"1 barely saw it before 1 went straight over the handlebars anc:i bounced down the road. It was a pretty scary crash and I banged my (right) wrist pretty good, but nothing vital was broken on the bike. I just brushed myself off and got going again." As it turned out, Summers broke the wrist in the crash and later in the week had surgery to install a pin. When the white flag appeared after three completed laps, Summers was still holding a considerable lead on Russell, while Andrews rode 50 seconds adrift of the runner-up spot. But Russell crashed before the second river crossing and allowed Andrews a chance to get back into the hunt. "1 banged my throttle assembly on a rock the lap before and it gave me trouble the last lap and a half," said the Scott/Wiseco/Fox/Arai/ Dunlop/Rocky -backed Russell. "Joel caught me just before the Moon Rocks and then we went back and forth a few times before I got away." "1 got stuck going across the Moon Rocks and that was it," said Andrews of his bid to beat Russell. "1 did my best to catch him after that but he was just too far ahead and there wasn't any time left." Russell beat Andrews to the finish line with one minute and five seconds to spare but was more than seven minutes off of Summers' winning pace. Blackwell rode under the checkered flag four minutes behind Andrews for his second-straight fourth overall finish at Blackwater. Hrehor was a further two minutes tardy and Roeseler was a total of 20 minutes behind the overall winner after more than three hours of racing. "1 guess everything went my way out there," said Summers afterwards. "That little bit of rain we had early this morning worked to my advantage in that the course became kind of slick, which is perfect for my heavy bike. Now that this is over, I'm thinking that my wrist really hurts!" "This is the best I've ever done here so I'm pretty happy," explained Russell after the race. "In fact, this is the first time I ever made it through this race without watering out! I guess that's a victory in itself." "I've worked real hard to get here and I'm real proud to be up here," said Andrews from his third-place position on the podium. Along with his younger brother, Fred, Joel was once one of Ohio's fastest motocrossers and recently a mechanic for the Team Peak/Honda 125cc motocross team. Since joining the series at the fourth round Andrews has finished an impressive third overall three times. "1 was a little surprised' today that I never got stuck out there or anything. I just took my time until I got used to the conditions. As for the beginning I'll admit that I had no idea where togo." Cornett remained the fastest nonPro-class rider in the run until the last lap, when 25-year~ld Team Husqvarna rider Fred Hoess passed him on a 350cc four-stroke. Hoess was in the process of pulling away from early class leader and four-time Blackwater 100 winner Mark Hyde, and would eventually finish seventh overall. Hoess bettered Hyde by 14 minutes and four overall positions. Jared Green finished third in the class aboard a Honda XR600. Cornett placed eighth overall and won the 17-rider 250cc A class by a considerable margin. Craig Jones finished second, while Illinois' Kelly Getz was third in the class and 20th overall. Fredette's 200cc A class victory was his first of the '92 series. The 34-year-old veteran Kawasaki KDX200 rider bettereda trio of Kawasaki KX125s on his way to ninth overall. Series rivals Jeff Lauth, Robert Tominello and Chad Froman finished lIth, 13th and 14th overall, respectively. Tom Harris was the Open A class winner for the second series event in a row and placed 10th overall aboard a Yamaha YZ490. The 31-year~ld Harris was joined in the top 20 overall by two more Open A pilots, John Vincent (18th) and Matthew Spigelmyer (19th.) The Vet A competition looked to be'a three-man race before disaster struck two of the front-runners at the same river crossing. Tim Shephard dropped his bike in the first crossing while paddling alongside of Rick Kresic. At the same time, Mike Holbert banged his rear sprocket on a rock and disabled his Yamaha for the better part of 10 minutes, approximately the same amount of time that Shephard spent pumping out his drowned machine. Kresic won the 18rider class as the only rider in the division to complete all four laps. Shephard recovered for a distant second, while Georgia's Daryl Kuenzer placed third. Another fast Georgian, Terry Mealer won the Senior (+40) class. Former AMA National Enduro Champion (1971) Ron Bahn placed second in his first competitive race in several years. Denis Laliberte finished third. In the lO-rider Super Senior (+50) class Harry Greenlee continued to extend his GNCC series lead with another victory, this time ahead of Rich Karr and Robert Caplinger. The Masters (+55) class was won by Donald Harless with Earnest Huffman placing second. Joe Lojak won the Senior (+45) class to mark the 11th time that he has placed in the top three of his class at the Blackwater 100, an unofficial event record. John Gallagher was second in the l4-rider class while Ohio's Phil Andrews placed third in the group. c:N Results OVERALL: 1. Scott Summers (Hon); 2. Jeff Russell (KTM); 3. Joel Andrews (Hon); 4.
