~ M OSS Masters of Motocross . oroeR m In the Plus 30 Master class at Muddy Creek's Masters of Motocross event, Alan Andreau (149) won both motos after race-long battles with David Mack (502). The Plus 40 Novice class second moto saw eventual winner Robin Preston (99) grab holeshot honors over second-place Thorn Ghidiu (14). Andreau tops at Muddy Creek By Carla Nelson BLOUNTVILLE, TN, JUNE 21 Ian Andreau topped the Plus 30 Masters class at the United States Masters of Motocross Eastern Championships, held at Muddy Creek Raceway. The event showcased many of the top Plus 25 and Senior racers in the country. Classes were also run for Women and Vintage motorcycles. All class winners' names were put in a drawing for two Northwest Airlines tickets arranged by the Travel Service Group and Plus 35 B winner Perry Brandon of Bath, New York, was the lucky winner. ''I'm going to Disney World!" said an excited Brandon. Chris Swenson won a Bell helmet that was custom-painted by Jack Jarboe. All class winners were awarded jackets by ProSports USA, the event promoters. Florida's Alan Andreau led the way out of turn one in the first moto of the Plus 30 Master class. Kip Bigelow and Ron Jones were close behind him. First City Honda/Scott/Pro-Action/ Answer/ShoeilMotuIlYokahamabacked Andreau set a fast pace right away, opening up a slight lead on Bigelow. Dave Mack had worked his way past Jones and was dogging Bigelow, who finally left an opening by taking the middle of three ruts in a turn. Mack took the inside rut and A 22 pulled alongside of him. The two dragraced to the next turn with Mack coming out in front and setting his sights on Andreau, who had a fivesecond lead. Mack charged hard and on the final lap caught Andreau as they encountered lapped riders. Mack came alongside of Andreau many times in the turns but Andreau used the lappers to his advantage and kept the lead to the finish, winning by only a bike length·over Bigelow. Jones was fourth about four seconds back. Mack was out of the gate first in moto two, while Andreau started midpack, but within a half-lap he was in fourth behind Mack, Bigelow, and Jones. Andreau quickly advanced past Bigelow and Jones, and was right behind Mack on lap two. On the next lap Andreau caught Mack and tried everything to get around him. He was overjumping tabletops and berserking the turns, but Mack held steady until the last lap. They came up on lappers and Mack and Andreau went into a turn already crowded by three riders, with Andreau exiting with the lead. Mack stayed close, but crashed with half a lap remaining. "My toe caught the bank and twisted me and my bike right around," explained Mack. Andreau won comfortably over Bigelow and Jones, and commented, Stev~n Starnes topped the Plus 30 Intermediate division by winning both motos. "I was having so much fun on this track. That helped me ride well." Plus 30 Intermediate rider Steve Starnes easily won his first moto, leading out of the start and holding it to the finish. A consistent four seconds behind him was Joel Cordell from Georgia. Starnes had to work hard for the second moto win, as early on lap one he went down in a turn and remounted dead last. It took the whole moto but he was able to catch and pass the entire class. John Lundy earned a welldeserved second ahead of Cordell. Boyd Wolfe and Gary Barden were closely matched in the Plus 40 Masters class. Woody Strickland was the winner of moto one after battling with Wolle, but in moto two he crashed and injured his ribs, ending his chances for a win. Wolfe and Barden switched positions· many times during the' moto. They both knew the winner would get the overall win, as they had finished second and third in moto one. Wolfe scored the win by half a bike length over Barden. The Plus 35 Masters class was a close race for both motos, as Ron Jones, Bart Lucas and Jeffrey Hughes rode wheelto-wheel well ahead of the rest of the class. Jones, on his home track, used his experience to maintain the lead on Lucas and Hughes. All three finished each moto within a bike length of each other. Tommy Martin, the defending Plus 25 Amateur National champ, had an easy time in the Plus 25 Non Current .class. Riding a 1988 500cc Honda, he quickly passed early leader Martin Merz. Merz rode in second each moto with a comfortable lead on John Trissel. Kevin Foley won the extremely competitive Plus 25 Masters class.. Andreau holeshot and led all of moto one while Foley, Bigelow, l\4ack, and Greg Nelson gave chase. Martin fell in turn two and started the race last, but halfway through he was even with the top five riders. Bigelow, Mack, Nelson and Martin freight-trained for most of the race, with Mack getting by Bigelow near the end, and Martin getting around Nelson. Andreau and Foley led moto two aho, while Martin was near them but again fell on lap one. A repeat of the Bigelow/Mack/Nelson race took place and Mack and Nelson got by Bigelow this time. Martin caught Bigelow and was right on his rear fender through the last lap. Nelson, in fourth, had a good lead on Martin and Bi~elow, bu.t with a quarter of a lap left he slid out in a turn. He remounted barely in front of Bigelow and Martin and both riders charged by, dropping him to sixth. While all this action was going on, Foley got around Andreau, who retook the lead twice but could not hold it to the end. Foley scored the win, commenting enthusiastically, "Alan and I battle each other often and it is always this close. This track is a fun (;N place to race." Results 'PLUS 25-NOV: I.
