Buchanan held on for second, ahead of Roeder. R.J. Overholt assumed the early lead in the Pro-Am main before pole-sitter Warner forced his way past. Charles Buchanan and Mike Hacker battled over third, while two of their competitors tangled and went down. On the single-file restart, Warner was at the point, but fell prey to a faststarting Overholt. Warner pulled out the stops and put his Mike Stauffer Motors/New Tech Racing/Jeff Armbruster Paints/Mom and Dadsponsored Rotax into the lead and went on to win. Overholt was forced to settle for second, ahead of Hacker. CN Results Steve Morehead (42) railed past early leader Georgie Price (64U) to win the Norwalk Half Mile Regional. Price finished second. George Roeder II (66) topped the field at the Greenville Half Mile Regional. Norwalk Half Mile laurels to Morehead By Bert Shepard ,'I 6 NORWALK, OH, JUNE 21 have a prediction to make," said Steve Morehead, after topping the 2nd Annual Rock and Race Norwalk Half Mile, sponsored by Roeder Harley-Davidson. "Today's third place finisher, 'Geo' Roeder, will win his first National next week at the Lima Half Mile." Morehead, the elder statesman of Ohio dirt track racing, paid tribute to the bravest of the young lions, George Roeder II. Roeder raced back from dead last to finish thitd in the Expert main behind runner-up Georgie Price. James Hart contin'ued his winning ways in the Junior main event by besting his younger brother, Roy Hart, and Pat Buchanan. Mike Warner scored his first win as a pro, topping the Pro-Am main event. Roeder was the fastest qualifier, circulating the half mile track in 25.454 seconds. Morehead dusted off 01' Paint, his venerable Harley-Davidson XR750, and turned in the secondfastest time of 25.757. Larry Pegram was the only other rider to dip into the 25-second bracket with a 25.790. In the first heat race, Scott Stump ripped off the line aboard his new Rotax and led the field into turn one. Roeder suffered a mid-pack start, but took control of the race by the second lap. "Boy, I'm not sure what's going on. Everything that happens to my brother Jess' bike also happens to mine," said Roeder of his poor start. "This morning, he was having clutch problems, and now I am." Roeder went on to easily win the first heat, which would also be the fastest of the evening. Stump faded to fifth, while Greg Sims, Kris Kiser and Bryan Villella finished second through fourth, in that order, and headed for the main. Ingram put his Honda into the lead at the start of the second heat race. Morehead started second, and seemed to be waiting for the right moment to strike. "The track was a little wet, and I was waiting for it to brush off," said Morehead. An inside move in turn three put Morehead into the lead for good. Ingram held on to second, ahead of Danny Koelsch and Ian Segedy. Pegram got off the line first in the third heat, but he only enjoyed the lead for a few laps, as Erichsen smoked past and into the lead. Pegram's troubles weren't over, as Price nipped him for second as they raced towards the checkered flag. Don Estep finished a distant fourth and earned the last transfer position into the main. One of the traditions that takes place at the Huron County event is the Roeder vs. RaIl runoff. The two Ohio legends - George Roeder Sr. and Ronnie RaIl - squared off once again before the start of the main events. This year, Roeder didn't want to play and disappeared from Rail The crowd was lucky to watch Rall ride, as he had ~aile~ off his Harley earlier on and was mpam. At the start of the Expert main, the younger George Roeder occupied the pole position, but his clutch problems were not yet over. Morehead grabbed the holeshot, while Roeder was stuck on the line. "I finally just jammed it into gear," said Roeder, who started dead last. Price stalked Morehead, but the veteran held on for the win aboard his Gary Stolzenburg-tuned, F&S H-D/KK Motorcycle Supply/Sheperd Chemical Co.lJohn Dragoo-sponsored HarleyDavidson. Price finished second, while Roeder blasted through the field to finish third. Jess Roeder had the 'start wired in the Junior main, and led for three laps. Pat Buchanan and James Hart tired EX: I. AMA Eastern Regional Championship Series: Round 7 Roeder blasts Greenville HM By Bert Shepard ,'T GREENVILLE, OH, JUNE 20 his is getting to be fun, I don't have to be as aggressive as I used to," said George Roeder II, after topping the field at the Treaty City M.G.-promoted Greenville Eastern Regional Half Mile. "Things are just clicking, especially with all the help we've been getting lately." Roeder, as did a large number of Experts, used. the Regional as an opportunity to tune up for the Lima National Half Mile. Trailing Roeder across the finish line were Georgie Price and Larry Pegram. The race was marred by the death of Junior class competitor Rodney Mashue, who lost his life in a crash during the Junior main event. James Hart bested the Junior final after a restart, and Mike Hacker won the Pro-Am main. . Four racers dipped into the 26second bracket in time trials, and Roeder set the pace with a 26.106 second lap. Darren Erichsen's 26.746 was close behind, as were Pegram's 26.834 and Dan Ingram's 26.835. Roeder, Erichsen and Pegram would sit on the poles in the three heat races. Steve Morehead led the first eightlap heat briefly before a.broken shock relegated him to an ~ighth-place finish. Roeder inherited the lead, but
