~ M OTOCROSS AMA Southeastern Youth Regional Qualifier ~ Kenny Yoho (2) holeshot and won the 125cc (12-15 year-old) Stock class. Matt Henderson (15) overcame mediocre starts to win the 125cc C Stock class. Ricky Carmichael (167) passed Scott Pinson (841) for the 85cc class win. Matt Walker (27) led Jeff Ryan (85) in 65cc action. Walker won the overall. Loretta Lynn's, said, "My first moto was the hardest. Jessie Ballard' was right behind me and passed me when I almost wrecked. But then he wrecked and I got the win." Ballard was third overall behind Walker. AXO/No LimitlTri City Hondabacked Kym Sybert won both motos in the Women's division despite a second moto crash that temporarily set her back to third spot. Maryland's Amber Hughes was second and returned to claim fourth in the maledominated 85cc (12-13) Stock class. Veteran Beth Rewis had to settle for third overall and said, "I wanted to win, but qualifying was the main thing." Matt Henderson topped the 125cc C Stock class with a perfect score after holding off a hard-charging Timothy Bruce late in the final moto. Bruce returned to win the 250cc C Stock class after going by race leader Marty Williams in the final moto. Pocoroba slipped past Yohq for the lead but Yoho stayed on Pocoroba's fender all the way to the flag in the weekend's most exciting match. The win clinched the Modified title for Pocoroba over Yoho. Jason Sybert, Patrick Hizel and Damyn Swanepoel rounded out the top five. Yoho came back to win the 125cc (12-15) Stock class over Pocoroba while Hizel edged James Humphrey for third place gold. The large and hotly contested 51cc class saw Tom's Cycles of Cleveland, Tennessee-backed Chad Hampton emerge victorious with his 2-2-3 score over Chaz Northey who posted a 5-12 tally. Sky Racing/Boyesen/PJ-1I WD-40/Scott-backed James Stewart won the first and third motos but, while leading the second moto, Stewart's bike ran out of gas. Stewart was able to refuel and finish but had to settle for an eventual fifth overall. Barr/PJ-IIPit Stop-backed Matt Walker nailed down a perfect score in the 65cc division while Jessie Ballard and Aaron Lindsey wrestled for runner-up honors. Ballard held the edge in a tied score. Walker returned to contest the '85cc (7-11) Stock class but it was Drug Free . All-Stars/Cycle World of Baltimore/ Shoei-backed Travis Pastrana who came out on top after sharing moto wins with runner-up Walker. Pastrana, who was the only seven-year-old. to compete in,this class last year at Results Yoho, Pocoroba battle at Devils Ridge MX By Gary Crider SANFORD, NC, JUNE 20-21 loridians Kenny Yoho and Anthony Pocoroba clashed in the 125cc 12-15 Stock and Modified divisions and came away with a class win each in the AMA Southeastern Youth Regional Qualifier at Devils Ridge MX. Ricky Carmichael and Richie Horton were the weekend's only double-class winners. Carmkhael won each time out in both the 85cc (9-13) Modified and (12-13) Stock divisions while Horton was perfect in the 85cc (14-15) Stock and Modified classes. The winner of each class took home a new Dunlop tire as part of the "Dunlop Days" promotion and every rider's name was in the hat for a new Suzuki RM80 given away by Honda/ Suzuki of Sanford. Curtis Daniels won the bike. Over 300 entrants, representing 12 states, were on hand for. the event. Each of the 14 Youth, Women and F 38 Amateur C classes were to run three motos, spread out over two days. Sunday's program was cut short, however, when a thunderstorm blasted the track. Severe weather warnings were issued and referee Stanley Tipton cancelled the remaining third motos. Hence, most of the results were based on two motos only. The top seven finishers in each class were guaranteed a starting position in the upcoming AMAiLoretta Lynn's National.. Suzuki of Lake Wells/AXO/ProAction/Oakley-backed Yoho and Honda of West Tampa/Barr's/AXO/Torco/ RRP/No Limit/Renthal-backed Pocoroba were t.he top two finishers in every moto of 125cc (12-15) Stock and Modified racing. Their rivalry was capped off in the final modified moto when Pocoroba stormed back from an eighth place start, surprised race leader Yoho and took the win.
