pared to the Howard Lees team Buckmaster raced with previously, and time was lost in the pits with tardy stops. With 18 hours down, the Suzuki was a lap in front of Fogarty's Kawasaki, then six laps back on .the leaders came the second Kawasaki. The Mormeretl Bonhuil/Mattioli Yamaha was a further 10 laps adrift on them. But the scrap had raged all night with only nine laps covering fourth to ninth. Just before 11:00 a.m. (20 hours) the fifth placed Mouzin Kawasaki retired to the pits with a blown motor and the Ramon Kawasaki retired with an electrical problem after working back up to fifth place. . With three hours left to run, the leading Kawasaki had a lap on the Suzuki, but lost time when Rymer had to pit for a new gear change, the pedal, which was welded to the linkage, had snapped off! "I tried to carry on with what was left of the lever but I was losing a lot of time," said Rymer. "When we pitted, I think that was when Monieau started to really go for it." That put the Suzuki within 23 seconds of the ZXR, but disaster struck the Suzuki with one and half hours left. Moineau crashed heavily at the flat-in-sixth Blanchimont left-hander. Michel Graziano, following him, said there was a brief glimpse of oil smoke then the Suzuki crashed at high speed. Moineau was taken to the hospital for a precautionary checkup but, miracuously, suffered no serious injuries. The oil claimed one of the backmarker Suzukis and almost caused Fogarty to crash. "I came round the corner flat out to see oil flags everywhere," said Fogarty. "At the same time I hit the oil and lost control and was heading straight for the (incident) car on the track. I thought I was dead then at the last minute I got control of the bike and just steered it away from the car. I was in shock for two laps after that. Really scary!" The incident brought out the pace car until the track was cleared up, but now the race was over with the leading Kawasaki some eight laps up on the team's sister bike of Hislop. They in turn had 14 laps on the third place Yamaha of MonneretiBonhuil/Mattioli which was losing a lot of time each pit stop while the team wired up the silencer car retaining bracket which had fractured. In the final half hour it was simply a case of keeping going and the two Kawasakis crossed the line together, underlining their present dominance of the championship. Kawasaki France will be racing their new 1992 ZXR-7s for the first time at the Suzuka Eight Hour. They will need them. The competition will be much stiffer in Japan to what they faced at Spa.' However, Rymer and Fogarty have such a points advantage after two double points rounds they will still lead the world standings when the teams line up at the Bol - and Suzuki will probably have two bikes there. A classic confrontation at Paul Ricard perhaps?
