Howe hot at LACR Motoaoss By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, JUNE 19 O'Neal/Riders Choice/Shoei-sponsored Yamaha PW50 rider Scott Howe used a couple of good starts to run away from the pack in both motos to claim the overall win in the Pee Wee A class during the Friday night California Racing Club motocross races, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. Jerry Martinez, Howe and Jason Ci<\llette were three abreast through the first tum in moto one with Martinez getting a slight advantage coming out of tum two. His lead was short-lived as Howe found his way into the lead by the completion of one lap. Once in front, Howe stretched his lead to five seconds by the checkered flag. Martinez was pressuring Ciarlette and almost got by when Ciarlette ran into the back of a lapped rider. Martinez and Ciarlette were side-by-side into the last tum, with Ciarlette scooting across the line inches ahead of Martinez. . Martinez pulled the second moto holeshot but wasn't able to match Howes' pace. By the third lap Howe again had five seconds on the others. Ciarlette ran a lonely second until Martinez caught him with a couple of laps remaining. Howe took the win with a huge lead. Ciarlette and Martinez were neck-andneck the entire last lal? with Martinez making a bonzai last tum inside pass on Ciarlette for . second place and second overall. ResultS P/W A: 1. Donatoni dominates Doublecross GP By Greg Robertson ADELANTO, CA,jUNE 21 Honda/Race Tech-sponsored Dave Donatoni was victorious in the Junior Vet Master class at Doublecross Racing's Father's Day Grand Prix at Sunrise Cy.c1e Park. Gordon Ward jumped out to an immediate lead with Donatoni watching his every move. Ward was slowly pulling away and by the fifth lap was cruising with a seven-second lead. However, 20 minutes into the race, Ward pulled off the track and headed for the pits, handing the lead ot Donatoni. Once in front, Donatoni went uncontested for the win. Brian Miller started out the Junior Vet Novice class leadin~ after the first lap, with Joe Bagnasco, Bnan Platte and Wayne Cummins hot on his tail. Miller and Bagnasco started to pull away from the others. Bagnasco would close on Miller in the technical sections only to have Miller pull away again on the long, whooped-out straights. Midway through the race Bagnasco made a pass that stuck when he cleared a big double jump that Miller singled. Bagnasco won over Miller, follo.wed closely by Cummins. Franklin Ziegler had no time to relax on his way to winning the Mini Beginner class. Ziegler jumped out to an early lead with brother William Ziegler in second and John Nicoll third. Nicoll quickly moved William back to second and set his sights on Franklin. Nicoll was able to close on the leader but could not make the pass. . Leigh Letellier was the overall.winner of the Kansas Motorcycle Sportsman's Association Hare Scrambles at Santa Fe Trail Cycle Park. The tailing mounds of this abandoned coal mine were put to good use by the club for the 60 competitors. The Open Expert class was in the first of six waves. A string of KTMs was led out of the first corner by Letellier, tailed by Terry Gilliland', Dave Jeffery, and Dave Haworth. Bruce Korbelik had bounced off a couple racers and was down in fifth, but better off than Paul Weber, who couldn't light his big CR. Korbelik passed Gilliland on the third lap, then slipped by Letellier until the latter found his rhythm and motored off, quickly putting 30 seconds on the field. The Answer/KTM/Letko Cycles/Scott USA-supported Letellier led all II laps of the two-hour race. Second overall was Jeffery, who took the position on lap six. Korbelik held third despite a late-race crash, followed by Bill Kelly, who won the 250cc class by roosting his Suzuki from a second-row start. Roger LeRette finished fifth, winning the Plus 30 class. Special mention goes. to Paul DiPasquale, who gave up the lead in the FourStroke class to aid an injured rider. He ended up second to a hard-riding Perry Keegan. Results EX: I. Hunt hauls at Glen Helen SX By Dave Burgess SAN BERNARDINO, CA. JUNE 20 Jason Hunt battled back from three hard crashes to storm through the pack, and claim the overall victory in the 125cc Beginner class at the'CMC Saturday night supercross, held at Glen Helen Raceway. The Glen Helen track was prepped to perfection, and the jumps were huge. VilO Valenti had the gate timed perfectly and stormed into the lead at the start of moto one. Tucking in behind Valenti was Hunt and Suzuki-mounted Danny Benitez. Before the first lap was completed, Valenti came up short over a big double jump and blew his rear tire out. This retired him for the night, and gave the lead to Hunt. Hunt didn't hold it long, as he cartwheeled his Kawasaki over a jump. This handed the lead to Benitez, who obviously didn't want it, as he cartwheeled his Suzuki in the whoops. The next rider to inheri t the lead was Darren Gissel, who had been watching all the crashes from fourth. Gissel seemed to be the only rider under control, and he rode smooth and steady. Hunt 'and Benitez were on the move and zipped through traffic with relative ease. Despite crashing twice, Hunt worked his way up and zapped Gissel for the lead. Benitez also, sneaked by Gissel late in the moto. As the checkered flag flew, it was Hunt taking the win over Benitez, Gissel, and Howard Drymon. Hunt nailed the holeshot in moto two and said goodbye. Benitez stayed c1soe for first, ,until he threw it away. Gissel moved into second and held it to the f~sh. Hunt took the checkered flag sideways and earned the overall win with perfect moto finishes. Results 80 BEG: I. Wes Carey (SUl); 2. Michael Rudfelt (Suz). 125 BEG: I. Jason Hunt (Kaw); 2. Boston bums Nebraska MX By Kent Taylor Palmyra, NE,jUNE 28 Mike Boston swept both the 125 and 250cc A classes at the Midwest Motocross Association track_ In the first 125cc moto, Brian Taylor nailed the holeshot while Boston started second and then took the lead in a nasty section of whoops. Boston quickly began pulling away, as Taylor settled into second. Chris Hunter worked his way through the pack, but time ran out before he could draw a bead on Taylor:. In the second moto, Boston was midpack at the start, but by lap three, had snared the .lead. He then pulled away to another easy win. When many of the same riders headed for the first turn in 250cc A action, Boston again found himself trailig the leaders. The veteran took over the top spot on lap two. as he sailed
