ROAD RACE Continued from page 17 and, like Roche, lost time getting out of the sand. "My visor was covered in oil and I could not see anything. It was very difficult to judge distance and I ran into the sand," Falappa said. On the 14th lap, Fogarty broke dear and looked to have secured second place, but four laps later he hooked a neutral in turn three and lost the front end. "The gearbox had been sticking and I was hitting it hard to make sure it went in," Fogarty said. "Then in a slow right I got neutral and that's like an ejector button on these things. I tipped it in and tried to save it, but it was too late." By now Phillis was by Pirovano and Mertens, but Polen was long gone and the Aussie had to be content with second - and the championship lead. : "I took too long getting by people," said Phillis. "And I was afraid of crashing but I'm happy enough with the points." Pirovano won the battle for third when Mertens' Ducati went off in the final few laps. Pirovano said: "I was catching Robbie (Phillis) near the end but the rear tire was sliding about quite a bit. I wanted the points so I decided to settle for third." Mertens' bike lost power in the last three laps and finally quit on the cooldown lap. A similar fate befell Roche, who had worked his way back up to fifth with a lap to go. Out of turn one the final time his motor refused to pick up out of the first-gear corner. "The engine is broken," he said trudging back to his pit after salvaging sixth. "I think a cylinder has gone." . Slight benefitted a place but was disappointed wi th his weekend results - even though they were the best of the Jarama rookies. "The motor is too slow and the handling is still not right," Slight said. "Even though we did all the changes between races, my lap times were exactly the same." CN Results QUAUFYING: I.
