~ LOCAL EVENTS ~ Dale Barber (755) beat Jesse Gatlin in the Super Camp final at LACR drags. Winner Todd Winsett (9) and Eric Sassaman went at it at Pine Grove TT. Darin Butler for the class win. Points leader Don Grace capitalized on a bad second loop by rival Paul Schwegler to put his Gas-Gas in the number three position. Beta-mounted Dave Bolen topped the competitive Senior Expert class, while Rich Allman took advantage of a last-section mistake by Larry Garrison to claim second. Tom LaChance and his Kawasaki erased any d).ances of Buzz McCoy's by winning two straight Pro Gas titles. LaChance got a better starting line reaction and won with a 9.25/ 141.85 run. In two semi finals, McCoy defeated Scott Valentine, while LaChance got a bye run. Alfred Barrios chalked up another Super Gas title with his Suzuki, running a 10.14/ 130.56 in the final to defeat Bob Stoykovich. Stoykovich had beaten Tray McGee in the semi finals, while Barrios had used a win over Steve Mitchell to earn a slot in the final. With skies threatening, the first Open class heat rolled to the line. David Menser led for five laps but was obviously holding up a hardcharging Chris Boone. This was Boone's first race of the year and much is expected from him when he gets warmed up. Boone zapped Menser on the last lap for the win. Brian Thomas figured out a way to make a 250cc go faster than a field of 600cc and won the second Open class heat in a walk-away. Rain cancelled the main events, so Boone was declared the winner by virtue of a fast heat, while Thomas was awarded second. Boone tops Paducah Short Track Results Results C'SHIP: I. By Brent Menser PADUCAH, KY, JUNE 19 Chris Boone was the winner in the Open class on an abbreviated event at Paducah Short Track. . A large rider turnout had to deal not only with the competition but with the elements as well. Light rain fell on and off during practice and all riders were advised during the riders' meeting to run the heats like they were the mains. . The only exception was the Open class, which was split into two heats. Josh Knott recorded wire-to-~ire wins in both the 85cc and 200cc classes. He was chased to the checkered flag by Jason Goodwin in both races. The Senior class heat race was a wild affair. Bobby Lewis got the holeshot on the field, followed by David Flowers. Lewis and Flowers had stellar professional careers in the 70's and 80's and are now reviving their talents. Flowers got around Lewis on lap three and held the lead to the checkered flag. Brian Thomas, riding a Suzuki 25Occ, got the holeshot on a field of big-bore four-strokes in the Sportsman class. Thomas was locked up on the cushion and put a lot of distance on the field before it was over. Thomas has a crowd-pleasing style and many riders wondered how he gets his handlebars so close to the ground. 50: I. Shawn Walker (Yam). 85: I. Josh Knott (Suz); 2. Jason Goodwin (Kaw). AM: I. Winsett wonderful at Pine Grove TT By Len Breech PINE GROVE, PA, JUNE 14 Young expert Todd Winsett held off the constant threats of veteran Eric Sassaman to take the 250cc A final on his AI Wenger/Punk 8c Mom/Greiner Industries/WRT/Ergore & Sons-sponsored Honda 'at the Flying Dutchmen M.e. TT Scrambles. Sassaman came back to top a small 600cc A class. Sassaman has the knack of turning it up another notch for the main event, and at the start of the 250cc A final, he had over a three bike length lead coming out of the infield hairpin, but was greeted with a red flag. On the restart, Winsett led the charge out of the hairpin, with Sassaman, Kevin Miller and Jon Simpson following close behind. As he had done in the heat, Winsett took everything Sassaman threw at him and held the lead. From the midway point on, Simpson, Bromley and Ace Phillips battled over fourth, while Miller ran a lonesome third. Afterwards, Sassaman had nothing but praise for Winsett's ride, commenting, 'I showed him a tire several times, but he didn't break. He earned the win." Rider turnout was down considerably, especially in the 600cc A class. Mark Burkholder. gave Sassaman a ~ood battle in the first half of the final givmg the lead up at the end of the first lap. Burkholder retook the lead coming off the fourth turn on the second lap, but Sassaman took the lead for good on the fourth lap with Bill Bromley, Tracy Zechman and Phil Libhart battling over third. Bromley took control in the late laps, while Libhart just nipped Zechman for fourth at the flag. . • Tom Skethway jumped out in front of the 85cc AlB final, while Brody Miller, Jake Johnson, Paul Allison and John Winsett followed. By the end of the second lap, Winsett had taken over second, and moved into the lead on the fourth and final lap, holding off Skethway for the overall win. Results 55 STK: I. Cody Wenger (hj); 2.
