Petersen, the two having contrasting styles, Petersen diving deeper into the corners, Kirk carrying greater corner speed. ''I'd always run up on him, but I couldn't get around him," Kirk said. "He was good on the straights." "My bike was quicker than their's off the top. It accelerates really well. He was going through the turns a lot harder," Petersen said. "I started carrying more speed after following him, not as quick as them, but close." Their battle took the pair up on Filice, who was beginning to suffer a vibration, catching him with two laps to go. "The last couple of laps or so, I thought I could beat him," Kirk said, and he. did. On the final lap Petersen had a plan to slip into third, but he ran into a few problems almost as soon as the lap started. . "I thought I had both guys covered," Petersen said. "That lap I figured I had to get through the carousel hard," but he leaned it over so far that he was grounding the exhaust and pushing the front end. "That blew that plan. Then, out of the last turn I was going to give them a run, but in second and third (gears) my bike wouldn't pick up the shift," Petersen said, settling for a very close fourth. _ Fifth place was contested the entire time by Walker and Baldus, the pair never more than a few yards apart. Baldus was in front most of the time, as was Jon Cornwell who ran off the track early trying to outbrake· Baldus into the final turn, leaving the pair to fight it out. The advantage Baldus held was brakes. Using carbon-fiber fronts, he was able to get much deeper into the turns, forcing Walker to pick his spot if he wanted to pass him. Walker took the lead, but Baldus took it back on the backstraight. Then, Walker recalled, "I passed him in seven or eight. I rode berserk the last few corners, but it paid off. I couldn't let Donnie (Greene) beat me. Otherwise I'd have to ride the 250 back to Texas." The Dianetics-.sponsored Greene finished seventh in front of Moto Liberty/Nankai's Doug Carmichael. Tom Paris and William Himmelsbach filled out the top 10, respectively. £N Results 250cc QUALIFYING: 1. Chris D'Aluisio (2:21.859/101.509 mph); 2. Colin Edwards ill (2:22.419); 3.
