riding downhill. At least I beat Scotty and gained two points - that's a bonus." "For me, I think I had more traction in the final than I did all night," said Parker. "I just wasn't going as fast as everyone else. We were just a tick off, and couldn't gain no ground anywhere." Rounding out the top 10 were Ingram, Davis and Springsteen, while Hale finished a disappointing II tho "I bogged it off the line and blew the first start, and then in the restart i caught that hole and about highsided. There's better days ahead," said 1990 Camel Pro Rookie of the Year Hale. Junior National Kevin Varnes set the pace early in the evening as he blasted to the fastest heat race win over brothers Eric and Doug O'Boyle. Joel Barrow led another set of brothers, Roy and James Hart, across' the finish line in heat two, while Ray Dugan bested Dallas Baer and Tim Selby in the final six-lap heat. Varnes had the fastest clutch hand at the start Of the 12-lap main, and put his Penn State Cycles/Shoei/Cycle Shack/Parents-sponsored Rotax into the lead. With a clear track ahead of him, Varnes began to pull away from the field, while Baer did his best to fend off the advances of Doug O'Boyle. Meanwhile, the Hart brothers steadily plugged through the pack after mediocre starts and moved into fourth and fifth. James Hart was the faster of the siblings, and reeled in and passed O'Boyle and Baer with relative ease. At the finish, Pennsylvanian Varnes enjoyed a 30 bike-length lead over James Hart. Baer held on to a distant third, while O'Boyle slid out and allowed Roy Hart into fourth. "I got a great start and just concentrated on not making any mistakes," said an elated Varnes. "I never saw tN anyone." Results TIME TRIALS: 1. Larry Pegram (24.606); 2. Rusty Rogers (24.66); 3. Terry Poovey (24.704); 4. Dan Ingram (24.706); 5. Chris Carr (24.717); 6.
