Noleen Racing's Larry Brooks holeshot the second moto, just ahead of Kiedrowski. Ward gated third, and passed Kiedrowski to move into second on the first lap. Kiedrowski passed his teammate back on lap two, while Stanton, who had a fourth-place start, also got by Ward. Matiasevich gated fifth, but was passed by Dubach on the second lap. Brooks was riding strong and held the lead until lap three, when Kiearowski got by. Once into the lead, Kiedrowski tried to pull away before Stanton could work through the pack. He was helped when Stanton came up short over an uphill double and went over the bars. Honda Team Manager Dave Arnold said, "Before the second moto, I didn't know whether or not I should tell Jeff (Stanton) that if he beat Kiedrowski, he would clinch the championship. I told him, and in hindsight, I think it was a mistake. I could tell he was nervous when he got a bad start and when he crashed. He' already had enough pressure from riding in front of his home crowd." Ward, Dubach and Matiasevich got around Stanton before he remounted in sixth and again began to work through the pack, but Stanton passed Matiasevich on lap five and Dubach soon after. Brooks and Ward fought over second, and Ward nabbed the position on lap seven. Stanton caught and passed Brooks on that same lap, and Quickly began to reel in Ward. On lap eight, Stanton muscled his way past Ward for second. But by that time, Kiedrowski had pulled out an eight-second advantage, and though Stanton was slightly faster, he ran out of time and had to settle for second. Kiedrowski was first across the line, followed by Stanton, Ward and Dubach, who had passed Brooks on the eighth lap. 125cc National Emig possessed the Quickest reactions at the drop of the gate at the start of the first 125cc moto and immediately began to pull out a big lead. Team Suzuki's Jeff Dement finished the first lap in second, with teammate Cooper looking for a way around. North County Yamaha's Tyson Vohland was fourth, with Team Peak/Honda rider Buddy Antunez in fifth. As Emig cruised up front, Vohland was on the move, and worked his way up to second by lap four. Antunez passed a struggling Dement to take over fourth', but began to slow and eventually dropped out of the race. . "I almost crashed, which knocked the wind out of me," said Antunez. "I started to get back into it, but I came up short over some doubles and went over the bars. " Vohland ran second until lap eight when he slid out in a turn as he tried to get around Cooper, who held onto second to the finish. After suffering a terrible start, LaRocco worked his way up to third, ahead of Kawasaki's Ryan Hughes. But the moto belonged to Emig, who finished with approximately a lO-second winning margin. Emig again showed the way off the line in moto two and Quickly pulled away from Lusk, who finished seventh in moto one. Hughes started third, but LaRocco got by him on the second lap and set out after Lusk. Cooper was mired in midpack after crashing on the first lap. "I hit neutral in a turn and got bumped while my foot was under the shift lever," said Cooper. "Then I went down again and got up in about last. I was working my way up when I bent my front disc trying to get around Former 125cc ationaL Champion Guy Cooper (5) was sixth overall. Antunez, so I rode the rest of the moto with no front brake." Cooper eventually finished the moto in lIth. LaRocco passed Lusk on the fifth lap and began to reel in Emig. Lap after lap, LaRocco narrowed the margin and then he caught up to Emig with three laps to go, and passed him on lap 12, the next to last lap, when a rock jammed Emig's rear brake and he was forced to single a downhill triple jump. Emig recovered quickly, but LaRocco had a comfortable lead and kept it to the finish, taking the checkered flag approximately six seconds ahead of Emig. Lusk finished a distant third, just edging out Team Suzuki's Brian Swink, who suffered poor starts in both motos. "My mission was to holeshot and win both motos," said Emig, who dedicated his first National win to the late Paul Donnelly, of Shoei Helmets. ''I'm still happy, though. I couldn't believe how good my bike ran. I got my first-ever National moto win here last year, so I like this track." m Jeff Ward (6) passed Larry Brooks (30) in the second moto. Ward was third overall, his best finish so far in an injury.plagued final season of MX racing. Jeff Stanton (right) confers with Honda Team Manager Dave Arnold between motos. Stanton needs only five points at the final round to clinch the series championship. Brooks (30) was the top privateer, finishing sixth overall via 7·5 moto finishes. Results 125 MOTO 1: I.
