e.LOCAL EVENTS first lap. Brown and Balkin again passed Sack at the next jump, only to be passed again in the following corners. This wild battle for second continued for several laps. Finally, Brown was able to shake off the "Sack attack", pull away from Balkin, and set his sights on Blackwell. As the race progressed, the top four riders distanced themselves from the pack, and Brown began chipping away at Blackwell's lead. On lap five, Sack dove under Balkin in the chicane to retake third, while Brown used a similar tactic to pass Blackwell and take over the lead. The action was far from over, however, as a do~fight was soon raging between Sack, Balkm and Cooper. Sack used good defense and smart racing to hold on for third place. Brown had an easier time, cruising in for first overall, with Blackwell crossing the lihe next for second. ~ Results 125 NOV: I. Justin Brown (Yam); 2. Dylan Blackwell (Hon); 3. Strunk storms Daniel Boone MX By Gwenn Harris 36 LONDON, KY, JUNE 7 Racing fans were treated to a real show as rookie Brad Strunk stormed around the track at the new Qaniel Boone Motocross Park. Between 450 and 500 spectators cheered Strunk as he flew his Honda across the finish line. Strunk, who is sponsored by Honda of Troy, Multi Air and Gear Racewear, raced back-toback' in the 125 and 250cc classes, riding 11 laps in all and easily winning both events. Out of 103 entries at the fourth race of the season, the 125cc B class was the most exciting race of the day. In the first moto, Lance Baumert got the holeshot and was closely followed by Darren Turner. Bauqlert's lead was short-lived as Strunk passed Turner in the first lap and then came storming past Baumert in the air on the second lap. On the third lap, Turner went down for a moment but was able to keep his third position. The second moto was just as exciting as Strunk gained the holeshot and led the field for the entire race while a battle ensued behind him. Turner followed Strunk durin~ the first two laps but lost ground in the thud when he was passed by Baumert and Jeff Hardin. With wheels nearly touching as they fought for position, Turner returned to his place behind Baumert as they flew over the finish line. The overall win went to Baumert since Strunk was not scored due to his professional ·status. In the 250cc B class the first moto was a fast race between several riders with Mike Howard leading the pack on a Yamaha. As a hard wind slammed dirt into the faces of riders and fans alike, Howard maintained his lead in the second moto also, giving him the overall win in the class with second place going to Steve Kiesler from Danville, Kentucky. Bertagnoli wins Blackhawk Unlimited GP By Gordon Lunde ROCKTON', IL, JUNE 7 AI Bertagnoli of Schaumburg, Illinois, too)< a convincing victory in the Unlimited GP class in AMAlCCS Pro-Am competition at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. Blasting out in front at the green flag, Bertagnoli had his sights on the $250 firstplace money. The Downers Grove Honda/ Arai/Michelin/E&H Racing CBR600 was performing perfectly throughout the 1.9-mile course. Bertagnoli had an obvious horsepoweer advanta~e as he would pull away from William White on the two straightaways. White's only chance of staying with Bertagnoli was to out-brake him, but it was not enough. After following close for eight laps, White backed off and settled for second. Dr. Bob Meister trailed a distant third on his CBR900. Matt Winnacker came up from a bad starting position to finish fourth, and while closing on Meister, Winnacker set an unofficial track record on the newly-configured course at one minute and 15.32 seconds. Bertagnoli ran consistent 1:16.5s while leading, but his good. start made the race for him. Bertagnoli also won the Heavyweight Supersport and Middleweight Supersport categories on the same machine. Meister pulled off six victories and amateur rider Todd Harrington won every one of the seven events he entered aboard his American Flyers/Downers Grove Honda/National Cycle-sponsored machine. Harrington finished third overall in the combined Expert! Amateur Middleweight GP event. Results U/L GP EX: I. Alan Bertagnoli (Hon); 2. William White (Hon); 3. Robert Meister (Yam); 4. In moto one, Harold Sack timed the. gate perfectly, but was aced out in the first turn by Brown and Jared Balken. Brown grabbed some amazing air time at the ~ndstand' double, much to the delight of hiS cheering fans in the bleachers. Balken and Sack battled for second until Sack went for more air at the double than his older-model Yamaha could handle, bottoming out with a sickening thud. Balken sped away when Sack failed to negotiate the next turn and fell off the back side of the berm. Before the obviously shaken Sack could recover, Dylan Blackwell, Mark Cooper and Darrell Wahl blasted by. Meanwhile, Brown roosted around the track, stretching his lead. At the checkered flag, it was Brown in first, followed by Blackwell. In moto two, Blackwell grabbed the holeshot, followed by Balken, Brown and Sad. Sack made a great move to the inside line, taking over second briefly near the end of the Fox flies at Columbia Motocross By Sharon Jones COLUMBIA, MO, JUNE 7 Donnie Fox of Pittsburg, Kansas, came from behind to win both motos in the Over 25 class at MXP, in Columbia, Missouri. In moto one, Don Froehlich rode his 250cc Kawasaki into the lead. A few turns later, Wayne Brooks motored by while Jay Johnson battled for third with Donnie Fox. The two swapped positions, carrying their charge past Froehlich. Three laps later, both Johnson and Fox buzzed past Brooks. Fox eventually scored the win ahead of Johnson and Brooks. In moto two Brooks got the holeshot with Johnson on his tail. Brooks doubled a jump that Johnson tripled and the two riders went down in a heap in the next turn. Johnson twisted his ankle and dropped out of the race, while Brooks got going near the back of the pack. Froehlich inherited the lead with Kenny Thexton in second. Fox, aboard a 125cc was moving through the pack at an incredible pace. By lap five: he sliced into the lead for the win ahead of Froehlich, Thexton and Brooks. In the Over 30 Veteran class, it was Brad Jones on a 500cc Kawasaki taking the holeshot with Wayne Brooks in close pursuit. Steve Goff held down third with R.D. Peterson in fourth. Jay Johnson, riding a Yamaha, was passing riders every lap to challenge the leaders by midmoto. On the last lap Johnson moved' past Brooks for second and almost nipped Jones in the last turn be~ore the checkers. In moto two, Jones took the holeshot with Johnson in second and R.D. Peterson in third on the first lap. After crashing in the start of the first moto, Kelly Bowen was on the gas and moved into second past Peterson and Johnson. by lap three. Bowen quickly closed the gap on Jones and moved past for the lead with two laps to go for the win. Jones took the overall with a 1-2 finish. In the 250cc C class Thexton turned in some hot riding after crashing on the opening lap. Shad Ridenhour held a clear lead for several laps but dropped back while Thexton worked his way up to first on lap five. Ridenhour _held on for second and Doug Downs was third. In moto two, Thexton gated perfectly to lead the entire moto. Downs badgered Thexton for two laps before Thexton pulled away. Ridenhour suffered from a poor start and had to work his way up to third. eN Results 50: I. Tyler Hawkins (Yam); 2. Stephen' Carter (Yam); 3. Ryan Howe (Yam). 65: I. Jelfrey HeUrich (Kaw); 2.
